주간묵상 26-10

<드라마 3부작>

이 순간, 깊은 밤에

새로운 별빛 하나 나타났다면

그 빛은 수십억 년 전에

초속 30만 km의 속도로 출발한 빛

무엇인가에 비하면 거북이걸음

아침마다 떠오르는 태양도

실은 이미 8분 20초 전의 태양,

간밤에 보고 즐긴 은하수는

수십억 년 전에 만드신 것

수십억 년 후를 위하여

무엇을 새롭게 만드셨을까?

우주와 지구를 견주면

지구는 현미경 속 먼지 하나에 불과.

그러나 우리가 아는 이 우주조차

또 다른 차원의 세계 앞에서는

한 점 티끌일지도 모른다.

우주의 크기는 우주 밖에서만 알 수 있다.

그러므로 우리는

결코 우주의 전부를 볼 수 없다.

보이는 세계가 전부라고 믿는

인간의 지식은 오만이 되고,

보이지 않는 세계를 인정하는

지식은 겸손이 된다.

하나님은 눈으로 볼 수 없으나

그분 없이는

보이는 세계도 존재할 수 없다.

믿음이란 보지 못한 것을

상상하는 능력이 아니라

존재의 근원을 인식하는 눈이다.

지구는 시속 약 1,670km로 자전하며

초속 약 30km로 태양을 공전한다.

태양계와 은하계 역시

측량할 수 없는 긴 세월 동안

단 한 번의 중단이나 오차도 없이

불변의 법칙으로 움직인다.

법칙이 존재한다는 사실은

법칙을 세운 분이 계심을 입증한다.

그분은 오늘도

나를 품에 않으시고

내 등을 다독거리시며

내 숨소리를 들으시며

내 귀에 속삭이신다.

생육하고 번성하고 다스리라

필요한 모든 것은

태초에 이미 준비해 놓았노라.

티끌만도 못한 나를

우주보다 귀하게 여기시고

달란트를 맡기시고

갑절로 남기게 하시며

청지기로 일하게 하시다가

상속자로 삼으시는 아버지

때로는 실패로, 억울함으로,

질병으로, 가난으로, 재난으로-.

더러는 날 때부터 소경으로,

성전미문의 걸인으로,

베데스다 못가에 허다한 환자로,

무덤 속에 잠자는 나사로로-.

드라마의 한 장면으로,

한 배역의 유명 배우로,

7막3부작의 드라마,

1막 1장 끝날 때마다

삼겹살파티를 열어주시는 아버지.

우주의 무대에 펼쳐진 드라마

배역에 진지했는가?

원고에 충실했는가?

제멋대로 애드리브하진 않았는가?

파티에 제외되진 않았는가?

<A Three-Part Drama>

At this moment, in the deep of night,

if a new starlight has just appeared,

that light began its journey billions of years ago,

traveling at 300,000km per second—

yet compared to something, even that is a turtle’s pace.

Even the sun that rises each morning

is already the sun of 8 minutes and 20 seconds ago.

The Milky Way we admired last night

was formed billions of years in the past.

For the billions of years yet to come,

what new things has He prepared?

Compared with the universe,

the earth is but a speck of dust under a microscope.

Yet even this universe we know

may itself be a mere particle

before another dimension of reality.

The size of the universe can only be known from outside it;

therefore we

can never see the whole of it.

Knowledge that believes the visible world is everything

becomes arrogance,

but knowledge that admits the unseen world

becomes humility.

God cannot be seen with the eyes,

yet without Him

the visible world could not exist.

Faith is not the ability

to imagine what cannot be seen,

but the eye that recognizes the source of existence.

The earth rotates at about 1,670 km per hour

and revolves around the sun at about 30 km per second.

The solar system and the galaxy as well

have moved for immeasurable ages

without a single pause or error,

according to unchanging laws.

The existence of law

testifies that there is One who established it.

Even today

He holds me in His arms,

gently pats my back,

listens to my breathing,

and whispers in my ear:

“Be fruitful, multiply, and rule.

Everything you need

I prepared from the beginning.”

Though I am less than dust,

He values me more than the universe,

entrusts me with talents,

lets me gain double,

sets me to work as a steward,

and makes me an heir—my Father.

At times through failure, injustice,

illness, poverty, and disaster—

sometimes as one blind from birth,

as the beggar at the Beautiful Gate,

as the many sick by the pool of Bethesda,

as Lazarus sleeping in the tomb—

a scene in the drama,

a role played by a featured actor,

a drama of seven acts and three parts,

and at the end of every act, scene one,

the Father opens a feast.

The drama on the stage of the universe—

Were you sincere in your role?

Were you faithful to the script?

Did you improvise as you pleased?

Were you left out of the feast?
