존 하이어트는 미국에 인디아나출신의 작곡가이자. 피아니스트. 기타리스트이다. 뉴웨이브, 블루스 ,컨트리 등 다양한 음악을 해왔는데, 그의 독창적인 음악과 수 많은 음악적인 작업들으로 열일곱번나 그래미에 노미네이트 되었고, 많은 분야에서 수상을 하였다.

고등학교 졸업후 바로 18살때 부터 내쉬빌로 온 하이어트씨는 작은 크럽들에서 연주를 하고 작곡을 하였는데, 그의 노래는 몇몇 아티스트와 내쉬빌의 레코드회사에서 녹음이 된다, 특히 Three Dog Night의 노래는 커다란 히트를 하게 되어, 이 수입으로 하이어트는 Epic레코드에서 첫번째 앨범을 계약을 할수 있게 되었고, 이후에는 18개의 스튜디오 앨범과 2개의 라이브 앨범 등 많은 앨범을 발매를 하였다.

1974년 이후 epic record에서 두개의 앨범을 발매를 하였는데 비평가들로부터 찬사를 받았지만, 두개의 앨범 모두 상업적으로는 실패를 맞본 앨범이다. 하이어트의 초기의 앨범 작업들은 작품성과 완성도에도 불구하고 잘 인정을 받지 못하다가 1980년 이후 인생의 중후반에 이르러서야 크게 인정을 받고 널리 알려지게 되었다.
