9. Wind over Heaven : Small Restraint.
▣ Nine in the Second Place : Drawn back to return. Good fortune.
[Explanation]
[Nine in the Sxcond Place] finds the lost ox and leads it back,
which brings good fortune.
[Commentary]
Although [Nine in the Sxcond Place] does not directly correspond with the nurturing 4th line,
it occupies a central position that does not lose its balance.
If it guides [Initial Nine], which is receiving the benefit of Small Restraint(Hsiao Ch'u),
toward Great Gestraint(Ta Ch'u) by leading it back [牽復,견복], it will bring good fortune.
The character '牽(견 - lead/pull)' resembles the depiction in the "Ten Ox- herding Pictures
(十牛圖,십우도)," where one leads the celestial ox back home.
The target being led back is the 'ox[牛우]' that left home.
Without understanding the contextual transformation(tongbyeon) here, it is difficult to interpret.
Since both Sun(巽,손 - Wind) and Li(离,리 - Fire) carry the energy of Kun(坤,곤 - Earth) it forms
the image of leading an ox back.
Historically, it is also seen as King Wen dissuading an overly hasty early military uprising
after his release from prison,
instead gradually gathering the alienated public support (represented by Initial Nine).
Because the hexagram changes from Small Restraint(小畜,소축) to the Family(風火佳人,풍화가인),
it symbolizes leading the strayed ox (the alirnated public mind) back home.
In human lifee, whoever emerged from their mother's womb will eventually,
after wandering the world and becoming weary and bare, lead their ox and return home.
The wounds, regrets, achievements, and mistakes of that time can be seen as the report card
of the person's life.
Coufucius annotated : "Being drawn back to return and kept in the center means
that from now on, one will not lose it on one's own.
Even though the ox (public support) was lost,
pulling the reins of the lost ox to bring it back means it was not lost by one's own fault.
One who can achieve "Restoration of Sainthood (復聖,복성)" refers to the person
who holds onto their Original Buddha-nature(本佛,본불) and does not let go.
As lines 1, 2, and 3 try to advance hastily toward line 4, line 2―which holds the
central position―is subject to a certain degree of restraint.
