6. The Best Wish

Two angels in heaven were arguing about the souls on earth. One, a pessimist, felt that all souls were selfish and unworthy of redemption.

하늘에 있는 두 천사가 지상에 있는 영혼들에 대해 논쟁을 벌이고 있었습니다.  비관론자인 한 천사는 모든 영혼은 이기적이고 구원받을 자격이 없다고 생각했습니다.

The other, an optimist felt that they were good and kind. After much arguing, the two made a bet.

다른 한 천사는 낙관주의자로서 모든 영혼은 선하고 친절하다고 생각했습니다.  두 사람은 많은 논쟁 끝에 내기를 걸었습니다.

The angel who felt people were selfish bet that the optimist couldn't find three good, kind people in three days. 

사람들이 이기적이라고 생각한 천사는 낙관주의자가 사흘 안에 착하고 친절한 사람 세 명을 찾지 못할 것이라고 내기를 걸었습니다.

Disguising himself as a beggar, the optimist came down to earth wandering from town to town.

낙천주의자는 거지로 변장하고 지상으로 내려와 이 마을 저 마을을 돌아다녔습니다.

He came to a small village where he heard of three brothers whose parents had died and left the boys a farm outside of town, which had a pear tree.

어느 작은 마을에 도착한 그는 부모님이 돌아가신 세 형제가 마을 외곽에 배나무가 있는 농장에 살고 있다는 이야기를 들었습니다.

The fruit from this tree fed them and also brought a good price in the market.

이 나무의 열매는 그들을 먹여 살렸고 시장에서 좋은 가격을 받았습니다.

The angel arrived at their home and asked the eldest brother if he could spare some fruit for a hungry man.

천사는 형제의 집에 도착해 맏형에게 배고픈 사람을 위해 과일을 좀 나누어줄 수 있는지 물었습니다.

The brother looked at the man and said "this tree belongs not only to me but to my brothers. But here is the pear I would have had for lunch. You take it." 

한 형제는 그 남자를 바라보며 "이 나무는 나뿐만 아니라 내 형제들의 것입니다.  하지만 여기 내가 점심으로 먹을 배는 있습니다. 당신이 가지세요.“

The angel took the pear and thought him to be a good and kind man. 

천사는 배를 받아 들고는 그 남자가 착하고 친절한 사람이라고 생각했습니다.

The next day, the angel visited the home again.

다음날 천사는 다시 그 집을 방문했습니다.

This time, the middle brother was watching the tree. Once again, he asked for some fruit from the tree.

이번에는 두째 형이 나무를 보고 있었습니다.  다시 한번 천사는 그에게 나무에 있는 열매 몇 개를 달라고 말했습니다.

The middle brother told the angel that this tree belonged to his brothers too. But he offered the beggar his share instead. 

두째 형도 천사에게 이 나무는 형제들의 것이라고 말했습니다. 하지만 그는 대신 거지에게 자신의 몫을 주었습니다.

Pleased that the angel found two good souls, on the third day he visited the house again.

천사는 두 명의 착한 영혼을 발견한 것을 기뻐하며 셋째 날 다시 그 집을 방문했습니다.

This time, he asked the youngest brother, who like his other siblings offered his share. 

이번에는 막내 동생에게 부탁했고, 막내 동생도 다른 형제들처럼 자신의 몫을 내놓았습니다.

The angel was delighted. Not only had he found three good people in three days, they came from the same family. He decided to reward the brothers for their kind gesture.

천사는 기뻐했습니다. 사흘 만에 세 명의 착한 사람을 찾았을 뿐 아니라, 모두 같은 집안 출신이었기 때문입니다.

그는 형제들의 친절한 행동에 보답하기로 결심했습니다.

The next morning, the angel appeared at their house, this time as a wealthy merchant.

다음날 아침, 천사는 이번에는 부유한 상인의 모습으로 형제의 집에 나타났습니다.

The brothers were amazed at the man standing at their door. The stranger asked them to take a walk through the countryside with him.

형제들은 문 앞에 서 있는 남자를 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.  낯선 남자는 함께 시골을 산책하자고 제안했습니다.

He promised the boys that their fields and pear tree would be well cared for while they were away. 

그리고 그들이 없는 동안 밭과 배나무를 잘 돌봐주겠다고 약속했습니다.

While on their walk, the angel asked the eldest brother to make his best wish.

그 형제들이 산책하는 동안 천사는 맏형에게 가장 큰 소원이 무어냐고 물었습니다.

The young man pointed to the sun-filled meadow and he wished it were a vineyard and that he had a winery and many servants who called him master.

청년은 햇살이 가득한 초원을 가리키며 그곳에 포도밭이 있고 포도주 양조장과 자신을 주인이라 부르는 많은 하인들이 있었으면 좋겠다고 말했습니다.

The angel tapped his staff and vines with grapes filled the valley. As the young man walked toward his new life, the angel called out "Remember God's poor people."

천사가 지팡이를 두드리자 포도가 가득한 포도나무가 골짜기를 가득 채웠습니다.  청년이 새로운 삶을 향해 걸어갈 때 천사는 "하느님의 가난한 백성을 기억하라"고 외쳤습니다.

He then took the two remaining brothers to an open pasture filled with blackbirds.

그리고 남은 두 형제를 찌르레기새가 가득한 열린 목초지로 데려갔습니다.

He asked the middle brother to make a wish. The boy wished that the birds were sheep.

그는 가운데 동생에게 소원을 빌라고 했습니다. 소년은 저 새들이 모두 양이었으면 좋겠다고 소원을 빌었습니다.

He wished he had a mill in the valley and was a wealthy wool merchant with many servants.

그리고 계곡에 방앗간이 있고 많은 하인을 거느린 부유한 양모 상인이 되기를 바랐습니다.

Upon tapping his staff, the middle brother received all that he wished for.

천사가 지팡이를 두드리자 둘째형은 그의 소원을 모두 이루었습니다.

As the middle brother walked toward his new life, the angel called out

"Remember God's poor."

둘째 형이 새로운 삶을 향해 걸어갈 때 천사가 외쳤습니다.

"하느님의 가난한 자를 기억하라.“

The angel then took the last brother to the top of a mountain, filled with valleys, oceans, and forests. He asked the young boy to make his best wish.

천사는 마지막 형제를 계곡과 바다, 숲이 가득한 산 정상으로 데려갔어요. 천사는 소년에게 소원을 말하라고 부탁했습니다.

The young man looked around and then turned to the angel, humbly asking him for someone to love me for who I am.

청년은 주위를 둘러보다가 천사에게 겸손하게 나를 있는 그대로 사랑해 주는 누군가가 있으면 좋겠다고 말했습니다.

The angel, stunned, told the boy that this is a rare wish. The angel had to refer to his book to see what he could do, to which he then answered: "There are only three women in the world who could love you for who you are.

천사는 자신이 어떻게 이 일을 할 수 있는지를 찾기 위해 자신의 책을 참고해야 했는데 그후 소년에게 이렇게 대답했습니다: "당신을 있는 그대로 사랑해 줄 수 있는 여자는 세상에 단 세 명뿐입니다.

Two are married. We'd better hurry to the third."

두 명은 결혼했습니다. 우리는 서둘러 세 번째 여자를 찾아야 합니다.“

The pair then arrived at the court of a king whose daughter was set to be wed shortly. "Your majesty, I have brought a suitor for your daughter," the angel said. 

그 후 두 사람은 곧 결혼할 딸이 있는 왕의 궁전에 도착했습니다. 천사는 "폐하, 폐하의 딸을 위한 구혼자를 데려왔습니다."라고 말했습니다.

The king, stunned, replied: "Another? I have a king, two princes and a sultan in the next room. How can I pick the right man?"

깜짝 놀란 왕이 대답했다: "또 다른 구혼자요? 옆방에 왕과 왕자 두 명, 술탄 한 명이 있습니다. 제가 어떻게 적임자를 고를 수 있겠습니까?“

"Your majesty, I have a solution. In your garden, you have five olive trees. Cut a branch from each one and plant them in a row.

"폐하, 저에게 해결책이 있습니다. 폐하의 정원에는 올리브 나무 다섯 그루가 있습니다. 각각에서 가지를 하나씩 잘라 일렬로 심으세요.

On each branch, tie the name of one suitor. Tomorrow, the branch that bears fruit will also bear the name you seek."

각 가지에 구혼자 한 명의 이름표를 묶어주세요. 내일 열매를 맺는 가지에 폐하께서 찾으시는 이름이 달릴 것입니다.“

The king was happy with this idea.

왕은 이 아이디어에 만족했습니다.

Upon inspecting the branches the next morning, he saw that 4 of the 5 branches were dried and withered, but the branch with the young farmer's name was alive and bore fruit.

다음 날 아침 나뭇가지를 살펴보니 5개 중 4개는 말라서 시들어 있었지만, 젊은 농부의 이름이 적힌 나뭇가지에는 열매가 맺혀 있었습니다.

The farmer rejoiced and the princess and he were married soon after.

농부는 기뻐했고 공주와 그는 얼마 지나지 않아 결혼했습니다.

The angel took them away to a small cottage at the edge of the woods and told them both: "Remember God's poor."

천사는 두 사람을 숲 가장자리에 있는 작은 오두막집으로 데려가서 두 사람에게 말했습니다: "하느님의 가난한 사람들을 기억하시오.“

One year later the angel decided to see how the three brothers were doing.

1년 후 천사는 세 형제가 어떻게 지내는지 보기로 결심했습니다.

Disguising himself as a beggar the angel visited the oldest brother's vineyards. He knocked on the door and said: "Please sir, a taste of wine for a thirsty man."

천사는 거지로 변장하고 큰 형의 포도밭을 방문했습니다.  그는 문을 두드리며 말했습니다: "선생님, 목마른 사람을 위해 포도주 한 잔만 주세요.“

"Away with you, " the brother shouted, "or I'll set my dogs on you if you don't leave at once." 

"물러가지 못해?” 큰형은 소리쳤습니다. ”당장 떠나지 않으면 내 개들을 풀어줄거야"

The angel tapped his staff and all of the man's vineyards disappeared.

천사가 지팡이를 두드리자 그 남자의 포도밭은 모두 사라졌습니다.

"Go back to your pear tree," the angel said. "You forgot God's poor!"

"배나무로 돌아가시오." 천사가 말했습니다. "당신은 하느님의 가난한 사람들을 잊었군요!"

Next, the angel knocked at the wool merchant's mill. "Please sir, a scrap of cloth to warm my cold shoulders."

다음으로 천사는 양모 상인의 방앗간을 두드렸습니다. "선생님, 나의 추운 어깨를 녹일 수 있는 천 조각 하나만 주세요."

"Away with you!" shouted the brother. "I'll set my dogs on you if you don't leave at once."

"물러가지 못해?” 두째형은 소리쳤습니다. ”당장 떠나지 않으면 내 개들을 풀어줄거야“

The angel tapped his staff and all of the man's mill disappeared. "Go back to your pear tree. You forgot God's poor."

천사가 지팡이를 두드리자 남자의 방앗간이 모두 사라졌어요. "배나무로 돌아가시오. 당신은 하느님의 가난한 사람들을 잊었구려."

Finally, the angel walked up the path to the little cottage at the edge of the woods and knocked on the door.

마침내 천사는 숲 가장자리에 있는 작은 오두막집으로 가는 길을 걸어가 문을 두드렸습니다.

"Please sir, do you have some bread for a hungry man?"

The young man replied: "We don't have much, but what we have is yours."

"선생님, 이 배고픈 사람을 위해 빵을 좀 주실 수 있으신가요?“  청년이 대답했습니다: "저희가 가진 것이 많지는 않지만 당신에게 드리겠습니다.“

The young couple offered bread and soup to the old man.

젊은 부부는 노인에게 빵과 수프를 제공했습니다.

They then proceeded to offer him some water, apologizing that they had nothing better to offer him.

그리고는 더 드릴 것이 없어서 미안하다며 물을 권했습니다.

But as they poured a glass for the angel, sweet wine flowed. 

그러나 그들이 천사를 위해 잔을 따르자 달콤한 포도주가 흘러나왔습니다.

The angel took the young couple by the hand and led them to the top of a hill overlooking rows of pear trees and a beautiful house. 

천사는 젊은 부부의 손을 잡고 배나무가 줄지어 서 있고 아름다운 집이 내려다보이는 언덕 꼭대기로 안내했습니다. 

"This is for you and your children," the angel said, "Because you remembered God's poor."
"이것은 당신과 당신의 자녀들을 위한 것입니다." 천사는 말했습니다. "당신이 하느님의 가난한 사람들을 기억했기 때문입니다."라고

Joke-The $15 Porsche

A 16 year old teen comes home with a Porsche. 16세인 한 소년이 포르쉐를 몰고 집으로 돌아왔습니다.

His parents began to yell and scream. “Where did you get that car?”  그의 부모는 고함을 치며 소리를 지르기 시작했습니다. "그 차 어디서 났어?"

He calmly told them, “I bought it today.”  그는 "내가 오늘 샀어요" 라고 조용히  대답했습니다.

“With what money?” Demanded his Father. “I know how much a Porsche costs!”  "무슨 돈으로?" 그의 아버지가 물었습니다. "포르쉐 한대가 얼마인지 내가 아는데!"

“Well,” said the boy, “this one cost me fifteen dollars.”      "하지만," 소년이 말했죠. "이 차는 15달러 주고 샀어요.“

The parents began to yell even louder. “Who would sell a car like this for fifteen dollars!?” They asked.

부모는 더 큰 소리로 외치기 시작했습니다. "누가 이런 차를 15달러에 팔겠어!" 그들은 물었습니다. 

“It was the lady up the street,” said the boy, “don’t know her name — they just moved in.

"길 위쪽에 사는 아주머니였어요."소년은 말했습니다. ”이름은 모르지만 얼마전 이사왔어요.

She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Porsche for fifteen dollars.”

제가 자전거를 타고 지나가는 걸 보더니 포르쉐를 15달러에 살 생각이 없냐고 물어보셨어요.“

“Oh my goodness!” Gasped the mother, “she must be mentally ill! Who knows what she will do next? Paul, you go right up there and see what’s going on. And you my son should be ashamed of taking advantage!”

"오, 세상에!" 어머니는 숨을 헐떡이며 "저 여자는 정신병자인 게 분명해요! 다음에 무슨 짓을 할지 누가 알겠어요? 폴, 지금 바로 거기에 가서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 알아 봐요.  그리고 아들, 너는 부당한 이득을 부끄러워해야 해!"

So the boy’s father walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in her yard calmly planting flowers.

그래서 소년의 아버지는 그 여자가 사는 집으로 가서 마당에서 차분하게 꽃을 심고 있는 그녀를 발견했습니다.

He introduced himself as the father of the boy she sold the Porsche to for fifteen dollars and asked her what happened.  그는 자신을 포르쉐를 15달러에 팔았던 소년의 아버지라고 소개하며 무슨 일이 있었는지 물었습니다.

“Well,” she said, “this morning I got a phone call from my husband. I thought he was on a business trip, but I learned from a friend he has run off to Hawaii with his secretary and really doesn’t intend to come back.

"그래요,“ 그녀는 말했습니다. ”오늘 아침에 남편으로부터 전화를 받았습니다. 그가 출장 중이라고 생각했는데 한 친구로부터 남편이 비서와 함께 하와이로 떠났고 돌아올 생각이 없다는 소식을 들었어요.

He claimed he was really stranded and asked me to sell his new Porsche and send him the money. So I did.”

그는 정말로 오도 가도 못하고 있다며 새 포르쉐를 팔아서 돈을 보내달라고 부탁했습니다. 그래서 그렇게 했죠."

영혼은 육체로부터 독립적인 정신체를 의미한다. 대개 육체에서 벗어나 독자적으로 존재할 수 있다고 여겨지며, 사후에도 존속할 것으로 여겨진다. 사람이 살아있는 동안에는 체내에서 생명과 정신의 원동력이 되어주며, 육체와 정신을 관장하는 인격적인 실체이자 비물질적인 존재이다.
