Ethanol in fuel, particularly petrol, has been trending on the internet for a few days. Availability of E20 (20 percent ethanol blended) petrol has risen to a great extent in fuel refilling stations across the country.

휘발유에 에탄올이 함유된 것이 며칠 전부터 인터넷에서 화제가 되고 있다. 전국 주유소에서 E20(20% 에탄올 혼합) 휘발유 공급이 크게 증가 하고 있다.

Already the upgradation of oil refineries for 20 percent ethanol blending has proved to be a costly exercise and now ethanol-blended petrol has started showing its effects on vehicles.

이미 정유소에서 20% 에탄올 혼합을 위한 설비로 업그레이드하는 데 비용이 많이 들었고, 이제 에탄올 혼합 휘발유가 차량에 미치는 영향이 나타나기 시작했다.

Amid concerns and debates that ethanol blending in petrol has significantly reduced fuel efficiency and accelerated wear and tear of vehicle parts, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas recently addressed the impact of 20% ethanol blending (E20) on vehicle performance, reports the New Indian Express.

휘발유에 에탄올을 혼합하면 연비가 크게 떨어지고 차량 부품의 마모가 가속화된다는 우려와 논쟁 속에서, 석유천연가스부는 최근 20% 에탄올 혼합(E20)이 차량 성능에 미치는 영향을 논의했다고 New Indian Express가 보도했다. 

The Ministry confirmed that ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, which can cause a slight decrease in mileage. Four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20 may experience a 1-2% drop in mileage, while other vehicles may see a reduction of 3-6%.

석유천연가스부는 에탄올이 휘발유보다 에너지 밀도가 낮아 연비가 떨어질 수 있다는 점을 확인했다. E10에 맞춰 설계되고 E20에 맞춰 보정된 사륜차는 연비가 1~2% 감소할 수 있으며, 다른 차량은 3~6% 감소할 수 있다라고 하였다.

While the government’s claim of up to 6% reduction in mileage on older vehicles suggests a very limited impact, consumers and some experts believe the impact on mileage to be a little higher.

인도 정부가 구형 차량의 연비를 최대 6%까지 감소시킨다고 주장하는 것은 영향이 매우 이래적이라고 하였지만, 소비자와 일부 전문가들은 연비에 미치는 영향이 조금 더 클 것으로 보고 있다.

This results in reduced fuel efficiency from any ethanol-blended petrol when compared to unadulterated petrol. While our internal estimate shows that E20 petrol gives 5-7% lower mileage than unadulterated petrol, primarily in vehicles manufactured before 2023, consumer feedback suggests the impact to be in double digits in real-world driving conditions,” said the head technical officer of a leading car company on the condition of anonymity.
