Soccerphile: Is playing in Busan World Cup Stadium with its 56,000 capacity a handicap?
S:부산 월드컵 경기장 수용인원이 5만 6천명이라는 것이 단점입니까?

Ian Porterfield: That's very true. In Suwon, Seoul and Chunnam, all compact stadiums, nice and tight, our performances have been wonderful.
P:내 그것은 아주 사실입니다...수원과 서울, 전남 등의 경기장은 아주 좋고 컴팩트합니다..
그곳에서 우리의 경기력은 훌륭했습니다...

I certainly agree that if we had a more compact stadium, it would be a big help, a better atmosphere. We had 23,000 people at our first game (this season) but the stadium looked less than half full.
전 우리가 좀더 컴팩트한 경기장을 가졌으면 큰 도움이 되고 경기장 분위기가 좋을 것이라고 생각합니다...이번 시즌 첫 경기에 관중은 23,000명이었지만 경기장은 반도 안 차 보였습니다...
The atmosphere is not there as the people are too far away because we have the running track. Hopefully, one day, I gather Mr.Chong is planning our own stadium.
트랙 때문에 관중들이 너무 멀어보이기 때문에 분위기가 살지를 않습니다...언젠가 정구단주가 전용구장을 구상하고 있기를 바랍니다...

I don't know when this will happen but I think that it would be a good thing, a good arena so that people can come to the game quite easily. There's good excitement for them to come as a family, a family day out, a family occasion and they're all Busan I'cons supporters.
저는 전용구장이 언제 생길지를 모르지만 그것을 좋은 경기장을 지어 사람들이 쉽게 경기를 보러왔으면 좋겠습니다..가족 단위로 가족 외출을 하러 경기를 보러오면 그들은 모두 부산 아이콘스 서포터가 되는 것입니다...


Soccerphile: It's interesting that with all this talk about football in the community that there was a lot of talk recently about Busan I'cons moving to Seoul. Was that serious?
S:부산 아이콘스가 연고지를 서울로 옮긴다는 흥미로운 이야기가 있었는데요? 그것은 진지한 얘기였습니까?

Ian Porterfield: When this story came out, it was quite amazing because we were preparing for the new season and we were in Hong Kong playing two games against the Kuwaiti National Team.
P:맨 처음 이 이야기가 나왔을 때 말이죠 저는 깜짝 놀랐습니다...우리는 홍콩에서 쿠웨이트 대표팀이랑 두차례 경기를 하는등 새로운 시즌을 준비하고 있었습니다...

My wife called me and was really worried, she said: 'We are moving to Seoul, it's all over TV.' In all honesty it was a good marketing exercise. I was very happy that the I'cons stayed in Busan.
제 아내가 저한테 전화를 했고 아주 걱정스러워 했습니다....아내는 이렇게 말했죠...“우리가 서울로 옮긴데...TV 여기저기에 이 얘기가 나와....”...솔직히 말해서 마케팅적으로는 좋은 실험일지 모르지만 저는 아이콘스가 부산에 남게되어 아주 행복합니다...

I think that this was a message to the people here. I recall that we wanted to use the stadium. Our clubhouse is only 18 months old, since I came here.
제 생각에 이것은 여기 사람(부산시겠지요...)에게 보내는 메시지 같은 것이라고 봅니다...저는 월드컵 경기장을 쓰려고 했던 기억이 납니다...우리의 클럽하우스는 18개월밖에 되지 않았습니다...

We only have two pitches that were in a little bit of a mess. We wanted to use the main stadium and the second pitch at the stadium. I think that there were some people on the Busan council who said: 'You can't use it.' I'm not certain, this was what I heard.
우리는 2개의 잘 정돈되지 않은 피치를 가지고 있었을 때입니다...우리는 주 경기장과 보조 경기장을 쓰려고 했습니다...제 생각에 부산시의 어떤 사람들은 당신들은 경기장을 쓸 수 없다...확실하지 않은데 이렇게 말한 것 같습니다....

In between times, the Korean Olympic team was training on the pitch regularly. We are the team in Busan and though we all want the team to do well and they've qualified for Athens and that's wonderful but this is our city and Busan I'cons is the city's team.
또 중간에는 한국 올림픽팀이 주 경기장을 계속 쓰고 있었을 때가 있었습니다..우리는 부산에 있는 팀입니다...우리 모두가 올림픽 팀이 잘되기를 바라고 그들이 올림픽에 진출하였고 그것은 멋진 일입니다...그렇지만 부산은 우리의 도시고 부산 아이콘스가 이 도시의 팀입니다...

Since that situation came about, maybe a few people have sat up and took notice and offered more help and support which is very much needed.
At the end of the day, it was never going to happen. That was my thought.
연고지 이전 얘기가 나오나 아마 몇몇 사람들이 앉아서 관심을 보이기 시작했고 우리가 정말 필요로 하는 지원과 도움을 제공하였습니다...그렇지만 저는 연고지 이전이 절대 일어나지 않을 것이라고 생각했습니다...

Soccerphile: What do you think about the K-League reverting back to the two-stage season?
S:K리그가 전후반기 제도로 회귀하는 것에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하십니까?(이 기자 정말 영국기자 맞습니까? 꽤 많이 알고 있네요....)

Ian Porterfield: That's been done because of the Olympic Games and the World Cup qualifiers. I think that maybe it's too little football and football fans would like to see a bit more football. I was surprised that they made it so short - 12 games (each stage). I thought that maybe they could have made it 36 games. In between they could have the cup competition.
P:이것은 올립픽게임과 월드컵 예선 때문에 그렇습니다...아마 리그 경기가 너무 적어서 팬들은 더 많은 경기를 보고 싶어할 겁니다...나는 연맹이 경기를 너무 적게 만들어서 놀랐습니다...
12경기씩 24경기 입니다...제 생각에 36경기를 할 수도 있었다고 생각합니다...중간에 컵 대회를 하면서요....
The World Cup and Olympic Qualifiers were very important to the country. I think that the publicity that Korea got from the World Cup was incredible so obviously they want to keep it going.
월드컵과 올림픽은 한국에서 아주 중요합니다...월드컵에서 대중의 관심을 엄청나게 받아서 그것을 유지하고 싶을 겁니다...

It's a disadvantage however; it's not the best way. Possibly for teams with small squads like Busan, Daejeon, Daegu and Bucheon it's useful because we don't have the resources of say Suwon, Pohang, Ulsan-teams with more money, Seoul FC. It's going to be better for us because we play fewer games.
그러나 그것은 불이익입니다...최선의 방법은 아니죠...작은 스쿼드를 가지고 있는 부산, 대전, 대구 부천 같은 팀에게는 좋을지도 모르지요....우리는 수원이나 포항 울산, FC서울 같은 돈과 자원을 가지고 있지 않습니다...우리는 적은 경기를 하니까 더 좋을지 모르겠네요...

Last season was very tough on my club, we were playing three games a week with a small squad of players and it was hard.
부산에게 지난 시즌은 정말 힘들었습니다...우리는 작은 스쿼드를 가지고 일주일에 3경기씩 했고 그건 정말 힘들었습니다....

Soccerphile: There have been some surprises this season, not least Champions Seongnam's poor form, why do you think they are doing so badly?
S:이번 시즌에는 뜻밖에 일이 좀 있었지요...특히 챔피언 성남이 잘 못하고 있는데요...그 이유는 무었이라고 생각하십니까?( 외국 기자가 이렇게 관심이 많다니 좀 고맙네요...ㅎㅎ)

Ian Porterfield: I think that they let four players move to Incheon, obviously there's been some change there. I think it's good for football that not one team continues to win the league. Because of fewer games this year, every game is a cup final.
P:제 생각에 4명의 선수를 인천으로 보내는 등 변화가 좀 있어서 그런 것 같네요...제 생각에 한 팀이 계속 우승하지 않는 것은 축구를 위해 좋은 것이라고 생각합니다...이번 시즌에는 경기 수가 적기 때문에 모든 경기가 결승전 같습니다....

You can win two games and you're in the top half and lose a couple and you're in the bottom half. The league this season is wide open for a lot of teams. Clubs like Seoul, Suwon, Incheon and Chonbuk - the money these clubs are spending you'd expect to be successful.
두 경기를 이기면 상위권에 있다가 또 두 경기를 지면 하위권으로 가게 됩니다...이번 시즌은 많은 팀에게 기회가 있다고 생각합니다...서울이나 수원 인천, 전북 같은 팀이 많은 돈을 쓰고 있기 때문에 그들이 잘 할 것 같습니다...

I would love to have the budget that these people have, it would make my job a lot easier. Our club is not in that position. I have no complaints; we are going in the right direction. We are laying a foundation and I hope that we keep improving in my time as coach here.
나도 그들처럼 쓸 돈이 많았으면 좋겠습니다...제 일이 훨씬 쉬워질텐데요....그러나 우리팀은 그렇지 못합니다...저는 아무것도 불평하지 않습니다....우리는 올바른 방향으로 가고 있으며 기초를 쌓고 있고 제가 여기있을 동안 계속 발전하기를 희망합니다...


Soccerphile: What would be a successful season for Busan? What would you be satisfied with?
S:어느 정도 해야 부산에게는 성공적인 시즌이라고 볼 수 있습니까? 어느정도면 만족하시겠습니까?

Ian Porterfield: When I came here, we probably had as poor a squad as anybody in the league. We won 13 games last season and finished 4th from bottom, the season before we finished 2nd bottom. We've progressed - the team is far, far better now in many areas but we've still improvements to make.
제가 처음 왔을때는 우리팀이 리그에서 거의 제일 처지는 스쿼드를 가지고 있었던 것 같습니다...우리는 지난 시즌에 13경기를 이기고 바닥에서 4번째의 성적을 냈습니다...그 이전 시즌에는 뒤에서 2번째였습니다...우리는 계속 발전하고 있습니다....

I would hope that we can continue playing well throughout the first phase of the season and maybe even improve the team a little for the second phase and do well in that. Hopefully, we can improve steadily, I don't think that you can snap a magic wand and go from the bottom, where we were, to the top in a short period of time.
나는 전반기 동안 좋은 경기를 하고 후반기에는 더 발전되기를 바랍니다...우리는 점차적으로 발전할 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다...나는 마술을 부려서 하위권에서 갑자기 우승으로 갈 수 있을 것이라고는 생각하지 않습니다...

Soccerphile: Are there any Korean players you have seen that you immediately thought that they would do well in England or Europe?
S:한국 선수중에 잉글랜드나 유럽에서 곧바로 성공할 수 있다고 생각하는 선수가 있습니까?

Ian Porterfield: There are a lot of good players here that can do well. I think the big disadvantage that they've got here is that they develop very late in their career. In Korea, education is everything, university studies, so players develop a lot later than in the UK and I think it's a big disadvantage.
한국선수들 중에 유럽가서 잘 할 수 있는 선수들은 많습니다...제 생각에 한국 축구가 가진 단점은 선수들이 아주 천천히 발전을 한다는 것입니다....한국에서는 교육이 전부입니다...그래서 선수들은 영국보다 훨씬 늦게 발전하고 그것은 아주 큰 단점입니다...

I've got a young goalkeeper, Kim Yong-dae, 23, I believe that if he could go to a good English club that he could do very well. He's got the potential to be an outstanding goalkeeper. It gives me great satisfaction to see how he's developed since I came here.
저는 23살의 김용대라는 골키퍼를 하나 데리고 있습니다...제 생각에 이 선수는 영국에 좋은 팀에 가서 아주 잘 할 수 있다고 생각합니다...그는 아주 훌륭한 골키퍼가 될 가능성을 가지고 있습니다...내가 여기에 온 이후에 그가 발전한 것을 보는 것은 큰 만족입니다...

He wasn't even the first choice keeper when I came here and now he's second choice to the lad up at Suwon (Lee Woon-jae) in the national team.
그는 제가 여기 왔을 때 주전 선수도 아니었습니다..그렇지만 이제 국가대표팀에서 이운재 다음가는 골키퍼 입니다....

There are a lot of good players here but the late development hinders them. It's quite hard for people to go to the English Premier League and the big leagues in Europe. That's why they take a hop, skip and a jump to Japan because they don't get the necessary opportunities.
여기에는 좋은 선수들이 많지만 발전속도가 늦기 때문에 그것이 방해를 합니다...선수들이 프레미어 리그나 유럽에 빅 리그에 가기가 쉽지가 않습니다...선수들은 필요한 기회가 주어지지 않기 때문에 일본으로 가버립니다...

When you go to the Premier League, you've got to get an apprenticeship, you need that little bit of experience. You've got players of 26, 27 who are babies as far as experience with other people.
(이 부분은 해석은 할 수 있는데 무슨말인지 모르겠습니다...)프레미어 리그에 가면 도제기간을 거쳐야 합니다...경험이 필요하지요...26,27살의 선수들이 경험면에서는 아주 부족한 선수들이 있습니다...

Soccerphile: But it's a big gamble to leave school at 16 to concentrate on football in Korea.
S:그렇지만 한국에서는 16살에 축구에 전념하려고 학교를 떠나는 것은 큰 도박이지요.....

Ian Porterfield: That's right but why? Sixty years ago, Korea was as underdeveloped as most African countries. Argue? It's true. Now, it's one of the most forward-looking economies in the world.
P:맞습니다....왜 그런지 아십니까? 60년 전에는 한국은 대부분의 아프리카 국가처럼 발전이 되지 않았습니다...못 믿겠죠? 정말입니다...지금은 세계에서 가장 미래지향적인 나라중에 하나입니다..

Education is very important but when you analyze the way football goes in this part of the world-it doesn't work.
교육이 아주 중요하고 축구가 여기서 어떻게 돌아가는 지를 분석한다면 16살에 학교를 포기하는 것은 가능하지 않습니다...

Kids are studying all hours of the day here - morning, noon and night. Other countries have education as well as it can be done. Football and education can go together. 학생들은 하루종일 아침 점심 저녁 공부를 합니다...다른 나라에서는 축구와 공부가 같이 갈 수 있지요...
The KFA should look at, a perfect example. Now France is developing more players than England, Spain etc. The national team won the World Cup and the Euro Championships with a population not much bigger than Korea.
대한 축구협회가 눈여겨 볼 완벽한 사례가 있습니다...프랑스는 잉글랜드나 스페인 보다 더 많은 선수를 길러내고 있습니다....프랑스는 월드컵과 유럽 선수권대회를 한국 보다 그다지 많지 않은 인구로 우승하였습니다...

It can be done and I tried to encourage this when I was involved in African football. In fact before I left Trinidad and Tobago, I wanted to lay a structure to develop football straight through and it would have worked.
이것은 이루어 질 수 있는 것이고 내가 아프리카에 있을 때 시도해봐던 것입니다...내가 트리디나드 토바고를 떠나기 전에 축구를 발전시키기 위한 구조를 만들려고 했고 그것은 성공적이었습니다...

Soccerphile: Would you be interested in the Korean National job?
S:한국 국가대표 감독직에 관심이 있으싶니까?

Ian Porterfield: I love my job at Busan, I want to make a go of this club. I loved being a National coach and had great satisfaction from taking Zambia to 18th in the world from sixty something. I took Trinidad and Tobago from sixty something to 24th/25th. I am very proud of my achievements. The future - who knows? What will be, will be. I am ambitious, my life is football, my love is football. I am committed to Busan I'cons but tomorrow's another day.

There may be a few more Korean tomorrows as there have been suggestions of a contract extension. For enthusiasm alone, the manager of Busan deserves some success and who knows? He could achieve his dream at managing in the World Cup with Korea.
계약 연장 얘기가 나오고 있기 때문에 그에게 한국에서 몇 년이 더 남았을 수도 있다...
그의 열정을 보면 이 부산 감독은 성공할 자격이 있다....누가 또 압니까? 그가 한국을 이끌고 월드컵에 나가는 꿈을 성취할지.....
