STORY10: KING AMONG MEN

And staying in Washington, not too far from Capitol Hill, between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington's Tidal Basin, history was made today.

Officials 1.broke ground for what will be 2.the first memorial on the National Mall honoring an African-American.  The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.  And ABC's John Donvan was there.

For all the words sung in his memory on the National Mall this morning, for all the words spoken by the famous.

Here there will be a memorial to Martin Luther King.

By the powerful.

We continue to trust in the power of those words.

By the glamorous.

A man and a social movement.

The single, most powerful moment came during remarks by Andrew Young.

And he looked at you.  He looked at me.  And he looked at all of us.

The former Atlanta mayor and UN ambassador, who suddenly couldn't 3.get through it.  That brief moment said everything about how much time has passed and how many struggles survived since these aging men and those with them were young and part of something great.

I have a dream that one day...

King, of course, is part of that rare group of Americans 4.whose spoken words are their own memorial.

“I have a dream...”

“For everybody of all races and colors to have a peaceful life.”

 “And that people should be judged not by the color of their skin...”

...not by the color of their skin, but 5.by the content of that character.

“I believe there still is hope for a better America.”

Each one of these kids, there are 50 of them, 6.wrote winning essays to be here this morning.

Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.  Wow.

We are learning together.  This was his dream.

And today, out of the 10 of us that spoke that day, I'm the only one still here.

But to those of King's generation, like Congressman John Lewis, creating 7.a permanent memorial to King has been its own long struggle, though now plans are ready, and two-thirds of the $100 million has 8.been raised for completion by 2008.  Groundbreaking, they called this today, appropriately, when you consider the life being honored.  John Donvan, ABC News, Washington.

STORY11: WILD PIGS IN TEXAS

Finally, from us in Texas tonight, big trouble across this very big state.  And of all things, it's wild pigs.  These are not cute.  Not Babe, not Wilber from “Charlotte's Web,” not Porky.  These are 1.dangerous hulking feral hogs, 2.a million strong and growing.  ABC's Mike von Fremd reports from Del Rio, Texas with what we're calling a “swine of the times.”

It is an invasion on Texas soil.

In my sweet potato growing last year, 3.I built an electric fence.  It has no effect whatsoever on them.

4.The battle lines are drawn.  Farmers on one side, feral hogs on the other, 1.5 million feral hogs with 5.ravenous appetites.

They'll eat anything that's got a calorie.

I often tell people to think of a feral hog as 6. a four-legged fire ant.  We are not going to eradicate them.

7. The Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto brought the hogs to America in 1539.  467 years later, feral hogs are 8. devouring crops, chicken, sheep, almost anything in sight.

There are only two types of landowners in the state of Texas.  Those that have feral hogs and those that are about to have feral hogs.

The feral hog 9. has no natural predator here in Texas and with the population exploding game wardens are begging hunters to go after the wild animals.

They are very destructive to the land so it's a - it's good to keep the population down.

Is it all right for him to hunt that spot?

Yeah.

Hundreds of thousands of sportsmen are flocking to Texas, 10. thrilled at the chance to bag the big one.

There's some mystique about them, you know?  He's called the poor man's grisly bear and there is a certain amount of danger hunting them.

Danger, as this episode of the hit TV show “Lost” demonstrates.

You make excellent bait.

You are not going to control the feral hog population by hunting.

The wild hog has just has the - better intelligence of any wild animal living.  They are just very brilliant animals.
