주간묵상 26-36

<난리와 난리>

기상이변으로

도로 하나를 두고

이쪽에는 홍수물난리

저쪽에는 가뭄물난리

비 한 방울도 없는

네팔의 대 홍수도-

엊그제 같은 어린 시절

앞산 밑에 실개천이

홍수로 범람하여

들판이 바다처럼 되기도,

가뭄으로 타들어가는

고구마 밭에 주전자로

웅덩이에서 물을 길어다가

한포기라도 살리려던 몸부림,

모두 물난리였다.

안방에 앉아서도

한 눈에 바라보는

국내외 각처의

지진, 화산, 폭염, 화재, 가뭄,

홍수, 전쟁 등의 재난현장.

엄청난 인명과 재산을

순식간에 쓸어버린

네팔의 홍수현장

이른 비와 늦은 비가

때를 따라 적당히 내리면

모든 생명을 살리고

성장과 풍요를 가져오는데

하늘조정실에서

프로그램이 에러가 났는가?

엉망진창이다.

하늘의 홍수조정실 시스템

고장 날 일이 없을 텐데

조정자의 심기가 불편했거나

조정실에 생쥐가 들어갔거나-

“혹 내가 하늘을 닫고

비를 내리지 아니하거나

혹 메뚜기들에게 토산을 먹게 하거나

혹 전염병이 내 백성 가운데에

유행하게 할 때에

내 이름으로 일컫는 내 백성이

그들의 악한 길에서 떠나

스스로 낮추고 기도하여 내 얼굴을 찾으면

내가 하늘에서 듣고 그들의 죄를 사하고

그들의 땅을 고칠지라”(대하 7:13-14)

성경에는 증상과 원인과 처방전이

명확하게 다 나와 있다.

아무리 좋은 처방전이 있어도

실행하지 아니하거나

제아무리 좋은 명약이라도

복용하지 않으면 효과가 없다.

구약의 왕들은

위기를 당할 때

옷을 찢고, 베옷을 입고,

재를 무릅쓰고,

자신과 백성의 죄를 회개하며

금식하며 기도했다.

2001년 911테러 직후

미국 역사상 가장 큰 비극 앞에서

전 현직 대통령들과

모든 정부요인들과

신앙지도자들이 한 교회에 모여서

눈물로 기도하는 모습이

세계적으로 생방송되었다.

오늘의 위기 앞에

우리의 골방은 없어지고

목이 곧은 백성이 되었구나!

〈Calamity upon Calamity〉

Because of extreme weather,

on one side of a road

there is a deluge of floodwater,

while on the other

there is the devastation of drought.

Even Nepal suffered

a catastrophic flood

without a single drop of rain

falling there—

My childhood

seems like only yesterday.

The little stream

beneath the hill near our village

would overflow,

turning the fields

into a vast sea.

At other times,

the sweet potato fields

would wither in the drought,

and we would struggle

to save even a single plant,

carrying water in a kettle

from a small muddy pool.

Whether from too much water

or too little,

both were

a water calamity.

Today, even while sitting

in the comfort of our homes,

we witness at a glance

disaster scenes

from across our nation

and around the world:

earthquakes, volcanic eruptions,

scorching heat, wildfires, droughts,

floods, and wars.

In Nepal,

a raging flood swept away

countless lives and possessions

in a matter of moments.

When the early and latter rains

fall gently in their proper seasons,

they sustain every living thing

and bring growth and abundance.

But has an error occurred

in the program

of heaven’s control room?

Everything seems

to be in utter chaos.

Surely the flood-control system

of heaven could never malfunction.

Perhaps the One at the controls

has been grieved,

or perhaps a mouse

has found its way

into the control room—

“When I shut up the heavens

so that there is no rain,

or command locusts

to devour the land,

or send a plague

among my people,

if my people,

who are called by my name,

will humble themselves and pray

and seek my face

and turn from their wicked ways,

then I will hear from heaven,

and I will forgive their sin

and will heal their land.”2 Chronicles 7:13–14

The Bible clearly reveals

the symptoms, the cause,

and the prescription.

Yet no matter how excellent

the prescription may be,

it is useless

if it is not followed.

No matter how powerful

the medicine may be,

it cannot heal

if it is never taken.

When the kings

of the Old Testament

faced a national crisis,

they tore their garments,

put on sackcloth,

sat in ashes,

repented of their own sins

and the sins of their people,

and fasted and prayed.

Immediately after

the terrorist attacks

of September 11, 2001,

in the face of one of the greatest tragedies

in American history,

current and former presidents,

government leaders,

and religious leaders

gathered in a church

and prayed with tears.

The scene was broadcast live

throughout the world.

Yet before the crises of today,

our prayer closets

have disappeared,

and we have become

a stiff-necked people!
