제28 받지도 않고 탐하지도 않는다
“수보리야, 만약 어떤 보살이 항하의 모래수와 같이 많은 세계에 가득 찬 칠보를 가지고 널리 보시했더라도 만약 다시 어떤 사람이 일체 법에 나 없는 진리를 알아 깨달음을 이루었다면 이 보살이 얻은 공덕은 앞의 보살이 얻은 공덕보다 뛰어나리라. 왜냐하면 수보리야, 모든 보살들은 복덕을 받지 않기 때문이니라.” 수보리가 부처님께 사뢰었다.
“세존이시여, 어찌하여 보살이 복덕을 받지 않사옵니까.” “수보리야, 보살은 자기가 지은 바 복덕을 탐착하지 않기 때문이니, 그러므로 복덕을 받지 않는다고 말하느니라.”
28. 탐착(貪着) 없는 복덕(福德)
“수보리여! 보살이 항하의 모래 수만큼 많은 세계에 칠보를 가득 채워 보시한다고 하자. 또 어떤 사람이 모든 법이 무아(無我)임을 알아 인욕(忍辱)을 성취한다고 하자. 그러면 이 보살의 공덕은 앞의 보살이 얻은 공덕보다 더 뛰어나다.” 수보리여! 모든 보살들은 복덕을 누리지 않기 때문이다.“
수보리가 부처님께 여쭈었습니다.
“세존이시여! 어찌하여 보살이 복덕을 누리지 않습니까?”
“수보리여! 보살은 지은 복덕에 탐욕을 내거나 집착하지 않아야 하기 때문에 복덕을 누리지 않는다고 설한 것이다.”
Chapter 28. Don't Expect, Don't Crave
제 28 · 불수불탐不受不貪 | 받지도 탐하지도 않는 복덕
"Subhuti, if a bodhisattva were to give away to others the seven precious treasures filling worlds which may be as numerous as the number of sand grains in the Ganges as an act of generosity, and another person knows that every dharma is selfless and has attained and fulfilled the wisdom of forbearance, the merits attained by this bodhisattva is much greater than that of the former bodhisattva." "Why is that, Subhuti? Because, all the bodhisattvas do not receive any happiness and virtue." Subhuti asked the Buddha, "World Honoured One, why do Bodhisattvas not receive any happiness and virtue?" "Subhuti, the happiness and virtue made by the Bodhisattvas are not responses to their craving attachments. That is why the Tathagata has said that Bodhisattvas do not receive happiness and virtue."
Chapter 28. 불수불탐분不受不貪 | 받지도 탐하지도 않는 복덕
The lord Buddha continued: "Subhuti, if someone gives treasures equal to the number of sands on the shores of the Ganges river, and if another, having realized the egolessness of all things, thereby understands selflessness, the latter would be more blessed than the one who practiced external charity. Why? Because great disciples do not see blessings and merit as a private possession, as something to be gained." Subhuti inquired of the lord Buddha, "What do you mean 'great disciples do not see blessings and merit as a private possession'?" The Buddha replied: "Because those blessings and merit have never been sought after by those great disciples, they do not see them as private possessions, but they see them as the common possession of all beings."

Attachment to Rewards of Merit
Subhuti, if one Bodhisattva bestows in charity sufficient of the seven treasures to fill as many worlds as there be sand-grains in the river Ganges, and another, realizing that all things are egoless, attains perfection through patient forbearance, the merit of the latter will far exceed that of the former. Why is this, Subhuti? It is because all Bodhisattvas are insentient as to the rewards of merit. Then Subhuti said to Buddha: What is this saying, World-honoured One, that Bodhisattvas are insentient as to rewards of merit? 〔And Buddha answered〕: Subhuti,Bodhisattvas who achieve merit should not be fettered with desire for rewards. Thus it is said that rewards of merit are not received.
Section 28: Not receiving, not desiring
“Subhūti, suppose a bodhisattva, in the practice of giving, filled as many world realms with the Seven Precious Jewels, as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River. If there is a person with the awareness that all dharmas are without self, and accomplishes their complete endurance, then this is superior, and the merits attained by this bodhisattva surpass those of the previous bodhisattva. Subhūti, the reason for this is that bodhisattvas do not receive merit.” Subhūti addressed the Buddha, saying, “Bhagavān, why do you say that bodhisattvas do not receive merit?” “Subhūti, for bodhisattvas to make merit, they should not greedily wish to acquire it, and therefore it is said that there is no merit received.
