48) Friday, April 6: Along the Midi Canal in Southern France

   Suzhou, China, boasts the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (京杭大運河), a Sui Dynasty-built masterpiece, second only to the Great Wall. It stretches from Beijing to Hangzhou and passes directly through the heart of Suzhou. When I traveled there, I noticed waterways woven throughout the city. These canals fostered the development of Suzhou's agriculture and industry, and it became particularly renowned for its silk, which was later exported to Europe via the Silk Road.

Along that stream lies Hansansa Temple. Hansansa Temple is famous for the monks Hansan and Sseukdeok, but it became even more famous for the poem "Maple Bridge Night" (楓橋夜泊) written by the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji.

  중국 소주에는 만리장성 다음으로 만든 작품인 수나라 때 건설한 경항 대운하(京杭 大運河)가 있다.
북경에서 항주까지 이어지는데 바로 소주의 중심부를 지나간다. 이곳을 여행했을 때 소주 시내 곳곳에는 수로가 퍼져 있었다. 이 운하로 소주는 농업과 공업이 발달되었고, 특히  비단으로 유명하여 Silk Road를 통하여 유럽으로 전파되었다.
그 물길을 따라가는 곳에 한산사(寒山寺)가 있다.
이 한산사는 한산(寒山)스님과 습득(拾得)스님으로 유명하지만, 당나라 때 시인 장계(張繼)가 지은 풍교야박(楓橋夜泊)이라는 시로 더욱 유명한곳이 되어 버렸다.

This poem was written by Zhang Ji, who heard the lonely sound of a bell ringing as he passed Hansansa Temple on his boat at dawn on his way back from failing the civil service examination several times.

이 시는 장계(張繼)가 몇 차례 과거 시험에 낙방하고 돌아오는 새벽녘에
배를 타고 한산사 부근을 지날 때 쓸쓸히 울려 퍼지는 종소리를 듣고 지은 것이다.

The Canal du Midi, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 17th century and holds great significance as a 360 km network of waterways connecting the Atlantic and Mediterranean Seas through 328 structures.
Along the Canal du Midi, we will pass by historic towns like Carcassonne, a treasured historical destination. Under the lush trees lining both sides of the canals, and amidst the expansive countryside and vineyards, we have the delightful pleasure of parking our car alongside the canals and strolling along whenever we feel like it.
The Canal du Midi (Midi Canal) begins in the picturesque Mediterranean port city of Sète and flows through Narbonne, known for its beautiful cathedral, Carcassonne, known for its majestic castle that served as the model for Disneyland, Toulouse, the economic center of France today, and Bordeaux, world-renowned for its wine, before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
A cruise along this waterway, which has been aesthetically and architecturally harmoniously designed to offer scenic beauty and has contributed significantly to the industrial development of southern France, offers travelers weary of city life the dual benefit of both sightseeing and relaxation.
The natural beauty of the area—beautiful plane trees, a bike path stretching along the waterway, and vineyards that change color with the seasons—makes cruisers stop by repeatedly. A canal runs through the village of Baziege, 25 kilometers from Toulouse. To experience the Canal du Midi firsthand, I parked my car and walked around the canal.

                          달은 지고 까마귀 우는데 하늘 가득 서리 내리고
                          강촌교와 풍교의 고깃배 불빛을 마주해 시름 속에 조는데
                          고소성(蘇州城) 밖 한산사(寒山寺)에서
                          한밤에 울리는 종소리는 나그네 배까지 들려오누나.




유네스코에 의해 세계 역사 유적지로 분류 지정된 미디 운하는 17세기 뛰어난 기술 공학적 성취물 중 하나로서 360Km의 수로망이 328개의 구조물에 의해 대서양과 지중해를 연결하고 있다는 점에서 그 높은 의의를 지니고 있다.


미디 운하를 따라  우리는 소중한 역사 관광지인 카르카손 같은 풍부한 역사 유적 도시들을 지날 것이다.
운하들 양쪽을 따라 길게 늘어선 아름드리나무들 아래, 넓게 펼쳐진 전원과 포도밭, 마음이 내키시면 언제든지 운하 옆에 차를 세우고 산책하는 별미의 기쁨을 가졌다.
 Canal du Midi(미디 운하)는 지중해의 운치 있는 항구 도시 Sete에서 출발해 대성당의 아름다움으로 알려진  Narbonne, 디즈니랜드의 모델이 되었다는 장엄한 고성으로 알려진 Carcassonne를 지나 오늘날 프랑스 경제의 중심지인 Toulouse, 와인으로 세계적 명성을 떨친 Bordeaux 등의 중세도시들을 거쳐 대서양으로 흘러가고 있습니다.
 미적, 건축학적으로 조화롭게 만들어져 경관이 좋고, 프랑스 남부의 산업 발전에 크게 기여 해 온 이 수로를 따라 가며 하는 유람선 여행은 도시 생활에 지친 여행자들에게 관광과 휴식을 동시에 제공하는 두 가지 효과를 기대할 수 있다.
아름드리 플라타너스 나무들과 그 옆으로 수로를 따라 뻗은 자전거 전용도로와 계절마다 색을 달리하는 포도밭 등의 자연은 유람선을 타고 가는 이들이 몇 번이고 쉬어가게 하는 매력적인 요소가 되기도 한다.
뚤르즈에서 25Km 떨어진 Baziege 마을에는 운하가 통과하고 있다.
이곳 미디 운하를 직접 체험하기위해 차를 세우고 운하 주변을 다녀 보았다.

The yacht is home to a husband, son, and a dog. A baby is reportedly sleeping inside. The yacht is said to have well-appointed rooms, like a hotel.

이 욧트는 호텔같이 방이 잘 꾸며 있다고 한다.

He's holding onto a rope to keep the boat anchored until the lock fills with water. The bicycle is unusual.

Travelers visiting the Canal du Midi are primarily Europeans, including Americans, British, and Germans, with Americans reportedly making up the largest proportion. Yachts are often called floating apartments, offering comfortable amenities like bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Charter boats of various sizes are available, accommodating from two to twelve people.

The cost of the yacht, which typically ranges from €500 to €1,200 per week depending on the number of people, is said to be €1,000 for a seven-day charter, which can accommodate a family of four, to take a yacht trip along the Midi Canal during the Easter holiday and explore the tourist attractions along the canal. The cost of the seven-day charter, including lock passage fees and fuel, is said to be €1,000.

I believe that Korea desperately needs a canal like this. Canal policies, which countries around the world have or are developing, are crucial for multi-purpose projects such as streamlining 21st-century logistics, revitalizing the inland economy, protecting the natural environment, mitigating global warming, addressing water shortages, and developing leisure and tourism industries.
