바르바라 성녀

 바르바라는 로마 막시미아누스 황제가 크리스트 교인들을 학살한 4세기 초에 로마의 지배를 받는 그리스 니코메디아(튀르키에 이즈미트) 디오스 코루스 왕의 딸이었다. 왕은 귀하고 아름답고 영리한 딸을 편애하며 자랑하는 것이 일생의 보람이었다. 바르바라는 아버지가 믿는 로마의 신과 그리스 신에 대하여 아버지에게 듣고 배우며 믿게 되었다. 밖의 세상을 모르는 바르바나에게 그리스와 로마의 신들은 보복 전쟁을 일삼는 가장 무서운 존재였다. 신들의 공포에 떨며 살다 죽으면 영혼까지 지하에서 산다는 것이 불만이었다.

사춘기가 된 바르바라가 가장 인간적이라고 숭배한 아프로디테 여신의 사랑에 흥미를 느끼고 외출을 열망하며 창밖을 바라보았다. 왕은 선하고 아름다운 바르바라가 불량한 사람들과 접촉하지 못하게 단속하였다. 창가에 나타난 바르바나의 아름다운 얼굴을 본 사람들 창 밖에 모여들었다. 불안을 느낀 왕은 탑을 만들어서 그 속에 바르바나를 가두웠다.

바르바나는 왕이 로마에 가고 없는 사이에 탑에서 나와서 예수 크리스트 복음을 전도하는 전도자를 만났다.

"그리스와 로마의 신들은 사람들에게 복종과 숭배만 바란다. 이 세상은 죄악으로 물들었다. 세상은 만들고 다스리는 하나님은 사람들의 죄를 심판하기 위하여 예수 크리스트를 이 땅에 보냈다. 예수 크리스트는 사람이 죽으면 영혼이 있고 그 영혼이 살 수 있는 하늘나라가 있다고 알리며 사람들에게 죄를 회개하고 천국으로 가라고 하면서 뉘우치는 사람에게 천국으로 갈 권리를 주었다. 천국을 인정하지 않고 메시아 예수를 부정하는 사람들이 예수를 죽였다. 예수는 죽었다 살아나서 천국으로 올라 가며 다시 올 것이라고 말했다."

전도자가 이렇게 말했다. 바르바라는 가장 인간적인 예수 크리스트교의 진리를 깨닫고 전도자에게 세례를 받았다. 바르바나는 탑속에 갇혀 사는 것을 예수 크리스트의 은혜로 여겼다.

로마로 간 아버지가 돌아오지 않았다. 사람들이 여행중에 사고로 죽은 것으로 여겼다. 바르바라도 아버지가 죽을 것으로 여기고 탑에서 나왔다. 목공을 불러서 여호와 예수 성령을 기념하기 위하여 탑에 세 개의 창문을 만들었다. 죽은 것으로 여겼던 아버지 왕이 로마에서 돌아왔다. 왕은 바르바라를 다시 탑에 가뒀다. 탑에 창문이 생긴 것을 보고 바르바라가 예수 크리스트를 믿는 것을 알았다. 왕은 창문을 막고 바르바라에게 이 나라는 물론 세계를 지배하는 로마 황제가 예수 크리스트를 믿는 신자들을 모두 죽인다고 말하며 믿지 말라고 사정하였다. 그러나 바르바라는 아버지의 말을 듣지 않았다.

왕은 장관들을 모아 놓고 바르바라를 형틀에 묶고 바르바라가 황제의 명령을 어기고 예수 크리스트를 믿으며 왕인 아버지의 명까지 어긴 죄인이라고 선포하고 직접 곤장을 쳤다. 바르바라가 실신하자 로바 총독 법정으로 이송했다. 총독부 재판관이 왕의 딸임을 감안하여 예수 크리스트교를 믿지 말라하고 설득하였으나 바르바라는 거부했다. 재판관은 형집행 관리에게 쇠갈고리로 온 못을 찢어 피를 훌리게하고, 불에 달군 인두로 옆구리를 태워서 죽을 때까지 감옥에 가두라고 하였다.

밤중에 예수 크리스트 성령이 나타나서 바르바라를 살리고 상처를 치료했다. 다음날 감옥지기가 죽지 않고 살아서 앉아있는 바르바라를 보고 기절했다. 감옥장이 와서 보고 재판관에게 보고했다. 재판관이 바르바라를 소환하여 직접 보고 놀라 얼마 동안 말을 못 하고 있다가 겨우 이유를 물었다. 바르바라가 예수의 성령이 살려주고 치료했다고 말했다.

재판관이 몹시 긴장하며 예수를 믿지말고 아버지 왕에게 용서를 빌라고 사정했다. 바르바라는 마음을 바꾸지 않았다. 재판관은 계속 설득하였으나 바르바라는 거부했다. 재판관은 바르바라를 죽이고 싶지 않아서 배심원까지 동원하여 재판을 열었다. 배심원들이 바르바라의 아버지를 참석시켜 놓고 예수를 버리라고 사정하였으나 바르바라는 거절했다. 바르바라 아버지가 오히려 더 사형형을 선고하라고 재촉했다. 재판관이 사형을 선고했다.

바르바라는 사형형을 집행하는 광장으로 끌려갔다. 소문을 들은 사람들이 광장으로 모여들었다. 형집관들이 바르바라를 매고 높은 단두대로 올라갔다. 육중한 칼날을 위로 올려 고정시키고 바르바라의 목을 칼날 아래 놓고 묶었다. 형벌 집행관들이 레버를 잡고 주저했다. 바르바라 아버지가 형틀로 올라가서 집행관들을 밀치고 레버를 당겼다. 육중한 칼날이 아래로 떨어지는 순간 하늘에서 벼락이 떨어지며 바르바라 아버지가 불에 타서 재가 되고 바라바라 피가 재로 번졌다.

Sancta Barbara

Barbara was the daughter of King Dios Korus of Nicomedia (Izmit, Turkey), a city under Roman rule in the early 4th century, when the Roman Emperor Maximian massacred Christians.

The king favored his precious, beautiful, and intelligent daughter and bragged about her, which was the joy of his life. Barbara learned about the Roman and Greek gods that her father believed in from her father and came to believe in them.

To Barbara, who did not know the outside world, the Greek and Roman gods were the most terrifying beings who waged revenge wars. She was dissatisfied with the fact that when she died, her soul would live underground.

When Barbara reached puberty, she became interested in the love of the goddess Aphrodite, whom she worshipped as the most human, and looked out the window, longing to go out. The king prevented the good and beautiful Barbara from coming into contact with bad people. People who saw Barbara's beautiful face at the window gathered at the window. Feeling uneasy, the king built a tower and locked Barbara in it.

While the king was away in Rome, Barbara came out of the tower and met a preacher who preached the gospel of Jesus Christ.

‘The gods of Greece and Rome only want obedience and worship from people. This world is stained with sin. God, who created and governed the world, sent Jesus Christ to this earth to judge people’s sins. Jesus Christ told people that when people die, they have souls and that there is a heaven where those souls can live, and told people to repent their sins and go to heaven, giving the right to go to heaven to those who repented. Those who did not recognize heaven and denied the Messiah Jesus killed Jesus. Jesus said that he died and rose again, ascended to heaven, and would come again.’

The preacher said. Barbara realized the most human truth of Jesus Christianity and was baptized by the preacher. Barbara considered living in the tower as a grace of Jesus Christ.

Her father, who had gone to Rome, did not return. People thought he had died in an accident during the trip. Barbara also thought her father would die and came out of the tower. She called a carpenter and made three windows in the tower to commemorate Jehovah Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The king, who was thought to be dead, returned from Rome. The king locked Barbara in the tower again. When he saw a window in the tower, he knew that Barbara believed in Jesus Christ. The king blocked the window and told Barbara not to believe that the Roman emperor, who ruled not only this country but also the world, would kill all believers in Jesus Christ. However, Barbara did not listen to her father.

The king gathered his ministers, tied Barbara to the stake, and declared that Barbara was a criminal who disobeyed the emperor's orders, believed in Jesus Christ, and even disobeyed the orders of her father, the king. He personally beat her with a stick. When Barbara fainted, he transferred her to the court of the governor general. The judge of the governor general tried to persuade her not to believe in Jesus Christ, considering that she was the king's daughter, but Barbara refused. The judge ordered the executioner to tear all the nails with an iron hook so that the blood would flow, and to burn her side with a hot iron so that she would be imprisoned until she died.

The spirit of Jesus Christ appeared in the middle of the night and saved Barbara and healed her wounds. The next day, the prison keeper fainted when he saw Barbara sitting alive instead of dead. The prison keeper came and reported to the judge. The judge summoned Barbara and saw her in person. After being surprised and speechless for a while, he finally asked her why. Barbara said that the spirit of Jesus saved her and healed her.

The judge was very nervous and begged her not to believe in Jesus and to ask her father, the king, for forgiveness. Barbara did not change her mind. The judge continued to persuade her, but Barbara refused. The judge did not want to kill Barbara, so he even called in a jury to hold a trial. The jury asked Barbara’s father to attend and beg her to abandon Jesus, but Barbara refused. Barbara’s father even urged him to sentence her to death. The judge sentenced her to death.

Barbara was taken to the square where the executions were to be carried out. People who heard the rumor gathered in the square. The executioners tied Barbara up and went up to the high scaffold. They raised the heavy blade and fixed it in place, and tied Barbara’s neck under the blade. The executioners hesitated as they held the lever. Father Barbara climbed onto the rack, pushed the executioners aside, and pulled the lever. The moment the heavy blade fell, lightning struck from the sky, Father Barbara was burned to ashes, and Barbara's blood spread to the ashes.
