<가짜와 진짜>

Weekly Meditation 26-34
〈The Counterfeit and the Genuine〉
A tonic brewed by a concubine
always tastes the same—
if it is too strong, she pours some out;
if too weak, she adds plain water.
But the tonic brewed by a faithful wife
varies from time to time.
So goes an old saying.
A golden hairpin
may be worth the price of a house,
but no one cares much
when a gold-colored plastic one is lost.
Draw a diamond ring across a pane of glass,
and the glass may split in two.
Yet a toy ring from a street vendor’s cart
may glitter just as brilliantly.
If a pastor finds the cross
heavy and burdensome,
he is a hired hand;
if he bears it with joy,
he is a disciple of the Lord.
If a believer feels resentful and wronged
when called to sacrifice,
the faith may be counterfeit;
if serving brings joy and gladness,
the faith is genuine.
A stepfather may overlook
a child’s wrongdoing,
but a true father
takes up the rod of correction.
If one sins
and yet continues to prosper,
one may be a child of the devil;
but if discipline comes,
it is evidence that one belongs to God.
“Jesus is genuine,
but the church is counterfeit.”
So testified a well-known person
in a YouTube video.
I agreed with much of what was said.
And yet,
that person also seemed counterfeit.
The color may be the same,
yet the substance may be different.
The outward form may be identical,
yet the quality may not be.
Prayer is not eloquent speech
adorned with impressive words.
It is honest confession,
true repentance,
and a transformed life.
After praying fervently,
I heard the Lord ask,
“With whom do you wish
to spend the rest of your life?”
“Yes, Lord.
I want to live with You
and walk in Your way.”
“Then sell your house tomorrow.”
“Why, Lord?”
“If you truly wish to go with Me,
should you not lay down what you possess,
share it with the poor,
and follow Me?”
“Lord, where are You going?”
“I am taking up the cross
and going to the hill of Golgotha.
Come—
let us die there together.”
My lips began to tremble,
and my prayer came to an end.
This is only an imagined story.
We pray,
“Lord, be with me always.
May everything be done
according to Your will.”
But deep within,
might we actually be praying,
“Lord,
please come with me
along the road I have chosen,
and let everything be done
according to my will”?
Am I genuine, or am I counterfeit?
The counterfeit becomes kindling
for the fires of hell.
