Year 10 IGCSE Biology students embarked on a trip to Kedah

Last Friday, Year 10 IGCSE Biology students embarked on a trip to Kedah to visit abandoned shrimp ponds that have been transformed into a seaweed cultivation farm. The trip was organized in collaboration with the Penang Soroptimists, who supported the planning and had previously visited our school to engage with students and answer their questions.

This initiative provided an excellent Service Learning opportunity, enabling students to contextualize and apply their recent studies on human impacts on ecosystems, as outlined in the IGCSE Biology syllabus. At the site, students met Dr. Adibi Rahiman Bin Md Nor, a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaya and one of the project’s founders. He shared insights into aquaculture and explained how the project is revitalizing the abandoned ponds while offering sustainable livelihoods to local communities.

Students also had the opportunity to harvest seaweed from the ponds—a hands-on experience they thoroughly enjoyed! We look forward to working with the Soroptimists again in the near future and hope this marks the beginning of many meaningful collaborations.

이 이니셔티브는 IGCSE 생물학 강의 계획서에 명시된 대로 학생들이 생태계에 미치는 인간 영향에 대한 최근 연구를 맥락화하고 적용할 수 있는 훌륭한 서비스 학습 기회를 제공했습니다. 현장에서 학생들은 말라야 대학교의 수석 강사이자 프로젝트 창립자 중 한 명인 아디비 라히만 빈 Md Nor 박사를 만났습니다. 그는 양식업에 대한 인사이트를 공유하고 이 프로젝트가 지역 사회에 지속 가능한 생계를 제공하면서 버려진 연못을 어떻게 활성화하고 있는지 설명했습니다.
학생들은 연못에서 해초를 수확할 수 있는 기회도 가졌는데, 이는 학생들이 완전히 즐겼던 체험이었습니다! 가까운 시일 내에 소롭티미스트들과 다시 함께 일할 수 있기를 기대하며, 이번이 많은 의미 있는 협업의 시작이 되기를 바랍니다.
