"Potatoes"
Every morning at my breakfast table, I eat salad and bread. Inside the salad are chopped pieces of potatoes saturated in dressing. As I was munching on one of them, I was reminded of a book called "Potatoes" that I had read a good while ago. The name "Potatoes" had first given me a sense, as well as a scent, of rustics and nostalgia, and it seemed as if I were to read a good tale of country folks, but, expect unexpected?, it all went contrary to what I had anticipated. Although the protagonist, Pok-nyo, was poor but born in a noble family and still retained her slightly higher sensibility as a daughter of scholar class and her family canons still in force, one year she became fifteen she was sold to a widower in the area for 80 won. For her husband's extreme slothful nature, Pok-nyo and her husband lost the trust of their father-in-law and neighbours and had themselves thrown out of the house and ended up pushed out into the slum outside the Seven Star Gate. When she found out that other women loafed around in their work and still made more money-- Bok-nyo was paid 32 jon a day, Pok-nyo also became one of the labourers who get more wages without doing any work. In the autumn, the women in the shanty area of Seven Star Gate went out at night to steal potatoes in the field that belonged to a Chinese man in the area and one night Pok-nyo was caught red- handed by Mr. Wang and began to sell her virtue to him. Whenever Wang showed up at her house for a need, her husband even left the scene so that he wouldn't stand in the way of their trade, which later helped Pok-nyo and her husband become the healthiest in the neighbourhood. One day Wang brought home a young bride for an amount of a hundred won and on their wedding night, Pok-nyo went to their house and argued with Wang and got herself killed by a sickle. A few days after the incident and negotiations among Pok-nyo's husband, Wang and an herbal medicine practitioner, the cold body of pok-nyo was loaded off to a public graveyard. On the recent news, I have seen people selling their own flesh and blood for money; their daughters sold to Ticket Tea House, a virtual brothel in disguise of a common cafe and what's more, breaking his son's fingers for insurance money. Where is the world coming to? I believe that there is no difference at all between Pok-nyo's prostitution and the things that we're facing in the society these days; young girls caged in the labyrinth of Miari-a well-known red light district in Seoul, and sell their honesty for money. Do they lead a life of the likes of slavery? Money is something that we need to live and also a thing to have a certain degree of dignity in life, but I believe that it is a mere thing that "Easy come, easy go". The pathetic sights of settling Pok-nyo's death with the means of money rather showing a bit of emotion in the book is no less than what we're experiencing nowadays. I could not but feel pitiful at such scenes and attitude that "Money has better commerce that honesty" and "Money always works". How low and stupid they are!
I even wonder if we would be enslaved to money one day. Each character in the novel "Potatoes" had a quality of unimportance and lowliness and only regards money as the best thing in life; Pok-nyo is a woman who fell low and to her ruins and her husband worthy of a monster and Wang a man so heartless. The world doesn't seem to me so good as it should seem. Though I have still lot of to learn in life, I am not too young to tell what's good from bad and right from wrong and I can see that everyone is full of himself and self-centred. But I hope that there are still more of bright sides in human life, and from now on and to the future there will be hopeful days ahead of us.
