제2단 約(약)......약속을 지킴......第66事

  The 2nd Section : Promise(約,약) ... Keeping promises... 66th Deed.

約(약)은 믿음이 훌륭한 매개가 되며 믿음의 엄격한 스승이 되며

믿음이 생겨나는 원천이 되며 믿음의 신령한 넋이다.

 A promise (約,약) serves as an excellent medium for trust, a strict teacher of trust,

 the very source from which trust springs, and the sacred soul of trust.

매개하는 것이 없으면 합하지 못하고 스승이 아니면 꾸짖지 못하고 원천이 되는 것이 없으면

흐르지 못하고 넋이 없으면 살아 있지 못한다.

 Without a medium, things cannot unite, without a teacher, there can be no rebuking,

  without a source, nothing can flow, and without a soul nothing can remain alive.

約者는 信之良媒요 (약자는 신지양매요)

  A promise is an excellent medium for trust,

信之嚴師 信之發源이요 (신지엄사 신지발원이요)

  A strict teacher of trust, and the source from which trust originates.

信之靈魄也라 非媒不合하며 (신지영백야라 비매불합하며)

  It is the sacred soul of trust. Without a medium, there is no uniting.

非師不責하며 非源不流하며 (비사불책하며 비원불류하며)

 Without a teacher, there is no rebuking[of errors], 

 without a source, there is no flowing,

非魄不生하느니라. (비백불생하느니라.)

 And without a soul, there is no life.

 [ Philosophical Commentary, 풀이]

약속은 믿음의 매개체이며 원천이며 스승이며 넋이다.

  A promise is the medium, the source, the teacher, and the very soul of trust.

따라서 모든 믿음은 약속의 이행 여부에서부터 출발하고 끝난다 할 수 있다.

 Therefore, it can be said that all trust begirs and ends with whether or not a promise is fulfilled.
