당신은 어디로 가고 있나요?

당신이 찾고 있는 생명을

당신은 결코 찾지 못할 거예요.

신들이 인간을 창조했을 때,

그들은 죽음을 인간의 몫으로 나누어주었고,

생명은 그들이 가져가 버렸기 때문이죠.

그대, 길가메쉬여!

당신의 배를 가득 채우세요.

밤과 낮으로 즐거운 일을 만들고,

매일 향연은 베푸세요.

밤이나 낮이나 춤과 노래가 울려 퍼지게 하세요.

깨끗한 옷을 입고 머리와 몸을 씻으세요.

당신이 손안에 품고 있는 아이를 보시고

당신의 아내가 당신 품 안에서 기뻐하게 하세요.

이러한 일들만이 인간이 관심 가져야 할 일이랍니다.

살아있는 인간은 모두 죽기 위해 태어나서

누구도 진정한 행복을 자랑할 수 없소.

우리에게 일어나는 일들을 침착한 마음을 가지고 견뎌내세요.

지나치게 기뻐하지 말고 너무 슬퍼하지 말아요.

우리가 보고 겪으며 지나가는 일에 대해서.

순례자와 같이 우리는 정해진 곳을 향해 가요.

세상은 하나의 여인숙이며 죽음은 여행의 끝입니다.

사람이 죽어야만 하는 존재일지라도

사람이 행한 일은 그 사람이 죽은 뒤에 계속 살아남으며

불멸의 척도는 이 업적 속에 있습니다.

* 카르페 디엠(Carpe diem)은 라틴어이며 영어(Seize the day)현재를 잡아라는 뜻이다. 라틴어 카르페(Carpe) 뽑다, 즐기다, 잡다, 이용하다. 디엠(Diem)은 디에스(dies) 일일, 날의 목적격이다. 현재를 즐기라는 뜻이며 메소포타미아 길기메시 서사시의 결말이다.

길가메시 서사시 (Epic of Gilgamesh)는 (BC 2600)고대 메소포타미아의 수메르 우루크의 왕 길가메시(Gilgaméš)의 서사시다.

Where are you going?

You will never find the life you seek.

When the gods created man,

They gave him death as his portion,

And life they took away.

You, Gilgamesh!

Fill your belly.

Make merry day and night,

And feast every day.

Let dance and song resound through the night and day.

Wear clean clothes, wash your head and body.

Look at the child you hold in your hands,

And let your wife rejoice in your arms.

These are the only things that man should be interested in.

All living men are born to die,

And no one can boast of true happiness.

Endure calmly what happens to us.

Do not be too happy, nor too sad.

About what we see and experience and pass by.

Like pilgrims, we go to a set place. The world is an inn, and death is the end of the journey.

Even though people are mortal beings,

the things they do live on after they die,

and the measure of immortality lies in this achievement.

* Carpe diem is a Latin word meaning to seize the day. The Latin word Carpe means to pull out, enjoy, seize, and use. Diem is the objective case of dies, day. It means to enjoy the present and is the conclusion of the Epic of Gilgamesh from Mesopotamia.
