10. Tian Ze Lu (Heaven over Lake / Hexagram 10 :Treading). Lu......2.
▣ The lmage says : Heaven above and the Lake below form Lu(Treading).
The noble man(Junzi), in accordance with this, distinguishes above and below,
and settles the minds/will of the people.
[Explanation]
The lmage says : The image of Heaven being above and the Lake below is
the Lu Hexagram(履卦,이괘).
The noble man must observe this closely, thoroughly examine high and low as well
as all directions, and properly guide and settle the will of the people.
[Commentary]
Strong Heaven is above, and the gentle and calm Lake is below.
This symbolizes a beautiful young woman walking together with a man who knows
how to control his desires.
In such times, a noble man(Junzi) must examine all directions, clearly distinguish between
the noble and the humble, and properly esstablish propriety(禮,예 - Li).
Therefore, Lu(履,이 - Treading), which resembles a tiger seeking prey,
must maintain propriety even after obtaining all things,
which is why it is placed right after Xiao Chu(小畜,소축 - Small Restraint).
The Xici Zhuan(繫辭傳,계사전 - Commentary on the Appended Phrases) also advises :
"In treading through the world, virtuous conduct must first be solid as a foundation,
and one must never forget that harmony prioritizing closeness is supreme."
Thus, the Lu Hexagram(履卦,이괘) teaches that one must act in harmony with the world.
Cheng Yi's commentary on the Great Symbolism is as follows :
"If one's position was not appropriate, the monarch did not elevate them.
When a scholar cultivated learning to its utmost depth,
the monarch sought him out; it was not driven by the scholar's own doing.
This is because the monarch distinguished between high and low,
appointing people appropriate for their respective stations."
This means that even if a scholar possessed outstanding abilities,
if acting in harmony with the world was hindered, he was immediately dismissed from office.
One who practices treading in this manner moves continuously alongside the world,
meaning they do not remain stuck in one place [不處,불처 - Bu Chu].
Elaborating on 'Distinguishing high and low to settle the minds of the people
First, the Lu Hexagram(履卦,이괘) is a variation of the Guai Hexagram (夬卦,쾌괘),
where the 3rd line of Guai has moved.
The single Yin(陰,음) line in the Guai Hexagram (夬卦,쾌괘) occupied the space above Heaven,
riding upon five Yang(陽,양) lines, representing an extreme state of failing to distinguish
between high and low.
Thus, by suooressing Tui (兌,태 - ☱) and sending it beneath Heaven,
the propriety of Li (离,리 - ☲) shines brightly.
Furthermore, by invoking the yielding spirit of Xun (巽,손 - ☴) and distinguishing
between high and low through Li (离,리 - ☲),
the distinction between high and low became clearly evident.
Meanwhile, during the Guai Hexagram (夬卦,쾌괘), five Yang(陽,양) lines were continuous,
and Qian (乾,건 - ☰)―representing tyrannical rule―was so overly dominant
that the people did not obey.
However, when Guai (夬卦,쾌괘) transforms into Lu (履卦,이괘) ,
the ruler of Qian (乾,건 - ☰) resides above in full dignity, and the people bow below;
thus, the purpose of Li (离,리 - ☲) becomes brilliantly clear,
signifying Jeong Min Zhi(정민지)―settling the minds of the people―through boedience
to royal decrees.
In historical records, incidents involving the compromise of social hierarchy,
abuses of moral justification, and office-buying/corruption are frequently explained
through the Lu Hexagram(履卦,이괘).
