Piano
Prescreening Round
- All applicants for the piano concentration (both undergraduate and graduate) who are not currently enrolled in a degree program at Mannes must submit a preliminary recording for invitation to an in-person audition, which is also required.
- This audio recording (CD or cassette) must be submitted by the stated application deadline.
- The recorded performance should be up to 45 minutes in duration and include works from at least two contrasting historical periods.
- The recorded repertoire need not, but can be, the same music that would be offered for the live audition, should the applicant be invited.
- CDs are preferred. Videotapes are not acceptable. This recording shall become the property of Mannes College of Music and as such will not be returned.
- The recording must be clearly labeled with the applicant's name, program to which s/he is applying, and a list of the recorded repertoire in the order that it appears on the recording.
- Letters of invitation to audition will be mailed no later than one month prior to the audition date.
Live Audition Round
Undergraduate (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma) Repertoire Requirements (from memory):
- A prelude and fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier or two contrasting movements from a keyboard suite by J. S. Bach
- A sonata of Mozart or Beethoven (excluding Op. 49 and Op. 79)
- A 19th-century composition (solo piece, not concerto)
- A 20th-century composition (solo piece, not concerto) or an additional 19th-century composition
Graduate (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma) Repertoire Requirements:
- Refer to the repertoire list for undergraduates for repertoire guidelines.
- Applicants must perform a program made up of complete works from the standard repertoire, representative of contrasting stylistic periods.
- Master of music applicants must perform at an advanced level. Professional studies applicants must perform at a highly advanced level.

All applicants for the violin concentration (both undergraduate and graduate) who are not currently enrolled in a degree program at Mannes must submit a preliminary recording for invitation to an in-person audition, which is also required.

- The recording must include the following repertoire (with accompaniment where appropriate):
- Exposition and cadenza from one movement of a concerto from the standard repertoire.
- One movement from an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita
- One Paganini caprice
- The recorded repertoire need not, but can be, the same music that would be offered for the live audition, should the applicant be invited.
- CDs are preferred. Videotapes are not acceptable. This recording shall become the property of Mannes College The New School for Music and as such will not be returned.
- The recording must be clearly labeled with the applicant's name, program to which s/he is applying, and a list of the recorded repertoire in the order that it appears on the recording.
- Letters of invitation to audition will be mailed no later than one month prior to the audition date.
Live Audition Round
Applicants must use an accompanist for all appropriate literature (applicants may bring their own accompanist, or Mannes will provide an accompanist; the applicant must bring sheet music for the accompanist).
Undergraduate (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma) Repertoire Requirements (from memory:
- Scales and arpeggios in three octaves, scales in thirds and octaves in all major and minor keys
- Etudes by Kreutzer, Rode, and Fiorillo or more difficult études chosen by the applicant
- Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita
- A fast and a slow movement from any standard concerto
- A short salon piece by Kreisler or Sarasate or a comparable short work by a 19th- or 20th-century composer
