1. Watt-Hour Meter Market Trend
□ Digital Meter Market
○ In today's constantly evolving energy market, utilities face the challenge of maximizing the efficiency and quality of the services they provide while at the same time minimizing costs. Advances in automatic meter reading (AMR) technology have helped utilities overcome the problems of collection and analysis of meter data, but AMR is only part of the solution. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) refers to the next generation of meter reading technologies. AMI systems make use of the latest communication technologies, reduce operational costs, and can enable up-to-date business processes by using two-way communication.
○ In this regards, a cooperation protocol was signed in March 2013 between the two Egyptian ministries, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, to develop the performance of IT systems at the electricity sector in Egypt. Signed in March 2013, the protocol resulted in many projects including integrated solutions for networks and security establishment through consultancies and studies to improve the electricity emergency service through the 121 hotline.
○ The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Atef Helmy and the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker have taken part in a workshop organized by the latter for implementing PPP smart meters between Electricity distribution companies and the private sector.
○ This is in addition to cooperating in developing the infrastructure of interior and exterior informatics network for the Ministry of Electricity by linking communication between different sites of the electricity and energy sector in Egypt. Minister Atef Helmy has said that the ICT sector in Egypt has a clear strategy for cooperation with all ministries and government bodies to activate ICT tools use for the shift towards a digital economy. This helps achieve socio-economic development to improve services provided to citizens in different fields, on top of which is the electricity and energy sector. IT solutions are always the answer for overcoming development hurdles, such as smart meters systems, smart networks that contribute to the effectiveness of electricity use, he has said. More unconventional model projects are to be announced which do not burden the State’s budget, adopting partnerships between the Public and Private sectors with the civil society, Minister Atef Helmy has added.
○ Additionally, Minister Mohamed Shaker has explained that the smart meters system aims to help consumers improve the management of energy usage, thus reducing their bills and permitting pre-payment, increasing meters’ reading accuracy and reducing time intervals of readings and bills’ issuing. This is in addition to reducing technical and non-technical waste, lowering demand on energy during peak times by applying different- peak or non-peak time- tariffs, and issuing reports and statistics to help in decision-making.
□ Digital Meters’ Market Size
○ Since digital meters are usually used for residential purposes, then according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), which based on Presidential Decree 2915 for year 1964, it is the official source for provision of data, statistics and reports, the regular buildings for housing connected to electrical networks and meters will be approximately demonstrated below:
(‘000)
○ The previous table illustrates that approximately around 66,970,000 residential electric meters are installed for regular buildings for housing. Concerning the digital meters, digital meter companies such as El Sewedy Electrometer believe that the market size of the digital meters will not be more than 10% (around 6~7 million meters) out of the total installed electric meters. These digital meters are more likely installed in urban governorates such as Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, and Suez (Ain El Sokhna).
○ After examining the local consumption of digital meters, the local production of digital meters is also essential because the local Egyptian company ‘El Sewedy Electrometer’ is considered to be one of the biggest global manufacturers of digital meters. El Sewedy Electrometer has three factories located inside Egypt and seven other factories located in Czech Republic, India, Brazil, Mexico, Ghana, Zambia, and Ethiopia and it has regional offices in Lebanon, Canada, China, and USA.
○ El Sewedy Electrometer is specialized in designing and manufacturing all types of electric meters and developing smart card technology for electric meters. It is also manufacturing a range of electrometers including the automatic meter reading systems, meters multifunction metering systems, and prepayment metering systems. El Sewedy Electrometer is producing more than 2 million meters annually to serve the local market.
□ Procurement of Digital Meter
○ The digital meters are consumed by mainly three parties including the residential, commercial, and industrial buyers. The greatest allocation of digital meter procurement belongs to the commercial and residential segments rather than the industrial segment. The digital meters offered in the Egyptian market include the standard digital meters, advanced payment digital meters, and smart grid digitals meters. All three segments choose to purchase among these three types of digital meters according to their own preferences. The majority of the commercial and residential segments usually purchase the standard digital meters and few of the commercial and residential segments purchase the advanced payment digital meters or even smart grid meters.
○ The recent trend for procurement of digital meters is related to the commercial segment as some of the newly constructed touristic compounds and villages, such as the ones located in Ain El Sokhna, are installing advanced payment digital meters in their facilities. Residents or guests, of these commercial touristic compound and villages, pay money to charge their digital meters and consume their credit or balance.
2. Current Transformers’ Demand Trend
□ Current Transformers’ Demand Place
○ Reference to Eng. Alaa El-Din Sarhan, Managing Director of Mas for Engineering & Trading Co. which supplies 1-phase and 3-phase watt-hour meters, he said that generally the demand of current transformers is not confined to place and mainly the demand is confined to manufacturers of the digital meters not including commercial agents or importers.
○ The local manufacturers, feeding on current transformers, demand them to be assembled in the manufacturing process of the digital meters or even demand them to be considered as spare parts. On the other hand, commercial agents and importers are already dealing with foreign manufacturers of watt-hour meters and usually they tend to import the feeding parts including current transformers from the same foreign manufacturer to ensure the compliance of the installed current transformers.
○ Accordingly, the manufacturer that might demand current transformers will include El Sewedy Electrometer for example. As previously mentioned, El Sewedy Electrometer has three factories located inside Egypt; two of these factories are located in the Industrial Zone of 6th of October City whereas the third factory is located in El Amerya in Alexandria. Since digital meters are more likely installed in urban governorates such as Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, and Suez (Ain El Sokhna), El Sewedy Electrometer was keen to have its factories located in the most urban governorates which act as a ‘hub’ for the other governorates. Consequently, one could say that the demand place of current transformers will be mainly in Cairo firstly and then Alexandria secondly.
□ Current Transformers’ Demanded Quantity
○ Watt-hour meters’ companies said that the current transformers’ demanded quantity can be hardly predicted because the demand varies according to many factors such as the production of digital meters and how many current transformers needed for the production process and the broken down or worn out current transformers that need to be replaced by new current transformers. However, watt-hour meters’ companies said that roughly around more than 500,000 current transformers might be demanded to be served as spare parts or as parts to be assembled for the production process of the watt-hour meters.
○ The demanded quantity is variable because some watt-hour meter companies depend on locally manufactured current transformers while other companies manufacture them in-house such as El Sewedy Electrometer. Therefore, companies interchangeably depend on imported current transformers, local current transformers, and in-house manufactured current transformers.
○ Comparing the given figures of the demanded quantity which watt-hour meters’ companies shared and the quantity shared by the CAPMAS for the given HS code 8504, it was found that current transformers having mutual inductors’ demanded quantity is 465,929 units whereas the demanded quantity of current transformer having other inductors is 551,785 units.
