1741년, 곤경에 빠진 헨델에게 더블린으로부터 자선음악회 제안이 들어왔다. 그 제안은 헨델의 운명을 바꾸었을 뿐 아니라 음악 역사상 위대한 음악작품을 탄생시킨 된 계기를 마련했다. 헨델은 그 음악회를 위해 기념비적인 오라토리오

로 손꼽히는 [메시아]를 작곡해 오페라 작곡가로서 겪어야했던 경제적 실패를 만회할 수 있었으며 다시금 오라토리오 작곡가로서 우뚝 설 수 있다. 헨델은 뛰어난 오페라 작곡가로서 영국에서 큰 성공을 거두었으나 오페라단 운영 문제로 골치를 썩곤 했다.

여가수들의 변덕과 분쟁, 카스트라토¹⁾

들이 요구하는 천문학적인 출연료를 감당하지 못한 헨델은 결국 빚더미에 올라앉았고 극장은 문을 닫게 되었다. 설상가상으로 헨델은 뇌일혈로 반신불수가 되어 음표 하나 그릴 수 없는 처지가 되었다. 다행히 온천에서 요양을 한 후 기적적으로 건강을 회복한 헨델은 더블린의 음악회를 위한 새 작품의 작곡에 들어갔다. 그때 그가 선택한 작품은 오페라가 아닌 오라토리오였다. ‘오라토리오’(Oratorio)란 종교적 주제에 의한 극적 형식의 성악 음악극으로, 주인공들이 무대 의상을 입고 연기를 하지 않기에 제작비 부담이 적었다. 오페라 공연으로 파산을 겪은 헨델로서는 오라토리오야말로 그의 장점을 보여주면서도 경제적 부담을 줄일 수 있는 가장 좋은 음악이었다.

초연 대성공으로 오라토리오 작곡가로 우뚝 선 헨델

이미 찰스 젠넨스로부터 그리스도의 탄생과 수난, 부활의 내용을 다룬 오라토리오의 대본을 받아두었던 헨델은 1741년 8월 22일에 런던의 자택에서 곧바로 새 오라토리오 [메시아]의 작곡에 착수했다. 그의 작곡 속도는 놀라웠다. 헨델은 [메시아]의 제1부를 6일 만에, 제2부는 9일, 제3부는 3일 만에 완성했고, 관현악 편곡 작업은 2일 만에 끝냈다.

[메시아]는 부활절을 염두에 두고 작곡되었으나 오늘날에는 성탄절과 말에 자주 연주된다.

결국 9월 14일에 오라토리오 [메시아]는 완벽한 악보로 탄생했다. 연주시간이 거의 2시간에 달하는 이 대작을 겨우 24일 만에 완성했다는 것은 믿어지지 않는 일이다. 헨델 스스로도 [메시아]를 완성한 후 “신께서 나를 찾아오셨던 것만 같다”고 말했다. 헨델의 [메시아]가 초연되던 1742년 4월 13일, 더블린의 뮤직홀은 헨델의 신작을 들으려고 몰려든 청중들로 입추의 여지가 없었다. 입장권은 완전히 매진됐고 신문에서는 “혼잡을 피하기 위해 장소를 많이 차지하는 현란한 복장은 삼가라”로 경고하기도 했다. 신사들은 검을 차지 못했고 숙녀들은 스커트를 부풀리는 후프를 입어서는 안 되었다. 연주회장에 한 사람이라도 더 들어갈 수 있도록 공간을 확보하기 위해서였다. 결국 600석의 공연장에 700명이 끼어 앉아 헨델의 [메시아]를 들을 수 있었다.

초연은 대성공이었다. 더블린의 언론은 앞 다투어 헨델의 [메시아] 공연에 대한 극찬을 아끼지 않았다. 더블린 저널은 “숭고하고 장대하며 부드러운 음악”이라는 찬사를 보냈고, 엘핀의 주교 에드워드 싱 박사는 “헨델은 오라토리오 분야에서 내가 알고 있는 작곡가들보다 엄청나게 뛰어나지만 ‘메시아’라는 제목의 이 작품은 그 스스로를 능가한 것으로 보인다”고 말했다. 그는 [메시아]를 처음 듣고도 이 작품이 헨델의 작품들 가운데서도 매우 뛰어난 것임을 알아보았던 것이다.

오늘날의 청중에게도 [메시아]는 헨델의 많은 작품들 가운데 일반인들에 가장 친숙한 곡이다. 또한 성탄절에 즐겨 연주되고 있어 연말 분위기를 나타내는 음악이기도 하다. 그러나 헨델의 [메시아]는 그리스도의 탄생과 수난, 부활의 전 과정을 다루고 있기 때문에 굳이 성탄절에 연주되어야 하는 음악이라고 할 수는 없다. 헨델 자신도 부활절을 염두에 두고 이 곡을 작곡했다고 한다. 그러나 북아메리카에서 헨델의 [메시아]를 성탄절에 연주하는 관습이 확립되면서 오늘날 [메시아]는 성탄절과 연말에 공연되는 작품으로 자리매김하고 있다.

웅장한 ‘할렐루야’ 합창의 감동 – 신을 위한 찬가

헨델의 [메시아]는 모두 3부로 구성되었다. 제1부는 예언과 탄생, 제2부는 ‘수난과 속죄’, 제3부는 ‘부활과 영생’의 내용을 담고 있다. 가사는 신약의 복음서와 ‘고린도서’와 ‘요한묵시록’, 구약의 ‘시편’과 예언서 등을 바탕으로 하고 있으나 그리스도를 주제로 하는 바흐나 쉬츠의 작품들과는 매우 다른 느낌을 준다. 그것은 [메시아]의 텍스트가 예수의 탄생과 수난과 부활 사건이 구체적으로 묘사된 복음서보다는 오히려 구약의 예언서나 신약의 요한묵시록에 많은 비중을 두고 있어 그리스도의 탄생과 수난, 부활의 사건이 구체적으로 묘사되어있지 않기 때문이다.

[메시아]는 그리스도의 사건과 관련된 여러 성경 구절을 통해 명상하며 그리스도의 근원적인 의의를 찾고자 하는 시도를 보여준다. 악보 초판의 서문에 나타난 헨델의 말은 이를 증명하고 있다. “신의 뜻이야말로 위대하다. 지식과 지혜의 보배는 모두 신께 있다.” 음악학자 자크 샤이에의 말대로 “헨델의 [메시아]는 ‘그리스도의 이야기’라기보다는 사람의 아들의 영광, 신 자신의 영광의 찬가”인 것이다.

오라토리오가 대개 그러하듯, 헨델의 [메시아]도 오케스트라가 연주하는 서곡으로 시작해, 아리아와 중창, 레치타티보²⁾,

 합창 등 여러 형태의 노래가 나타나며 청중에게 다양한 인상을 전해준다. 헨델의 오라토리오는 특히 선율이 아름답고 화성이 명확하며 여러 성격의 음악이 대비되어 청중에게 즉각 다가가는 것이 장점이다. [메시아] 제1부의 경우 베이스가 낮고 강한 목소리로 오케스트라의 현란한 연주에 맞추어 화려한 멜리스마³⁾로 장식된 기교적인 아리아 ‘주 오시는 날 누가 능히 당하리’를 노래하는가 하면, 천사들이 양치기들에게 나타나 그리스도의 탄생 소식을 알리기 전에는 오케스트라가 매우 소박한 ‘파스토랄⁴⁾

을 연주하며 다채로운 분위기를 준다. 또한 그리스도의 수난과 속죄를 다루고 있는 제2부는 예수의 죽음으로 인해 극적인 긴장감이 높아지며, 부활에 대한 신념이 부각된 제3부는 부활을 나타내는 밝은 빛으로 가득하다. [메시아]를 이루는 수많은 합창과 중창, 아리아를 듣다보면 복잡하고 화려한 음악과 단순하고 명쾌한 음악의 조화에 절로 감탄하게 될 것이다.

헨델은 특히 합창에 있어 타의 추종을 불허한다. [메시아] 중에도 매우 뛰어난 합창곡들이 많은데 그 중에서도 제2부의 마지막을 장식하는 합창 ‘할렐루야’가 가장 유명하다. [메시아]의 영국 초연 당시 국왕 조지 2세가 ‘할렐루야’의 장엄한 합창을 듣고 너무 놀라 벌떡 일어났다는 일화는 유명하다. 그래서 오늘날에도 [메시아] 중 ‘할렐루야’ 합창이 연주될 때는 청중 모두 기립하는 것이 전통으로 남아있다. 헨델은 [메시아]의 합창곡에서 선율과 화성에 중점을 두면서도 각 가사에 해당하는 선율들을 여러 방식으로 엮어내며 그가 대위법⁵⁾

의 대가임을 증명해보였다. ‘할렐루야’ 합창에서도 가사의 ‘할렐루야’에 해당하는 리듬을 마치 반복 후렴구나 반주처럼 사용하면서 ‘전능의 주가 다스리신다’의 선율과 결합해내는 걸 보면, 음표를 자유자재로 다뤘던 대가다운 손길을 느낄 수 있다.

A wonderful performance! You Tube doesn't share the info, but the director is Vaclav Lucs, and that fabulous alto is Delphine Galou. The group is Collegium 1704, in Prague. No info on where this was performed. They have a Bach B minor mass, too!
