Weekly Meditation 26-35
〈What Will I Regret?〉
In the early hours
of April 15, 1912,
as the Titanic began to tilt
and its passengers were seized with fear,
Father Thomas Byles,
an English Catholic priest,
was reportedly offered a place
in a lifeboat—twice.
Yet he gave up
the chance to save himself.
He led passengers
from the lower decks
up to the open deck,
helped women and children
into the lifeboats,
comforted those trembling in fear,
and prayed with them.
To save others,
he surrendered
his own chance to live.
The ship sank
into the depths of the sea,
but his faith did not sink with it.
In the film *Schindler’s List*,
Oskar Schindler,
a German businessman,
bribes officials
and pours out his fortune
to save more than a thousand Jews
who were being led away to their deaths,
registering them as workers
in his factory.
When the war is over
and the moment comes for him to leave,
he points to his car
and says through his tears,
“If I had sold this car to Goeth,
I could have saved ten more people….”
Then, removing the gold pin
from his chest,
he breaks down again.
“This could have saved two people—
at least one more person….”
There are those who,
even after saving more than a thousand lives,
regret that they could not save
just one more.
Nothing is more precious
than life.
Yet if one lays down one’s own life
to save another,
then love is more precious
than life itself.
And if one lays down one’s life
to remain faithful,
then such faith is also
more precious than life itself.
On the day we stand
before the Lord,
what will we regret
that we could not let go?
Is our faith
truly more precious
than our lives?
When my wife passed away
four years ago,
my grief was almost unbearable.
Yet as I officiated
an acquaintance’s funeral
just the other day,
what did I truly feel?
There is a Korean proverb:
“Another person’s deadly illness
troubles me less
than my own hunger.”
It seems that proverb
was spoken about me.
All my life,
I have preached
the love of the cross.
But were my sermons
confessions flowing from my life,
or merely words from my lips,
repeated like a parrot?
What have I laid down
to save another person?
And what do I now regret?
