몸은 한 지체뿐 아니요 여럿이니 만일 발이 이르되 나는 손이 아니니 몸에 붙지 아니하였다 할찌라도 이로 인하여 몸에 붙지 아니한 것이 아니요 또 귀가 이르되 나는 눈이 아니니 몸에 붙지 아니하였다 할찌라도 이로 인하여 몸에 붙지 아니한 것이 아니니 만일 온 몸이 눈이면 듣는 곳은 어디며 온 몸이 듣는 곳이면 냄새 맡는 곳은 어디뇨 그러나 이제 하나님이 그 원하시는대로 지체를 각각 몸에 두셨으니 만일 다 한 지체 뿐이면 몸은 어디뇨 이제 지체는 많으나 몸은 하나라

한 몸에 많은 지체가 있는 것은 모든 지체가 반드시 필요하기 때문이다. 한 몸에 여러 지체가 서로 붙어 하나를 이루는 것처럼, 한 분 구원자이신 예수 그리스도께도 수많은 그리스도인이 붙어 한 몸을 이룬다. 사람마다 모습과 성격과 재능은 서로 다르지만, 모두가 그리스도 안에서 하나가 되어 교회를 이루는 것이다.

만일 한 몸에 발만 가득하다면 손이 하는 일을 할 수 없고, 음식을 먹을 수도 없다. 또한 손만 가득하다면 목적지를 향해 걸어갈 수도 없다. 눈이 있어야 볼 수 있고, 귀가 있어야 들을 수 있으며, 코가 있어야 냄새를 맡을 수 있다. 모든 지체는 저마다 꼭 필요한 역할을 감당하므로 어느 하나도 무시해서는 안 된다.

교회 안에서도 자기와 다른 역할을 맡은 성도를 무시해서는 안 된다. 많은 사람을 가르치고 큰 능력을 행하는 사람은 청소하며 봉사하는 사람을 업신여기지 말아야 한다. 부자는 가난한 사람을 무시하지 말아야 하고, 지식이 많은 사람은 지식이 적은 사람을 업신여기지 말아야 한다.

한 교회 안에는 다양한 사람들이 함께 모여 있다. 모든 직분과 재능은 하나님께서 각 사람에게 맡겨 주신 것이다. 그러므로 자신을 다른 사람과 비교하지 말라. 하나님께서 맡기신 사명에 충실한 사람이 주님을 기쁘시게 한다. 우월감과 열등감은 모두 사탄이 심어 주는 마음이다. 교만한 자는 멸망의 길로 가지만, 하나님께서 주신 재능과 직분과 사명에 충성하며 항상 다른 사람을 섬기는 사람은 주님의 기쁨이 된다.

고린도전서 12:21-25

눈이 손더러 내가 너를 쓸데 없다 하거나 또한 머리가 발더러 내가 너를 쓸데 없다 하거나 하지 못하리라 이뿐 아니라 몸의 더 약하게 보이는 지체가 도리어 요긴하고 우리가 몸의 덜 귀히 여기는 그것들을 더욱 귀한 것들로 입혀 주며 우리의 아름답지 못한 지체는 더욱 아름다운 것을 얻고 우리의 아름다운 지체는 요구할 것이 없으니 오직 하나님이 몸을 고르게 하여 부족한 지체에게 존귀를 더하사 몸 가운데서 분쟁이 없고 오직 여러 지체가 서로 같이하여 돌아보게 하셨으니

몸의 약한 부분이 오히려 더 중요한 역할을 할 때가 많다. 예를 들어 발은 땀이 나고 냄새가 나며, 발가락은 평소에는 신발 속에 가려져 있어 존재감이 거의 없다. 그러나 발가락 하나만 다쳐도 제대로 걷지 못한다. 그때 비로소 발가락의 소중함을 깨닫게 된다.

이처럼 모든 지체가 몸에 꼭 필요하듯이 모든 교인은 그리스도의 몸인 교회에 반드시 필요한 존재이다. 자기와 다르다고 배척하거나 무시하지 말고, 한 몸의 지체처럼 서로를 아끼고 섬겨야 한다. 나와 다른 사람들이 있기 때문에 내가 살아갈 수 있으며, 다양한 직업과 재능을 가진 사람들이 있기 때문에 사회와 나라가 정상적으로 운영되는 것이다.

하나님의 나라를 세우는 데에도 다양한 은사와 재능이 필요하다. 서로 다른 성격과 역할을 가진 교인들이 서로를 존중하고 섬길 때 그곳에 하나님의 나라가 이루어진다. 그러나 교회 안에 교만과 욕심과 미움이 가득하면 성령의 역사는 약해지고 분쟁과 사탄의 역사가 자리 잡게 된다. 그러므로 우리는 서로를 귀하게 여기며 사랑으로 섬기고, 하나님께서 맡기신 자리에서 충성해야 한다.

## 1 Corinthians 12:14-20

Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

Having many parts in one body means that every single part is essential. Just as various parts are joined together to form one body, countless Christians are attached to Jesus Christ, our one Savior, to form one body. Although each person differs in appearance, personality, and talent, all become one in Christ to form the Church.

If a body consisted only of feet, it could not do the work of hands, nor could it eat food. Likewise, if it consisted only of hands, it could not walk to its destination. The body needs eyes to see, ears to hear, and a nose to smell. Since every part serves a necessary purpose, no part should ever be disregarded.

Within the church as well, believers should not look down on others who fulfill different roles. Those who teach many people or perform great deeds must not despise those who serve by cleaning and doing quiet tasks. The rich must not ignore the poor, and the knowledgeable must not look down on those with less knowledge.

A single church gathers a diverse group of people. Every position and talent is entrusted to each individual by God. Therefore, do not compare yourself with others. The person who remains faithful to the mission given by God is the one who pleases the Lord. Feelings of superiority and inferiority are both thoughts planted by Satan. While the arrogant walk the path to destruction, those who remain faithful to the talents, positions, and missions given by God—always serving others—become a delight to the Lord.

## 1 Corinthians 12:21-25

The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

Often, the seemingly weaker parts of the body play a far more crucial role. For example, feet sweat and smell, and toes remain hidden inside shoes with little presence day to day. However, if even a single toe is injured, walking properly becomes impossible. Only then do we realize how precious that toe truly is.

In the same way that every part is essential to the body, every church member is indispensable to the church, which is the body of Christ. Rather than rejecting or ignoring those who are different from us, we must cherish and serve one another like parts of a single body. We are able to live because there are people different from us, and society and nations function properly because people possess diverse occupations and talents.

Building the Kingdom of God also requires a wide variety of spiritual gifts and talents. When church members with different personalities and roles respect and serve one another, the Kingdom of God is established in their midst. However, if a church is filled with pride, greed, and hatred, the work of the Holy Spirit weakens, leaving room for conflict and the works of Satan. Therefore, we must treasure one another, serve in love, and remain faithful in the places where God has called us.
