45) April 4th (Wed) and 5th (Thu) San Sebastian - Basque hometown, pearl of the Cantabrian coast -

      We left Altamir Cave at 2:57 PM (5,549 km). We decided to spend the night in San Sebastian, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in northern Spain, and drove along the A8 highway. Along the way, we planned to stop by Bilbao, the industrial and cultural center of the Basque Country, and Gernika, a city steeped in tragedy during the Spanish Civil War. However, fatigue and aggravated nerves made us skip those two places and head quickly to our destination, San Sebastian.

The Basques, like the Kurds, are a people who have been dispossessed of their territory. They live in northern Spain and the Pyrenees, but occasionally engage in terrorism in pursuit of independence. They possess a distinct culture and language, and are a proud people. They are also said to possess great self-esteem. Many of their successes are said to be intelligent and internationally successful. Street signs were often in Basque, with Donostia being the Basque word for San Sebastian.

We ventured out into the night streets for dinner, taking great care. However, amidst the sight of young people chatting happily over drinks at the bar, there was no sign of a terrorist. Tired and with a low appetite, we sought out a Chinese restaurant. It was a clean and elegant Chinese restaurant. The food was also to our liking. The owner was a beautiful woman. She brought out kimchi, thinking we were Korean. We enjoyed it. Her husband loves kimchi, so she ordered it from a Korean grocery store in Madrid. She was a former flight attendant who lived in Hong Kong with her husband until China took over. She loved it when I taught her how to make kimchi in writing.

오후 2시 57분 알타미르 동굴을 떠났다(5,549Km), 오늘 밤은 스페인북부의 해변 중에서 가장 아름답다고 하는 San Sebastian에서 쉬기로 하고 A8고속도로로 차를 몰았다. 가는 도중 바스크 지방의 산업과 문화의 중심인 Bilbao와 스페인 내전시 비극의 도시 Gernika를 잠시 들리기로 하였다.
그러나 피로가 가중하여 신경이 좀 날카로와 져 두곳을 생략하고 오늘의 목적지인 San Sebastian에 빨리 가기로 하였다.
바스크 인들은 쿠르드 족같이 영토를 빼앗긴 민족이다. 스페인 북부와 피레네 산맥에 살고 있지만 독립을 위하여 가끔 테러를 한다. 독자적인 문화와 언아를 보유한 민족으로 자존심이 강한 민족이다. 그리고 자부심도 크다고 한다. 머리가 좋고 세계적으로 성공한 인물도 많다고 한다.거리에는 바스크 어로 표기된 것이 많았으며 Donostia는 San Sebastian의 바스크 말이다.
잔뜩 조심하며  저녁식사를 하러 밤거리에 나섰다. 그러나 젊은이들이 Bar에서 한잔 술을 마시며 즐겁게 얘기하는 모습에서 테러이스트의 모습은 어디에서도 느낄 수 없었다.
피곤도 하고 입맛도 떨어져 중국식당을 찾았다. 깨끗하고 품위있는 중국집이였다.
음식도 우리 입맛에 좋았다. 주인은 미인이였다. 그녀는 우리가 한국인인 줄 알고 김치를 내 놓았다. 우리는 맛있게 먹었다. 그녀 남편이 김치를 좋아해서 마드리드 한국 식품점에서 주문한 것이란다.
그녀는 비행기 스튜어데스 출신으로 남편과 홍콩에서 지내다 중국이 홍콩을 접수하자 이곳으로 이주하였다고 한다.
그녀에게 김치 만드는 방법을 글로 써서 가르켜주니 매우 좋아한다.

I sent an e-mail letter to the Chinese restaurant owner and her husband, but it was returned because the address was incorrect.
중국식당의 여주인과 남편과 함께, 이들에게 e-mail로 편지를 발송했으나 주소가 정확
하지 않아서 인지 return하였음.

From the square, we head to the Santa Maria Cathedral. The sculptures on the main entrance are beautiful.
광장에서 이어진 산타 마리아 성당으로 간다. 정문의 조각이 아름답다.

On the other side is Monte Igueldo, a zoo, and an amusement park, which can be reached by cable car.

We left San Sebastian (5,793 km) at 11:25 AM and headed to Provence, southern France. I look forward to experiencing the charm of southern France, a land of art, painting, and romance.


오전 11시 25분 산 세바치안을 떠나 (5,793Km), 프랑스 남부 프로방스 지방으로 떠났다. 
그림과 예술, 낭만이 있는 곳 남프랑스의 정취를 기대해 본다.
