The Flower Ornament Scripture

一, 世主妙嚴品

      The Wonderful Adornments of the Leaders of the Worlds-1

三 世尊의 不可思議한 德 세존의 불가사의함을 말하다

1, 德의 根本

爾時에 世尊이 處于此座하사 於一切法에 成最正覺하시니

At that time, the Buddha, the World Honored One, in this setting, attained to supreme,

correct awareness of all things.<Thomas Cleary-번역본>

 그때 세존께서 이 자리에 계시사 일체법에서 최정각(最正覺)을 이루시었다

At that time, the World Honored One, seated on this throne,

2, 三業徧滿 신(身) . 구(口) . 의(意) 삼업의 불가사의

  (1) 意業

智入三世하야 悉皆平等하시며

His knowledge entered into all times which complete equanimity;

지혜는 삼세에 들어가서 모두 평등하여지고

其音이 普順十方國土하사

his voice universally accorded with all lands in the ten directions.

  (4) 譬喩 비유로써 밝히다

譬如虛空이 具含衆像호대 於諸境界에 無所分別하고 又如虛空이

普徧一切호대 於諸國土에 平等隨入하시니라

Like space. which contains all forms, he made no discrimination among all objects.

And, as space extends everywhere, the entered all lands with equanimity.

이는 마치 허공이 온갖 물상을 다 포함하고 있으면서도 모든 경계에

분별이 없는 것과 같았다.

또 허공이 일체 것에 두루하여 모든 국토에 평등하게 따라 들어가는 것과 같았다.

  3, 威勢 위의(威勢)가 뛰어나고 수승하다

身恒徧坐一切道場하사 菩薩衆中에 威光赫奕이

如日輪出하야 照明世界하시니라

His body forever sat omnipresent in all sites of enlightenment.

Among the host of enlightening beings, his awesome light shone clearly,

항상 일체 도량에 앉아계신 세존의 몸은 보살들 가운데서

그 빛나신 위엄이 혁혁하여

마치 해가 떠올라서 온 세계를 밝게 비추는 것과 같았다.

His physical form, eternal and ubiquitous, was seated in all bodhimandas.

In the midst of the Bodhisattva multitudes, the Buddha emitted awesome,

  4, 福德 복과 덕이 깊고 넓다

三世所行衆福大海가 悉已淸淨하시며

The ocean of myriad virtues which he practiced in all times was thoroughly pure,

삼세에 행하신 온갖 복덕의 바다는 다 청정하였다.

  6, 相好圓滿 상호가 원만하다.

無邊色相과 圓滿光明이 徧周法界하사대 等無差別하시니라

their boundless forms and spheres of light extending throughout the entire cosmos,

끝없는 색상과 원만한 광명이 온 법계에 두루하여 차별없이 평등하시니라.

  7, 說法 법을 연설함이 구름이 이는 듯하다.

演一切法하사대 如布大雲하시며

He expounded all truths, like spreading great clouds. <Thomas Cleary-번역본>

모든 법을 연설하시되 마치 큰 구름을 일으키는 듯하며,

  8, 衆生敎化 중생을 교화하는 몸이 자재하다.

一一毛端에 悉能容受一切世界하사대 而無障礙하야

各現無量神通之力하사 敎化調伏一切衆生하시니라

Each of his hairtips was able to contain all worlds without interference,

in each manifesting immeasurable spiritual powers,

낱낱 털끝에 일체 세계를 다 수용하되 아무런 장애가 없었다.

각각 한량없는 신통력을 나타내어 일체중생을 교화하고 조복하시며,

  9, 法身彌綸 법신(法身)이 두루하다.

身徧十方하사대 而無來往하시며

His body extended throughout the ten directions.

그 몸이 시방에 두루하면서도 아무런 왕래가 없었다.

  10, 智慧 지혜가 모든 형상에 다 들어간다.

智入諸相하사 了法空寂하시며

His knowledge entered into all forms and realized the emptiness of things.

그 지혜는 모든 형상 속에 다 들어가서 법이 공적함을 요달하시며,

 11, 諸佛神變 다른 많은 부처님의 세계와 신통을 함께 한다.

三世諸佛의 所有神變을 於光明中에 靡不咸覩하사

一切佛土不思議劫의 所有莊嚴을 悉令顯現케하시니라

All the miraculous displays of the Buddhas of past, present,

and future, were all seen in his light, and all the adornments of

inconceivable eons were revealed.<Thomas Cleary-번역본>

삼세제불의 신통변화를 광명 가운데서 모두 다 보시며,

모든 부처님 국토의 부사의한 겁에 있는 장엄들을

모두 다 나타나게 하셨다.

Every spiritual transformation of all Buddhas of the three periods of time without

exception was visible within that light, and all adornments of the lands of

all Buddhas throughout inconceivable eons were completely manifest therein

14살 코흘리게인 제가 참선을 하거나 경전을 공부하면서 재미를 느낀다면 좀 과장이겠지요, 우선 한문을 한글로 번역하면 한문공부가 됩니다. 그리고 나서 이미 번역된 한글본을 보면 내가 무슨 실수를 했는지 알 수 있습니다. 이게 제가 가장 중점으로 하는 공부입니다. 둘째 한글을 영어로 번역해봅니다. 그리고 번역된 것들과 비교를 해 보면 영어공부가 됩니다. 이렇게 해서 화엄경을 끝까지 공부하는데, 그리 많은 시간이 걸리지는 않을 것 같습니다. 배우고 분석해서 아는 공부는 20살까지만 하라는 것이 아버님의 간절한 당부입니다. 그 이후엔....

출판사로부터 오늘 큰스님께서 번역해 놓으신 화엄경 교재를 받았습니다. 그 동안 염화실의 자료실에 올려져 있는 풍부한 자료로 인하여 도움을 받았는데, 이제는 하나하나 대조하면서 공부해보겠습니다. 큰스님의 이런 위대한 번역이 없었다면 수많은 시간을 허송했을 것인데 하는 생각을 자꾸하게됩니다. 컴퓨터의 인덱싱 기술이 있으니 참 편리합니다. _()()()_

예, 잘 알겠습니다. 그렇지만 항상 문제의식을 가지고 여러가지 가능성을 탐구하겠습니다. 그것이 배우는 자세라고 생각합니다. 판본자체에는 문제가 없는지/한문에서 한글로 옮기는 과정에 큰스님들은 어떠한 고민을 하셨을지/ 이런 것까지도 미루어 짐작해 보도록 화엄경 공부에 정해진 3년의 기간 동안 고민해보겠습니다. 산스크리스트어를 더 깊이 공부하게 되면 그것들과 비교해보는 공부도 할 생각입니다. 능력은 부족하지만 소득은 있을 것이라 생각합니다._()()()_
