주간묵상 26-20

<부흥강사>

독충, 지네에 물리면

통증과 부기, 발열은 물론

심하면 알레르기 반응까지 온다.

이곳은 철이 되면

지네가 외부에서 끝없이 들어온다.

흉측한 모습도 문제지만

독성이 보통이 아니다.

나는 실제로 물려 병원 치료도 받았고

알레르기로 고생도 했다.

어떤 날은 컴퓨터 자판을 두드리는

손등 위로 지네가 기어가고,

바짓가랑이 속에서 나오기도 하고,

또 어떤 날은 피부가 가려워

이불 속을 살펴보니 지네가 있었다.

거실 바닥에서 발견되기도 하고

소파 밑으로 사라져 버리기도 한다.

놓치면 다시 나올 것 같아

소파를 뒤집고 밑천까지 찢어

잡아야 했던 적도 있었다.

알아보니 습하고 어두운 곳에서

유충으로 있다가 부화되어

철이 되면 활동한다고 한다.

결국 문제는 보이지 않는 곳이었다.

주문한 살충제가 도착했지만

차일피일 미루고 있었다.

그런데 곧 손자들 가족들이 온다기에

더는 미룰 수 없었다.

그날 밤, 방과 거실에서 큰 지네

세 마리를 잡고 나서

근본적인 대책을 세우기 시작했다.

가구와 책장을 들어내고,

모든 살림을 벽에서 띄우고,

진공청소기로 빨아들이고

걸레질을 몇 번이고 반복했다.

밤새워 청소를 하는데

먼지가 마치 이불솜처럼 뭉쳐있었다.

순간, 마치 내 속을 들여다보는 듯-

겉은 멀쩡해 보여도 보이지 않는 틈 속에는

독한 것들이 숨어 있지 않는가?

가구를 들어낸 자리들을 보며 문득

주님의 말씀 “회칠한 무덤”이 들렸다.

지네를 잡는 줄 알았는데

주님은 내 안의 지네를 잡게 하셨다.

탐욕과 교만, 음란과 정욕,

미움과 질투와 악독,

사람을 더럽히는 것은

밖에서 들어오는 것이 아니라

마음속에서 올라오는 것임을

새삼 깨닫게 하셨다.

“사람의 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각

곧 음란과 도둑질과 살인과 간음과 탐욕과

악독과 속임과 음탕과 질투와 비방과 교만과

우매함이니 이 모든 악한 것이 다 속에서

나와서 사람을 더럽게 하느니라”(막 7:21-23)

약을 뿌린 다음날,

세 마리 지네가 방 중앙에 나와 죽어 있었다.

숨었던 독충이 빛 가운데 드러난 것이다.

말씀과 성령의 빛이 비추면

우리 안의 숨은 독성들도 드러날 것이다.

지네를 잡느라 밤을 새웠지만 주님은

내 영혼의 대청소를 하셨다.

말씀의 칼로 심령골수를 쪼개고

성령의 물과 불로

내 안의 불의한 것들을 씻어내시는-

지네를 통해 회개와 감사와 찬송과

기도와 다짐을 하는 일일철야부흥회였다.

〈The Revival Preacher〉

If bitten by a venomous centipede,

one may suffer pain, swelling, fever,

and in severe cases, even allergic reactions.

In this region, whenever the season comes,

centipedes endlessly crawl in from outside.

Their grotesque appearance is disturbing enough,

but their venom is no ordinary thing.

I myself was once bitten,

treated at the hospital,

and suffered greatly from allergies afterward.

On some days, a centipede would crawl

across the back of my hand

while I was typing on the keyboard.

At other times, one would appear

from inside my pant leg.

And one night, feeling an itch on my skin,

I searched through the blanket

only to discover a centipede hiding there.

Sometimes they appeared

on the living room floor,

only to disappear beneath the sofa.

Fearing it would emerge again,

I once flipped the entire sofa over

and even tore the underside apart

just to catch it.

I later learned that centipedes

hide as larvae in dark and damp places,

then hatch and become active

when the season arrives.

In the end, the real problem

was hidden where the eyes could not see.

The insecticide I had ordered finally arrived,

but I kept delaying the task.

Then I heard that my grandchildren’s family

would soon be visiting,

and I could postpone it no longer.

That very night, after catching

three large centipedes in the room and living room,

I began taking more fundamental measures.

I moved furniture and bookshelves,

pulled every belonging away from the walls,

vacuumed every corner,

and wiped the floors over and over again.

As I cleaned through the night,

dust clung together like stuffing from a blanket.

At that moment, it felt

as though I were looking deep inside myself.

Though the outside appears clean,

are there not poisonous things

hidden in unseen cracks within us?

As I looked at the spaces beneath the furniture,

the Lord’s words suddenly came to mind:

“whitewashed tombs.”

I thought I was catching centipedes,

but the Lord was making me confront

the centipedes within my own heart—

greed and pride, lust and sinful desire,

hatred, jealousy, and malice.

I was reminded once again

that what defiles a person

does not come from outside,

but rises from within the heart.

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

Mark 7:21–23

The next day after spraying the insecticide,

three centipedes lay dead

in the middle of the room.

The hidden venomous creatures

had been exposed to the light.

When the light of the Word

and the Holy Spirit shines upon us,

the hidden toxins within our souls

will also be revealed.

I stayed awake all night catching centipedes,

but the Lord was performing

a great cleansing of my soul.

With the sword of His Word

He pierced even to the division of soul and spirit,

and with the water and fire of the Holy Spirit He washed away

the unrighteous things within me.

Through those centipedes,

it became an all-night revival meeting

of repentance, gratitude, praise, prayer,

and renewed commitment before God.
