<마지막 야망>

〈My Final Ambition〉
Everyone has ambitions-
ambitions that change
with circumstances,
with the stories of our lives,
time and again.
As a little child,
I wanted to make my father happy,
so I dreamed of selling bungeoppang,
fish-shaped pastries.
The women in our village
would wish me well:
“Grow up to be president!”
I thought a president
must be a wealthy man.
In elementary school,
I wanted to help my father.
After school, I went
to the fields and mountains
to gather compost materials and firewood,
a gathering bag over my shoulder,
a wooden carrying frame upon my back.
Through middle and high school,
I worked by day and studied by night,
seeking a job to support my family.
Preparing for a national examination,
I turned the pages
until my fingers bled,
and used my palm as a notepad-
Before entering military service,
I joined a leading company.
With a job like that,
I envied no president.
Upon my discharge,
I returned to work at once.
I thought I might finally put
the long sorrow of poverty behind me-
Then my ambitions changed:
theological education, church planting,
world missions, welfare work, and more.
Yet the heart’s desires
and reality are worlds apart.
Searching for bread,
I climbed a cliff, slipped,
and caught a single tuft of grass.
Gazing down
into the dizzying depths,
I cried,
“Fathe-e-e-er!”
An answer echoed through the mountains:
“Let go-o-o-o!”
My hands and feet lost their strength,
and Father pulled out the tuft of grass.
Plummeting headlong,
I squeezed my eyes shut.
When at last I opened them,
my hands and feet had become wings,
and I was soaring through the sky.
I had made my nest
in a crevice of the cliff,
and was flying
beyond the horizon and back!
The indescribable grace of the Lord-
something that could never happen,
something beyond belief.
Tears of gratitude, tears of wonder,
became a waterfall down the cliff.
Praises of joy, songs of hope,
became echoes through the valley!
My final ambition:
to become an offering.
Now Father commands me
to leap from the cliff.
As I take a running start,
glancing over the edge,
He gives me a push-
for He is my loving Father.
Once again, I squeeze my eyes shut.
I am afraid to open them but-
