=> C.O.D.는 '대금 상환 배달' 이라는 말로서 미국에서는 Collect On Delivery의 약자이고 영국에서는 Cash On Delivery의 약자로 사용합니다. 이것은 우체국에서 손님이 물건을 부칠때 돈을 내지 않고 물건을 받을 때 돈을 지불하는 방식의 제도입니다. 예를 들어서 Please send this parcel C.O.D. (이 소포를 대금상환으로 보내 주십시요.) 라고 하면 소포를 받은 사람이 요금을 내게 되어 있습니다.

Great attention should be paid to the letterhead. It should, of course, carry the name of the firm, and other important items such as address, telephone number, and possible the department and name of the executive. Law firms customarily list all the partners and associates on the letterhead. In some cases, a slogan or a list of the main products is included. A common error is to show both a post office box number and a street number, which can be confusing to the person replying.

Also distressing is printing the address in microscopic type with pale, almost illegible ink.

편지 윗부분을 주의 깊게 봐야 한다. 물론 거기에는 회사의 이름과 주소, 전화 번호, 그리고 가능하다면 경영 간부의 부서와 이름이 나와 있다. 법률 회사는 관례적으로 모든 파트너들과 동료직원들의 이름을 윗부분에 명기한다. 어떤 경우에는 주요 제품의 광고 문구나 목록이 포함되기도 한다. 흔히 저지르기 쉬운 실수는 우체국 사서함 번호와 거리 번호를 모두 명시하는 것인데 이렇게 하면 답신하는 사람에게 혼동을 일으킨다. 흐릿하고 거의 읽기 힘든 잉크로 된 깨알 같은 글자로 주소를 인쇄하는 것도 받는 사람을 난처하게 한다.

영국의 작가 허버트 조지 웰스의 공상 과학 소설로 1898년에 간행되었다. 영국의 후기 빅토리아 시대에 선진화된 무기를 장착한 화성인이 지구를 침공한다는 줄거리로, 외계인이 지구를 침공하는 우주전쟁의 개념이 처음 사용된 작품으로 평가받는다.

작품은 19세기 말 주인공의 독백으로 시작된다. 그는 유일한 지성체는 인간이라고 믿는 인간의 오만함과 냉혹하고 무자비한 외계의 존재에 대해 이야기한다. 어느 날 그의 마을 근처에 둥근 통이 떨어진다. 둥근 통 안에는 거대한 눈과 촉수를 가진 화성인이 숨어 있었고, 화성인은 무자비하게 사람들을 공격한다. 그들은 화성에 종말이 닥치자 지구를 공격한 것이었다. 화성인은 초록색의 열선과 독가스로 사람들을 공격하고 런던까지 초토화하기에 이른다. 생존자들은 지구가 화성인에게 정복당했다고 절망한다. 그러나 갑자기 화성인들이 죽어가는데, 그들은 지구의 박테리아에 감염되어 죽게 된 것이었다. 생존자들은 인간보다 우월한 존재가 우주에 있다는 것을 깨닫고 언제 닥칠지 모르는 외계인의 침공에 대비하기로 한다.

작가는 작품 발간 당시에는 생소하게 들렸을 레이저 광선, 로봇 등과 같은 최첨단 무기가 미래에 등장할 것임을 예견하였고, 냉혹하고 잔인한 화성인이 진화한 인간의 모습이 될 수 도 있다고 경고한다. 또한 과학 문명의 발전에 대한 맹목적인 믿음과 영국과 같은 강대국이 약소국을 침략하는 제국주의적 식민주의도 비판하고 있다. 다양한 인물들의 심경변화와 행동을 통해 인간의 오만함과 무지함도 비판한다.

The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells, first serialised in 1897 by Pearson's Magazine in the UK and by Cosmopolitan magazine in the US. The novel's first appearance in hardcover was in 1898 from publisher William Heinemann of London. Written between 1895 and 1897, it is one of the earliest stories to detail a conflict between mankind and an extra-terrestrial race. The novel is the first-person narrative of both an unnamed protagonist in Surrey and of his younger brother in London as southern England is invaded by Martians. The novel is one of the most commented-on works in the science fiction canon.

The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time. The novel has been variously interpreted as a commentary on evolutionary theory, British imperialism, and generally Victorian superstitions, fears, and prejudices. Wells said that the plot arose from a discussion with his brother Frank about the catastrophic effect of the British on indigenous Tasmanians. What would happen, he wondered, if Martians did to Britain what the British had done to the Tasmanians? At the time of publication, it was classified as a scientific romance, like Wells's earlier novel The Time Machine.

The War of the Worlds has been both popular (having never been out of print) and influential, spawning half a dozen feature films, radio dramas, a record album, various comic book adaptations, a number of television series, and sequels or parallel stories by other authors. It was most memorably dramatised in a 1938 radio

programme directed by and starring Orson Welles that allegedly caused public panic among listeners who did not know the Martian invasion was fictional. The novel has even influenced the work of scientists, notably Robert H. Goddard, who, inspired by the book, helped develop both the liquid-fuelled rocket and multistage rocket, which resulted in the Apollo 11 Moon landing 71 years later.
