수업시간에 중요하다고 강조했던 양보의 뜻을 표현하는 접속사(although/though/even though)와 전치사(in spite of/despite)를 비교해서 보충학습을 해 봅시다.
Last year Jack and Jill spent their holidays by the sea.
It rained a lot but they enjoyed themselves.
1. Although it rained a lot, they enjoyed themselves.
or
2. In spite of the rain, they enjoyed themselves.
<1 & 2 설명>
하지만 in spite of는 전치사이므로 주어+동사대신 명사(the rain)가 뒤에 따르게 됩니다.
<다른 예제들>
Although the traffic was bad, I arrived on time.
In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time.
I couldn't sleep although I was very tired.
I couldn't sleep despite being very tired.
*although나 in spite of(=despite)로 이끌어진 종속절의 뜻은 동일하게 주절과 연결되어집니다.
<although와 because의 비교>
1. We went out although it was raining.
vs.
2. We didn't go out because it was raining.
<in spite of와 because of의 비교>
1. We went out in spite of the rain.
vs.
2. We didn't go out because of the rain.
*위의 부가적인 설명(although vs. because)과 동일한 경우죠? 잘 구별해서 앞으로 응용하세요.
<기타 내용들>
*in spite of와 despite는 같아요.
*만약 even though를 쓴다면 although보다 양보의 뜻이 더 강해져요.
*though는 미국 구어체에서 문장끝에 쓰는 경우가 아주 일반적이에요.
e. g.)
1. I don't like him. He is cute though.(=but he is cute)
2. I see him every day. I've never spoken to him though.(=but I've never spoken to him)
