Most Korean temples are located in the mountains. The last Chosun dynasty adopted Confucianism and an anti-Buddhism policy. Because of this, most Buddhist temples were moved to the mountains.
The temple is the cradle in which Buddhists follow Buddha's word, meditate and give Buddha's message to the world. It is the place which leads people to their paradise.
At the entrance of the temples there are streams and stone bridges. When people cross these bridges, they throw away their agony and cross into the peaceful world. There are also stone lanterns to lead people to the brighter world.

The gate of the temple is the entrance into Buddha's land. Most temples in Korea have three gates. They are called the Single Pillar Gate(일주문), the Four Heavenly King's Gate(사천왕문) and the Salvation Gate(해탈문, 불이문).
When you pass through the first gate, you must leave your worries behind you. There are four guardians at the second gate called heavenly kings, and if your heartis not ready to enter into the peaceful world, they will not let you through the second gate. The last gate is the final gate for salvation. If you pass the last gate, you are in Buddha's land.
<8. What does the sign 卍 mean in Buddhism?>
This sign 卍 is used in many Korean temples. It stands for happiness and fortune. It also represents the wheel of life, which is reincarnation. Where this wheel is rolling, there is peace and salvation.

卍 자는 원래 불보살의 가슴 손발 등에 나타나는 길상 만덕의 상징입니다.

태양의 상징, 흐르는 물의 상징, 둥글게 회전하는 모발의 상징이라고도 합니다.
하지만 많은 학자들은 고대 인도의 태양의 신이며 힌두교의 신인 비슈누와 밀접한 관계가 있다고 생각합니다. 즉 卍자는 비두슈신의 가슴에 자란 털의 모양을 나타낸 것으로 길상의 증표라는 것입니다. 이렇듯 卍자는 힌두교에서 유래했지만 불교의 상징처럼 된것은 부처의 백호 때문입니다. 불교는 오른쪽으로 도는 형상을 우선(右旋)이라 하여 길상으로 여겼다고 합니다.
나치표시인 하켄크로이츠는 卍자와는 방향이 다릅니다. 반대쪽으로 돌고 있는 형상이므로 왼쪽으로 도는 형상입니다. 그리고 卍자처럼 정사각 모양이 아니라 다이아몬드

<9. What is stupa(pagoda)?>
The pagoda(stupa) is considered the house of Buddha's body, because it holds a Buddha's sari.
Sari is parts of the body which do not burn in cremation. It is believed that sari is something that is created inside someone who has devoted themselves to Buddha.
When famous monks pass away, their funeral ceremonies are held in public, and their bodies are burnt to ashes. After cremation, Buddhists find colored beads called sari from these ashes.
When Buddha passed away, there were thousands of sari.
Buddha's sari can be found in the pagodas of world famous temples. Many buddhists bow to worship them.
There are many brick pagodas in China and wooden pagodas in Japan. But most of the pagodas in Korea are made of stone. This is because it is easy to find excellent granite in Korea. These pagodas are very beautiful. It is hard to believe that they are made of stone. 'The Pagoda of Many Treasures' and 'the Sakya Pagoda' are two famous Korean stone pagodas.

One of the best known Buddhist symbol is the lotus flower.
The life of the lotus is compared to human life. The lotus grows from the mud of the pond. The stalk of this flower grows under the water, and when it reaches the surface, it meets teh sunshine. Finally it blooms. Sunshine for the lotus flower is spiritual enlightenment for the human.
According to Buddhism, there is a lotus flower for everyone in Buddha's land. If his life is evil, his lotus flower will wither and die, and if his life is good, the flower will be beautiful forever.
<12. What is the Buddhist ceremony? 예불이란>
Buddhist monks have two ceremonies a day, one at 4 a.am. and the other at 6 p.m. When they start the ceremony, they use 4 instruments.
First, the monks beat a drum calling for the humans and animals on the earth. Second, they strike a big bell. It is for gathering the people who are suffering in hell. Third, the monks play the cloud gong for birds in the sky. Fourth, they play a wooden fish gong for living things under the water.
The Buddhist bows to pay respect to images of Buddha. Bowing them is an expression of thanks for their teachings. They bow their heads to the ground and place the palms of their hands down in front of them. Then, they slowly raise their arms up with the palms of their hands to the sky until they reach the level of their forehead.
