This is an universal firmware patcher for protected Garmin devices.
Many devices recently have a strong firmware protection and cannot use unlocked maps
because firmware requires .gma and has MSV ( Map Signature Verification).
In this list you will be able to check if your device firmware requires this patcher or
if it just needs gingunlock+mapsigpatch or simply an .unl file or old gimgunlock.
Important note by MOD: Please check in attached list, in spoilers below,
if you need to flash patched .rgn in preboot mode or if you simply
can flash patched.gcd normal way because the original firmware does not contain
a GSV check yet (GSV: ---) Spoiler: list Show
Procedure to use the patcher and to load the patched firmware in preboot mode:
1) Remove any gupdate.gcd in your device.
2) Set it to Mass Storage.
How to set newer models (MTP devices) to behave like USB disks (MASSSTORAGE)
Probably you have noticed a yellow PC icon,
instead of the usual white one, on your nüvi screen when attached USB to your PC:
this happens coz Nüvi is in MTP mode. .System folder is not available too.
So, how to set it to Storage mode?
1. To make all of Nüvi files visible you must unhide protected files via Win7 like any other HD.
2. Start NÜVI and go to Volume Screen.
3. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
4. The Diagnostic Page will pop up
5. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
6. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
7. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable
8. Start NUVI and it should recognize it is hooked up to the computer.
9. Explorer will now see all files in ROOT directory and the .System directory.
AUTO DETECT mode can cause Error 0x8002000a with dashboard and lifetimeupdater, if you get it change to MASSSTORAGE mode

note: to be repeated everytime you clear Non Vol in your Nuvi.
Nuvis 30/40/50 and 42/44/52/54 too, are not MTP devices
3) Download the patcher (new version 1.10 updated on 25-12-15):
Changelog: fixes to have a more universal and flexible tool.
4) Copy the patcher in a directory along your firmware gupdate.gcd
How to get a Garmin device firmware update without Webupdater?
Go to file update link page -- eg. newer firmware update:
When you know the update file name , you can change version number and download also older versions, they are available on Garmin site.
Note: be sure to get your device HWID firmware, check it in garmindevice.xml
( Garmin Devices, their related HWID numbers and Software update Pages links Table )
or here: How to find your Garmin Device's HWID.
5) Drop the gupdate.gcd in its window.
The patcher will provide the patched gupdate.gcd in your chosen directory.
6) Download RGNTool from here: RGN_Tool - Utility to create/convert RGN/GCD
RGN_Tool - This program is an utility to manipulate Garmin RGN/GCD firmware files.
It allows you to:
•Convert GCD firmware files to RGN format;
•Extract and save the individual firmware sections of RGN/GCD files to .bin files;
•Overwrite HWID and SW Version of RGN/GCD;
•Build an RGN file using different .bin files.
For now, it is not possible to save to GCD files.
How-To
Well, it should be obvious. If not, do not use it.

9) Clear Non Vol.Clear Nonvol
You are done, your device is unprotected,
now you can use every kind of unlocked maps (NTU too).
NOTE: to flash a firmware update in the future, just patch the new gupdate.gcd
and flash it normally with Webupdater (drag&drop the file in Webupdater shortcut on desktop) or copy gupdate.gcd in the sd or in .System.
Remember to remove any previous gupdate.gcd in your device, before flashing any updates.
Clear the non-volatile memory:
Speedometer -> Developer Info -> Non-volatile -> Clear non-volatile.
Clear non-volatile memory probably is more complete than Master reset
Garmin's Nuvi's do not have a hard drive. Everything is stored in memory.
NVM or non-volatile memory,it is Nuvi memory that can retain some stored information even when not powered. Some files, like theOperating System files, are stored in non-volatile memory and others like POI files are stored in volatile memory that is kept alive by the battery.
Removing the battery will completely erase everything in volatile memory-
Clearing Non Vol erases all the files added from your usage since you powered it the first time.
Clear Nonvol for navigators nuvi 1xxx and 30 40 50:
1.In map screen, go to the speedometer screen:
2.Press and hold for 10-15 seconds on the speedometer image:
3.Click menu Developer info:
4. Select nonvol available:
5. Click Clear Nonvol
Following this procedure will have to perform the initial configuration of the navigator.
Clear Nonvol for navigators nuvi 2xxx and 3xxx:

Select nonvol statistics:
In the upper left corner, click "menu":
