Shine City Project
Six Mile Cove – Lake Mohave
September 28, 2019
On September 28, 2019, Shine City Project made its way to the shores of Lake Mohave! An hour and a half drive from Las Vegas, Lake Mohave is a reservoir on the Colorado River that flows south from the Hoover Dam to the Davis Dam. Lake Mohave formed after the completion of the Davis Dam in 1951 near Laughlin, Nevada, which was used to regulate the water that would flow to Mexico. Sixty-seven miles in length, Lake Mohave provides opportunities for recreational activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and scuba diving.
In honor of National Public Lands Day, Shine City Project joined Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Get Outdoors Nevada, and other organizations for a cleanup at Six Mile Cove at Lake Mohave! Six Mile Cove is a popular place for visitors during the summer months, but a lot of litter was left behind in the past few months. We had ten volunteers representing Shine City Project! For one of our volunteers, it was his first time to join our group! As we were cleaning up, the most common items that we found were glass and plastic bottles, straws, and food packaging. At the end of the cleanup, with the help of all of the volunteers, a total of 1,000 pounds of glass and 12 cubic yards of trash and debris was removed from the area!
After our hard work, we were able to enjoy a delicious lunch at Lake Mohave! A couple of our volunteers had prepared delicious Korean japchae noodles and some special fettuccine alfredo with chicken! Other volunteers were able to bring fruit, snacks, and drinks as well! Before heading back to Las Vegas, we spent some time resting and enjoying the peacefulness and beauty of Lake Mohave! A few volunteers were able to go swimming while others enjoyed skipping rocks across the lake. Overall, we had a great time at Lake Mohave!
