<벼랑에서>

Weekly Meditation 26-33
〈At the Edge of the Cliff〉
“Enough now—
lay everything down!”
I hear a chorus of voices.
Though one may strive for a lifetime
and never gain even a humble hut,
if a single day’s labor
could bring an apartment in Gangnam,
who would refuse?
Yet because we cannot believe it,
have never seen it,
and have only heard about it,
we tilt our heads and wonder,
“Could it really be true?”
Where are we now,
and for what
are we struggling so desperately?
For some,
a single day drags on
like a thousand weary years;
for others,
an entire lifetime passes
as joyfully as a single day.
Is everything
delightful and joyful?
Or is every little thing
wearisome and bitter?
A flower-strewn path
with a debt collector,
or a thorny path
with the one you love—
which is the happier road?
“Faith is the substance
of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen.”
With our lips,
“Amen!”
With our lives,
“Well… perhaps.”
Did you merely fall
out of bed today
and manage to rise?
Or did you leap up,
beating your wings?
Tomorrow, at the cliff’s edge,
will you plunge into the abyss,
or soar freely
across the open sky?
Without learning today
to beat your wings—
If our prayers remain fixed upon
what we shall eat,
what we shall drink,
and what we shall wear,
are we not still clinging
to the edge of the cliff,
struggling desperately
not to fall?
“God counts
even the hairs of our heads.
He cares for the grass of the field
and the birds of the air—
how much more
will He care for us?”
We read it,
hear it,
acknowledge it,
and say that we believe—
and yet…
Again and again,
I listen to a recording
of insects singing in the grass,
sent to me by a friend.
The more I listen,
the more clearly I hear
the still, small voice of God.
He has brought me
to the edge of the cliff
countless times—
because He has given me
the wings of angels!
