DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(OC): Talk about a strange bulletin. Word has gone out tonight that some stores are putting those big jugs of Tide detergent on a kind of lockdown. It all happened after a police press conference announcing that Tide is playing a big role in a national crime wave. So, what's going on? Here's ABC's senior justice department correspondent, Pierre Thomas.
PIERRE THOMAS (ABC NEWS)(VO): It's not unusual to see security alarms on high-priced items. But laundry detergent? In stores across the country, retailers are trying to stem a new tide of crime and are literally locking up the Tide. Don't believe me? You're watching surveillance of a man Minnesota police say is responsible for shoplifting $25,000 worth of Tide, which has become kind of a liquid gold.
MIKE SIEMIENAS (SUPERVALU): This is one of the top products that we do see stolen from our stores.
PIERRE THOMAS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Mike Siemienas is an executive at Supervalu, one of the largest grocery conglomerates in the country, with 11,000 stores.
MIKE SIEMIENAS (SUPERVALU): These are very brazen thieves who are looking at the cost of the item and what they can get for it. And these are retail crime syndicates, whether the economy is good or bad, it's individuals who are trying to make a quick buck.
PIERRE THOMAS (ABC NEWS)(OC): And police say that Tide, typically retailing at $10 to $20, is a hot commodity on the street, where it's sold on the cheap and sometimes even bartered for drugs.
LIEUTENANT BRAD PYLE (PRINCE GEORGE'S CO MARYLAND POLICE): Tide is a staple item. Everybody uses it, day in and day out. And it's the most popular brand, so, they can move it, get a lot of money for it.
PIERRE THOMAS (ABC NEWS)(VO): You can find it offered on internet shopping sites, at cut-rate prices. Stores like CVS are developing countermeasures like those alarms we showed you and some police departments are even setting up task forces.
NARRATOR (COMMERCIAL): If it's got to be clean, it's got to be Tide.
PIERRE THOMAS (ABC NEWS)(VO): Apparently, for the criminals, no other brand will do. Pierre Thomas, ABC News, Washington.
