1. Olenin's Search for Real Life
Dmitri Olenin leaves Moscow society to find a more "real" and meaningful life in the Caucasus. Does he really escape his old habits and upbringing? By the end of the story, does he truly change, or does he just imagine a life he can’t fully live?
2. Nature vs. City Life
Tolstoy shows the difference between the "civilized" life of Russian nobles and the "natural" life of the Cossacks. How does he use descriptions of the land, animals, and daily Cossack life to show problems in Moscow society? Which life does the book seem to say is happier or better?
3. The "Good Savage" Idea
Characters like Uncle Eroshka and Lukashka live simple lives that follow natural rules. Do they show Tolstoy's idea of the "good savage," someone not spoiled by society? Or is their life more complicated? Compare the Cossacks’ rules with Olenin’s way of thinking.
4. Love Across Cultures
Look at Olenin and Maryanka’s relationship. Does Olenin really love her, or is he just imagining an ideal? What does Maryanka saying no tell us about the big differences between their worlds and cultures?
5. The Book’s Big Ideas
Even though The Cossacks is one of Tolstoy’s early books, it asks big questions about life. How does it show the conflict between wanting personal happiness (like Olenin at first) and living in harmony with nature and community?
By looking at Olenin, Uncle Eroshka, and Maryanka, what do you think Tolstoy is saying about which life is more valuable and real?
