글씨도 작고, 책에 디테일이 너무 많아서 완독하는 데 힘든 책이었습니다. ^^;
1. General Impression: What was your first feeling after finishing the book? Did you like it or find it difficult to read?
2. The "Single Point of Failure" in Childhood J.D. Vance suggests that having just one stable, loving adult (Mamaw) can save a child from a chaotic environment. Do you agree that a single individual can outweigh the influence of a broken community, or was J.D. an exceptional case?
3. J.D. never gave up on his mother even though she had many problems. Would you do the same if you were in his shoes? For adults, how do we balance the moral duty to help struggling family members with the need to protect our own well-being and future? Where do you draw the line between family loyalty and protecting your own mental health?
4. The book argues that even if jobs return to the Rust Belt, the "culture of domestic chaos" might remain. Do you think social problems are caused more by economic hardship (lack of money/jobs) or by cultural habits (values/lifestyle) passed down through families?
5. Did this book leave you feeling hopeful that people can change their lives, or did it feel more like a sad story about how hard it is to escape your circumstances?
Did this book make you feel more sympathetic toward people who are struggling with addiction or poverty, or did it make you feel frustrated with them? Why?
6. While this is a very American story, did you find any parallels to Korean society? For example, the decline of local cities, the widening gap between the capital and provinces, or the "dirt spoon" (흙수저) discourse?
