〈Renewing My Driver’s License〉
My driver’s license-
it feels as though
I renewed it only yesterday,
yet three years have already passed.
After this test
and that procedure,
I am told to bring two recent photos
and come to the police station in person-
a place I would rather not visit.
Twelve hours behind the wheel?
No trouble at all.
Several nights without sleep?
Still going strong.
Still a man of iron.
With my new license in hand,
I say,
“I’ll be back at least
thirteen more times!”
The clerk smiles.
A day like a thousand years,
a thousand years like a day-
with fresh resolve and plans,
I walk out with a spring in my step
and drive safely home.
Then, suddenly, a voice:
“You have renewed your driver’s license-
but what about
your citizenship in heaven?”
Before I am disqualified,
let me take a fitness test-
with a spiritual AI scanner
that no one can tamper with.
The sun rising in the east
once set my heart aflutter,
as though I were seeing
the face of my Lord.
Have I now turned
into a stone that only stares?
Eyes that once saw gold
as nothing more than stone-
have they become night-vision goggles,
darting here and there,
finding the grass always greener
on the other side?
Even the chirping of insects
once drew me into whispers
with my Lord.
Now, through thunder and lightning,
do I nod off-
snoring away?
Even the shadow of the cross
once burst the floodgates
of my tears.
Have those springs become
a lake bed laid bare
by seven years of drought?
A pilgrim’s journey
once led me toward
the hill of Golgotha.
Am I now chasing mirages,
driving the wrong way-
back to Egypt?
Once an eagle
soaring high above,
waiting upon the Lord-
have I become a mole,
digging through graves
in search of the dead?
Have I buried in the ground
the precious talents
entrusted to me,
crying, “Pour another! Drink another!”
unaware that dawn has come?
That Day is at the doorstep,
and the warning light is red.
Before daybreak,
I run with all my strength
toward the city of refuge,
leap upon the altar
of burnt offering-
to become ashes and smoke.
