"十六心相見道
Basic Meaning: path of seeing with aspects including sixteen states of mind
Senses:
This is a stage within the path of seeing 見道 that follows right after the path of seeing with the aspects including three states of mind 三心相見道. There are two types. The first is the Abhidharma scheme that includes the states of mind associated with cognition of dharma (thusness) 法智 and the cognition that apprehends all specific things 類智, categorized as the higher and lower eight truths 上下八諦.
The second arrangement divides not into higher and lower, but by the principle observed, and the observing cognition. These are carried out by the dharma cognition 法智 and cognition of specificities 類智. The first is the cognition of the instantaneous path 無間道智 where in the forbearance from the cognition of the dharma of suffering 苦法智忍, one takes the truth of suffering 苦諦 in the three realms as object and directly eliminates wholesome and unwholesome. The second is the cognition of the path of liberation 解脫道智, where in the cognition of the dharma of suffering 苦法智, having eliminated wholesome and unwholesome, one realizes thusness. In the third, the cognition of the instantaneous path 無間道, based on the forbearance from the cognition of the specificities of suffering 苦類智忍, one internally realizes the content of the prior two cognitions. In the fourth, the cognition of the path of liberation 解脫道智, using the cognition of the specificities of suffering 苦類智, one confirms the forbearance based on the cognition of the dharma of suffering 苦法智忍. As the above four treat the truth of suffering, this process is repeated with the other three truths of arising 集, cessation 滅, and the path 道, and thus the total number of mental states is sixteen. This process is only carried out by bodhisattvas 菩薩. 〔觀心覺夢鈔 T 2312.71.86c7〕
