We are here now, we are the main topic of discussion at all forums around the world and we need to be sure to stay united and have a clear message, so, to begin the keynote, I'd like to start with what is esports, but not rather defining what esports is yet, but is esports really a sport.
So, let's start by defining our communities. We have the esports community which is the largest and freshest community on the planet earth. We're speaking about a multicultural polio-graphic family of 2.7 billion video game players worldwide, additionally a community of over 700 million people who are gaming daily and also watching and consuming gaming content. The gaming industry last year grew from 120 billion dollars to 140 billion dollars the actual number is 139 billion and something so almost 140 billion and the growth is expected to continue. Esports and gaming are larger than all the movies combined, all the music industry combined, and all the sports together as one.
This community needs to be protected, supported and developed and what I mean by that is that responsible gaming means esports we need to promote responsible gaming inside of our community, inside of our ecosystem, besides the athletes and the gamers that we just previously mentioned.
The esports community is very diverse and as we can tell by the numbers, we need to mention that it is comprised of a lot of different types of games a lot of different types of esports and this is important to spend a second on that. When we speak about esports, we speak about the pure sport digitization, where you are doing an action exactly like in that sport to effectuate a result in the game which allows you digitally to compete against other people a great example of this would be what the UCI is doing with swift with cycling where I can be cycling at home and competing against you from your home, or even at the highest level cycling digitally together. That would be one polar side of the esports. Family and community and the complete other side is where the physical aspect that results the win or the advantage is not so much involved in the game itself.
On the other side, we can see chess for example, where my mental ability is judging the result in the game and everything in between. So, the difference between the two sides of esports is the combination between physical requirement and mental requirement and this is something that most people don't mention when they speak about esports. Esports is an activity that greatly stimulates educates and trains the mental aspect of humans absolutely, and this goes back to talking about are we a sport.
In defining what constitutes a sport, we witness its evolution alongside technology, from ancient practices like hunting to modern adaptations such as spear throwing in the Olympics. Esports exemplifies this evolution as a technologically driven sport, where competitors follow rules, train rigorously, and compete for victory, akin to traditional sports. As we conclude, it is crucial to integrate esports into the wider sporting community, fostering unity and collaboration across all sports. Recognizing esports as a definitive sport not only acknowledges its impact but also paves the way for collective growth and respect within the sporting world. Thank you very much.
