A CRY FOR HELP: DISASTER IN THE DESERT

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(OC): And today the United Nations asked the world to help.  [1]A humanitarian crisis of new and epic proportions is descending on a part of the world most of us have never seen.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(VO): You might remember last year, ABC News was the first network to report on the crisis in the African nations of Kenya and Somalia in East Africa, our David Muir [2]witnessing the desperation first hand.  Well, tonight a new food crisis across the continent, [3]stretching across eight nations in West Africa.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(VO): The UN Said 18 million people are in danger.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(VO): Three million children [4]on the brink of starvation.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)(VO): It took ABC's Bazi Kanani two days to [5]reach the people in need in and our special coverage is called, "A Cry for Help."

BAZI KANANI (ABC NEWS)(VO): Getting here isn't easy.  We [6]take a series of plane rides followed by a difficult drive.  When we arrived at a village called Goubeyday, this is what greeted us.  [7]Deathly silence.  Men, women and children, so hungry they are [8]listless, losing a battle.  Mothers such as Mariama can no longer feed her three children.  Today, they ate leaves.

BAZI KANANI (ABC NEWS)(OC): Is this all you have cooked for your family today?

BAZI KANANI (ABC NEWS)(VO): Mariama is now eating so little, her body can't produce enough breast milk to feed her six-month-old baby.  All she can do, is [9]place traditional charms around little Kandey's neck, hoping [10]good luck will ward off illness.  Families here depend on farming, but [11]this drought has taken everything from them.  [12]It ruined last year's crop.  If there is no rain in the next four months, another harvest will be lost.  [13]Just making it through today is harrowing enough.

BAZI KANANI (ABC NEWS)(VO): They hand over their children, and watch as they [14]are weighed in buckets.  They are measured.  Their fate, [15]a color wrapped around tiny arms.  Green is best, [16]their body holding on.  But you hardly see any green.  [17]Yellow is worrying, too thin.  Red means [18]severe malnutrition.

BAZI KANANI (ABC NEWS)(OC): This child is a year old, really?

BAZI KANANI (ABC NEWS)(VO): Little Nafisa, 1 year old, is red.  [19]She weighs just eight pounds, what many American babies [20]weigh at birth.  Today she is lucky.  She'll get a meal, [21]a nutritional supplement made up of peanuts and vitamins.  A meal from the [22]aid groups here, who are [23]sounding the alarm now, before this [24]turns into an all-out disaster.

DENISE BROWN (WORLD FOOD PROGRAM): I don't think any of us can accept that this mother has to go and [25]pick wild food for her children to eat and if she doesn't go and do it every day, then they don't have anything to eat.
