Non-smoking areas extended
No-smoking areas will be extended to small offices, factories and local government buildings on Tuesday (July 25) in a move to minimize the risk of secondhand smoke.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said on Monday that the revised national health promotion law, effective Tuesday, requires the owners of small offices and factories with a space of 1,000 square meters or more and any local government buildings to set up smoking and no-smoking areas.
The current rule stipulates that office buildings of 3,000 square meters or more should designate smoking and no-smoking areas, while schools, hospitals and nurseries ought to be declared non-smoking.
Under the changed law, building owners are required to strictly designate non-smoking and smoking areas to prevent cigarette smoke from going over to nonsmoking zones.
Violators will face a maximum 3 million won ($2,334) in fines.
