<외줄타기>

Weekly Meditation 26-40
〈Walking the Tightrope〉
At festival time,
the tightrope walker was a familiar sight-
daring feats high above the ground,
the performer’s jokes and banter,
and people from every walk of life
gathered in one place.
First, a line is drawn on level ground,
and one practices walking straight.
Then the rope is raised a handspan.
With a long balancing pole or a fan,
one learns to keep one’s balance.
Slip after slip,
fall after fall,
one practices again and again.
The rope is raised a little higher.
At last it stands some three meters above the ground.
A net or cushions are laid below,
and still the practice goes on.
Could anyone walk the rope
without passing through all this?
Balance,
a supple body,
skill in acrobatics and banter-
these, too, are part of the performer’s craft.
Walking blindfolded,
walking with a sack over one’s head,
sitting on a chair set upon the rope,
tumbling and turning somersaults-
each daring feat brings
both delight and suspense.
A tightrope walker is said to have crossed
above Niagara Falls
with another person on his back,
a feat recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
Yet there have also been those
who lost their footing and their lives.
In China, it is said,
a rope was stretched between mountain peaks,
and a walker crossed its 1,400-meter length
high above the ground,
setting a new record.
Now I see a tightrope
above the Jordan,
leading toward heaven.
Its height: 9,191 meters-
‘salvation, salvation!’
Its length: 6,403 meters-
‘let the flesh die, and the spirit live!’
It is the season of the barley harvest,
when the Jordan overflows its banks.
Yet I still cannot walk straight
along a line drawn on solid ground.
To worship in spirit and truth,
to rejoice even in suffering,
to pray without ceasing,
to give thanks in all circumstances,
to make my life a song of praise,
to love even my enemies,
to live with truth and honesty,
to forgive seventy times seven,
to do good without my left hand knowing,
to offer myself until nothing remains
but ashes upon the altar-
how much practice will it take?
I cannot cross the tightrope
above the Jordan with words alone.
Even if I proclaim my resolve
a hundred times over, it is not enough.
I must hold fast to the cross,
keep my eyes on the Lord alone,
and train through the struggle,
even when Satan’s fierce winds blow.
