☰ ☱ ☲ ☳ ☴ ☵ ☶ ☷

9. Wind over Heaven : Small Restraint.
▣ [Nine at the Top (上九,상구)] It has already rained, so one enters the house and stays inside.
Revering virtue, when he rides in a carriage, he will carry his wife along with him.
Even when handling and executing matters, there is potential danger.
The moon is nearly full(around the 14th day of the lunar month).
If a noble man(or military force) sets out on an expedition on this nearly-full-moon day,
it will bring misfortune(misery).
[Explanation]
[Nine at the Top] enters the house and stays inside aince it is already raining.
Revering virtue and prestige, he will ride in the carriage together with his wife.
Even when undertaking and handling tasks, there is an inherent element of danger.
Since the moon is nearly full(gimang, around the 14th day),
if a military force sets out on a subjugation campaign on this day, it will bring misfortune.
[Commentary]
Xiao Xu(小畜,소축 -Small Accumulation) represented a state of 'dense clouds without
rain(密雲不雨,밀운불우)'.
In other words, it is like a stubborn retired king who refuses to accept the small restraint/
accumulation of Six in the Fourth Place.
However, since the world is bound to change,
rain must inevitably fall at the final position of [上九,상구 - Nine at the Top].
Therefore, it moves toward the Hexagram Shui Tian Xu(水天需卦,수천수괘 - Waiting/ Hexagram 5).
Thus, it is already raining [旣雨,기우], and one is able to stay and rest in that place
to maintain the small accumulation [旣處,기처].
The place where they share the harmonious bond of cloud and rain(intimate union)
is precisely where one should reside.
This is purely because one has lived while revering virtue [
When such a person rides in a carriage, he takes his wife along with him [載婦,재부].
However, at the stage of [上九,상구 - Nine at the Top], carrying out responsible tasks
will not go smoothly, and danger may follow [貞厲,정여].
Therefore, rether than stubbornly asserting oneself like a full moon,
it is viewed as best to adopt a gentle and humble attitude like the moon on its 19th day
[月幾望,월기망] to step forward into harmony in the end.
Otherwise, if one claims to be experienced yet exhibits stubbornness without knowing harmony, failing to control elderly greed and showing ugliness by pressing forward
[君子征,군자정], it will inevitably bring misfortune [凶,흉].
THis expresses deep concern for one who cannot bring down rain even in old age.
Cheng Yi(Cheng Zi) defined '旣雨(기우 -Ji yu)' as harmony (和,화 - Hua) and '旣處(기처 - Ji Chu)'
as stopping '(止,지 - Zhi)', stating :
Fulfilling the way of Da Xu(大畜,대축 - Great Accumulation) leads to dispersion,
but fulfilling the way of Xiao Xu(小畜,소축 - Small Accumulation) turns into Da Xu(大畜,대축),
representing the revering of virtue
If an aging Yin(陰,음) leads Yang(陽,양) toward harmony in this manner,
how could such an achievement happen overnight?
It is because the gentle virtue of Six in the Fourth Place has accumulated like
the moon on its 14th day.
Zhi Xu(Monk Zhi Xu) also explained that at the final stage of Xiao Xu(小畜,소축 - Small Accumulation), after dense clouds persist for a long time,
the rain has already fallen to bring peace both far nad near―all because civil virtue(文德,문덕)
was beautifully revered and accumulated to the fullest.
Therefore, xecessive stubbornness from those in high positions brings danger upon themselves, and even a monarch is required to conduct themselves without overstepping
their bounds.
Since the principles of the world regard Yue Ji Wang(月幾望,월기망 - the moon before full)
as the condition of perfect harmony without flaws,
Is this not why using military force or wealth/ power brings misfortune?
For reference, Yue Yi Wang(月已望,월이망) refers to the full moon(15th day),
Yue Ji wang(月旣望,월기망) to the moon on the 16th day,
Yue Ji wang(月幾望,월기망) to the moon on the 14th day.
Asan interpreted Fu Zheng Li (婦貞厲,부정여) as meaning that if [上九,상구 - Nine at the Top]
covets Six in the Fourth Place, it remains perilous even if upright (Zheng).
Historically, he viewed this like King Wen facing hardships during the reign King Zhou
of Shang, regardless of how virtuously King Wen acted.
Furthermore, Yue Ji wang(月幾望,월기망) indicates that it is not yet the right moment
to launch a major undertaking; this is also seen as the reason King wen's virtue
had not yet reached its full moon.
Similarly, in Jun Zi Zheng(君子征,군자정), if Six in the Fourth Place covets [Nine at the Top]
and [Nine at the Top] covets Six in the Fourth Place, it will ultimately lead to misfortune.
Therfore, it is said to be a cautionary historical lesson warning that no matter how correctly
King Wen acted, directky would result in misfortune.
In conclusion, Confucius noted :
"'Ji Yu Ji Chu(旣雨旣處,기우기처)' means virtue has accumulated suffciently to bring rain,
while 'Jun Zi Zheng Xiong(君子征凶,군자정흉)' implies that a campaign on the 14th day
leaves matters of life and death uncertain
Lmage Commrntary : 'Already rained and stayed'
means virtue is accumulated and carried; 'the noble man sets out' implies doubt
and uncertainty]"
Even if virtue has been accumulated,
launching a military campaign is not what a noble man should undertake.
The Q&A Kang Seok- gyeong(姜碩卿,강석경) (喫眠窩,끽면와 - Kkimyeonwa)
helps aid understanding.
While considering various theories regarding Mi Yun Bu Yu(密雲不雨,밀운불우- 'dense
clouds without rain'), we introduce a response from Lee Deok-mu's(李德懋,이덕무)
Prose collection, written to his nephew Lee Gwang-Seok(李光錫,이광석) in reply
to a request to critique his writings.
"It is said that Emperor Yang of Sui once built a grand pavilion,
decorated it beyond imagination, and named the building Mi-ru(迷樓,미루 - The Pavilion
of Bewilderment).
Your writing is just like that.
It looks quite stylish, but one cannot understand its meaning.
Shall I tell youanother story?
Someone learned the calligraphic style of Wang Xizhi(왕희지) and become very skilled
at writing cursive script.
Having run out of food and skipped breakfast, he sent letter to a friend begging for rice.
However, because his friend could not read cursive script,
he was unable to get rice until evening.
No matter how magnificent Wang Xizhi's(왕희지) cursive script may be,
what good is it if it cannot be read?"
Afterward, Lee Deok-mu(이덕무) summarized and explained the key principles
of writing to Lee Gwang-seok(이광석) in four phrases :
"Let it be strict and solemn, yet not obstructed [嚴欲其不阻,엄욕기불조] ;
let it be refreshing and fluid, yet not overflowing [暢欲其不流,창욕기불류] ;
let it be concise, yet without exposing bare bones
and let it be detailed, yet without excessive flesh
Rather than having gloomy and uncomfortable weather because it doesn't rain,
it seems better to pour down a refreshing shower of rain.
