Down by the sea lived a lonesome oyster, 
Ev'ry day getting sadder and moister. 
He found his home life awf'lly wet, 
And longed to travel with the upper set. 
Poor little oyster. 
Fate was kind to that oyster we know, 
When one day the chef from the Park Casino 
Saw that oyster lying there, 
And said "I'll put you on my bill of fare." 
Lucky little oyster. 
See him on his silver platter, 
Watching the queens of fashion chatter. 
Hearing the wives of millionaires 
Discuss their marriages and their love affairs. 

Thrilled little oyster. 
See that bivalve social climber 
Feeding the rich Mrs. Hoggenheimer, 
Think of his joy as he gaily glides 
Down to the middle of her gilded insides. 
Proud little oyster. 
After lunch Mrs. H. complains, 
And says to her hostess, "I've got such pains. 
I came to town on my yacht today, 
But I think I'd better hurray back to Oyster Bay." 
Scared little oyster. 
Off they go thru the troubled tide, 
The yacht rolling madly from side to side. 
They're tossed about 'til that fine young oyster 
Finds that it's time he should quit his cloister

Up comes the oyster. 
Back once more where he started from, 
He murmured, "I haven't a single qualm, 
For I've had a taste of society, 
And society has had a taste of me."

하버드를 다니다가 갑자기 때려치고 예일대에 다닐수 있을 만큼 유복한 집안에 자유분방한 성격이었던 그는 
부인과 항상 세계여행을 다녔고 1000곡이 넘는 곡을 작곡했다.
미국 아이비 리그 출신의 댄디즘의 전형으로 불리울 만큼 옷을 잘 입었던 남자 이기도 합니다.

낙마 사고로 인한 복합 골절로 끝내 한쪽 다리를 잃은 불구가 됐고, 자존심 강한 그는 진지하게 자살을 결심하기도 했다.
아무튼 AIDS가 세상에 알려지기 훨씬 이전에 에이즈 증상으로 사망했다.
아내가 있음에도 불구하고 양성애자였기에...

아무튼 그 의 곡들은 Jazz 연주자 들이 반드시 연주했을 만큼 풍성한 여유로움이 느껴진다.

미국 뮤지컬 무대에 활력을 불어넣은 장본인이며 일생 동안 자신의 노래를 세련되게 다듬었다.
포터는 백만장자 투기업자의 손자였는데 이러한 부유한 환경이 도시적이고 세련된 음악양식을 태동시키는 데 영향을 미쳤다. 6세에 바이올린을, 8세에 피아노를 배우기 시작했다. 10세 때 길버트와 설리번의 양식으로 오페레타를 작곡했으며 1년 뒤에는 최초의 왈츠 곡을 발표하기까지 했다. 예일대학교 재학 당시 2곡의 미식 축구 응원가 〈Bulldog〉·〈Bingo Eli Yale〉을 작곡했으며 대학의 쇼를 위해 곡을 쓰기도 했다. 이후 하버드대학교 법학대학에서 공부했고(1914), 동 대학원에서 음악을 공부했다(1915~16). 뮤지컬 코미디 〈먼저 미국을 보라 See America First〉(1916)로 브로드웨이에 등장했다. 그뒤 북아프리카로 가서 프랑스의 사막 부대를 위문한 공로로 프랑스의 무공십자훈장을 받았다. 1917~18년 군복무를 마친 다음, 유럽에서 뚜렷한 직업이 없이 지냈으나 그중에서도 파리에서는 작곡가 뱅상 댕디로부터 음악 수업을 받았고 1931년에 결혼했다.
〈500만 명의 프랑스인 Fifty Million Frenchmen〉(1929)으로 일약 브로드웨이의 대표적인 작곡가가 되었으며, 〈Gay Divorcée〉(1932)·〈Anything Goes〉(1934)·〈Dubarry Was a Lady〉(1939)·〈Panama Hattie〉(1940)·〈Kiss Me, Kate〉(1948, 셰익스피어의 〈말괄량이 길들이기 The Taming of the Shrew〉를 대본으로 함)·〈캉캉 Can-Can〉(1953)·〈Silk Stockings〉(1955) 등의 대표작들을 발표했다. 동시에 그는 영화 음악에도 발을 들여놓아 〈I Get a Kick Out of You〉(1934)·〈Begin the Beguine〉·〈I've Got You Under My Skin〉(1936)·〈In the Still of the Night〉(1937)·〈I Concentrate on You〉(1940) 등의 주옥 같은 노래들을 남겼다. 그는 특히 카탈로그 노래에 뛰어났는데, 〈Let's Do it〉(1928)·〈You're the Top〉(1934)을 역작으로 남겼다. 섬세한 표현력을 지니고 있고 내적인 리듬을 완벽히 구사하는 그는 가장 기지가 넘치는 작사자 중의 한 사람으로 꼽힌다. 아이라 거슈윈, 로렌츠 하트와 더불어 그는 미국 무대에 W.S. 길버트의 전통을 수용했다. 그의 작품들은 대중가요 형식을 지니고 있으면서도 세련된 도시감각을 지닌 독특한 전형으로 남아 있다. 1937년 30회나 되는 수술 끝에 결국 다리를 절단해야 했던 교통사고를 당하지 않았더라면 틀림없이 더 많은 작품들을 남겼을 것이다.
포터의 생애는 전기영화 〈밤이나 낮이나 Night and Day〉(1946)의 주제가 되었으며, 노래 〈The Decline and Fall of the Entire World as Seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter Revisited〉를 토대로 한 레뷰(시사 풍자극)는 1965년 뉴욕 시 오프브로드웨이에서 막을 올려 장기공연되었다.





Fifty Million Frenchmen 
is a musical comedy with a book by Herbert Fields and music and lyrics by Cole Porter. 
It opened on Broadway in 1929 and was adapted for a film two years later. 
The title is a reference to the hit 1927 song "Fifty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong" 
by Willie Raskin, Billy Rose, and Fred Fisher, which compared free attitudes 
in 1920s Paris with censorship and prohibition in the United States. 
The musical's plot is consistent with the standard boy-meets-girl plots 
of musical comedies of the first half of the twentieth century.

바로 그 콜 포터의 또 다른 작품이군요?
이곡의 악보와 가사를 입수해서 꼼꼼히 살펴 봤는데요.
그니까 만 2틀간 이 잼난 '굴' 이야기에 시간 가는줄도 모르고
어찌나 재미 있던지 박장 대소하면서~~ㅎ
'5천만 프랑스인'을 허버트 필즈가 각색한 대본
돈많고 부유한 파리 사교계 여행자들에 대한 느슨한 구조의 얘기로
플레이 보이 피터 보브스는 자신이 노리는 룰루 캐롤을
러시아 공작으로 부터 떼어 내기 위해 여행 가이드로 변장하면서
일어나는 해프닝들이 코믹하게 펼쳐지는...
다양한 째즈 버전의 연주로도 감상을 했습니다.

위에 올려주신 클래식 발성의 연주는 코믹스러움이 없어서 처음엔 어떤 의미인줄 몰랐지만
코믹한 째즈풍의 연주에서 Mrs.H의 목을 타고 굴이 미끄러지듯이 넘어 가는 장면을
피아노 반주의 글리산도로 처리한 부분과 굴을 토하는 장면의 Up~!
얼마나 웃기던지...ㅎ
참~! 가사의

그리고 마무리 Wise littli oyster 에서
가사의 운을 맞추는 독특한 스타일이 인상적입니다.
이 뮤지칼의 1막의 2번째곡
포브스와 캐롤이 서로에 대한 호감을 고백하는 You Do Something to me 처럼요.
