CANNES, France, May 28 (Yonhap) -- South Koreans Park Chan-wook and Song Kang-ho were named Best Director and Best Actor, respectively, at this year's Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

It is the first time in the country's cinema history that Korean films have taken home two titles at a time at the world's most prestigious film festival.

At the awarding ceremony for the 75th edition of the festival held at Palais Lumiere in Cannes, Park received the prize given to best film director for his romance "Decision to Leave."

It is his third prize given by Cannes, following the Grand Prix, the second-highest prize at the festival, for his thriller "Oldboy" in 2003 and the Jury Prize, the No. 3 honor, for the horror "Thirst" in 2009.

And Park became the second South Korean director to win in the category, following renowned filmmaker Im Kwon-taek for the historical drama "Chihwaseon" in 2002.

In his acceptance speech, Park praised the global film industry for overcoming the yearslong COVID-19 pandemic.

"Fans didn't visit movie theaters, but it was the time that we were aware of the value of cinema," he said. "As we have hope and power to overcome this pandemic, I believe that we cineaste will keep theaters and cinema for good."

And he did not forget to thank his main actors -- Park Hae-il and Tang Wei -- saying "Most of all, my love to Park and Tang is beyond expression‎."

Starring Chinese actress Tang of "Lust, Caution" (2007) and Korean actor Park of "Memories of Murder" (2003), "Decision to Leave" is about a detective who suspects a mysterious widow in a murder case and later becomes interested in her.

Song took home the best actor prize for his role of a baby broker in the film written and directed by the Cannes-winning Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda.

It is the first title that he earned from Cannes, although he has starred in several Cannes-winning titles, including Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" (2019) and Park Chan-wook's "Thirst" (2009). He served as a jury member at last year's Cannes.

He also became the first South Korean male actor winning an acting prize at Cannes. Jeon Do-yeon was awarded Best Actress for her role in the drama "Secret Sunshine" in 2007, in which Song also starred.

"I'm so grateful and honored. I would like to thank director Kore-eda, who is a great artist," Song said on the stage. "I also want to share this gratitude and honor with our cast members of Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Bae Doo-na and Lee Joo-young."

"Broker," Kore-eda's first Korean-language project, depicts the relationships of characters formed through a baby box, where people anonymously drop off newborns that they can't raise.

Song plays Sang-hyun, who steals an unattended infant left by its parents at a baby box and sells it to parents who need babies.

Director Park said he and Song received the titles as they attended the Cannes festival with different films. The festival does not grant Best Director and Best Actor prizes to one piece.

"If I and Song came to Cannes with one film, one of us would have missed a prize," he told Korean reporters after the closing ceremony. "As we came here separately, we took separate trophies at the same time."

He also celebrated Song's first acting title at Cannes after decades of a silver screen career since his debut film "The Day a Pig Fell into the Well" (1996). The two worked together in films like "Thirst," "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002) and "Joint Security Area" (2000).

"I couldn't help running to him," said Park, who rushed to Song and hugged him after his name was announced for the winner of best male actor. "He has appeared in many good films, and it is time for him to win the prize."

He asked Song to give him a chance to do a new project together.

Song, who became the third Asian male actor to win an acting prize at Cannes after Hong Kong's Leung Chiu Wai for "In The Mood for Love" in 2000 and Japan's Yuya Yagira for "Nobody Knows" in 2004, thanked the director for his enthusiastic celebration.

"I'm so moved as an actor who has worked with director Park and joined hands with him in winning a prize with 'Thirst,'" he said. "I'll not forget the moment when he ran to me and embraced me."

He said he has not acted in order to win a title but made constant efforts to do good films, which have helped him attend international film festivals and receive a prize.

Meanwhile, the top honor of Palme d'Or went to "Triangle of Sadness" directed by Ruben Ostlund, and the Grand Prix was shared by "Close" by Lukas Dhont and "Stars At Noon" by Claire Denis.

Best Screenplay was awarded to Tarik Saleh who wrote and directed "Boy from Heaven," while Zar Amir Ebrahimi won the Best Actress prize.

Jerzy Skolimowski's "EO" and Felix Van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch's "The Eight Mountains" tied for the Jury Prize.

배우 송강호와 박찬욱 감독이 프랑스 칸 영화제에서 트로피를 거머쥐었다.

28일(현지시간) 프랑스 칸 뤼미에르 대극장에서 제75회 칸영화제 시상식에서 송강호는 남우주연상, 박찬욱 감독은 감독상을 수상했다.

송강호 주연의 '브로커'는 지난 26일 뤼미에르 극장에서 공식 상영된 뒤 12분의 기립박수가 터져 나왔다. 이에 송강호는 남우주연상 후보로 급부상했다.

송강호는 시상식에서 자신의 이름이 호명되자 강동원, 고레에다 히로카즈 감독과 포옹한 뒤 무대에 올랐고, 불어로 "메르시 보쿠(감사합니다)"라고 인사했다.

그는 이어 "너무 감사하고 영광스럽다. 위대한 예술가 고레에다 감독에게 깊은 감사를 드린다"며 "아내에게 큰 선물이 된 것 같다. 이 트로피의 영광을, 영원한 사랑을 바친다"고 말했다.

한국 남자 배우가 이 부문 상을 받은 것은 처음이다. 연기상 수상은 '밀양'으로 여우주연상을 수상한 전도연에 이어 두 번째다. 송강호는 칸에 일곱 번째 방문한 결과 뜻깊은 수상을 얻게 됐다.

박찬욱 감독은 영화 '헤어질 결심'으로 감독상을 받았다. 한국 감독으로는 2002년 '취화선' 임권택 감독에 이어 두 번재 감독상이다.

박찬욱 감독은 "코로나19를 겪으면서 온 인류가 국경을 높이 올릴 때도 있었지만 단일한 공포와 근심을 공유하기도 했다"며 "영화도 극장에 손님이 끓어지는 시기가 있었지만 그만큼 극장이라는 곳이 얼마나 소중한 것인지 우리 모두 깨닫는 계기가 됐다"고 말했다.

이어 "우리가 이 질병을 이겨낼 희망과 힘을 가진 것처럼 우리 영화도 우리 영화인들도 영화관을 지키면서 영화를 영원히 지켜내려 한다"며 "무엇보다 박해일 그리고 탕웨이, 두 사람에게 보내는 저의 사랑은 뭐라 말로 더이상 자세한 설명은 생략하겠다"고 배우들에게 감사 인사를 전했다.

박찬욱 감독이 칸영화제 경쟁부문에 진출한 것은 이번이 네 번째. 박 감독은 '올드보이'로 심사위원대상을, '박쥐'로 심사위원상을 수상한 바 있다.

'헤어질 결심'은 박찬욱 감독이 '아가씨' 이후 6년 만에 선보인 장편 한국 영화로, 변사사건을 수사하게 된 형사 해준(박해일 분)이 사망자의 아내 서래(탕웨이 분)에게 의심과 관심을 동시에 느끼며 벌어지는 이야기를 그린 멜로 스릴러다.

[재미로 읽는 영한대역 세계 명작 칼라 만화]

폭풍의 언덕 Wuthering Heights / 에밀리 브론테(Emily Bronte)

(1) 《폭풍의 언덕》(Wuthering Heights)은 영국의 작가 에밀리 브론테가 필명 엘리스 벨(Ellis Bell)로 출간한 유일한 소설이자 유작 소설이다. 아버지 패트릭 브론테 신부가 성공회 사제였던 가정환경상 에밀리는 어린시절을 사제관이 있던 영국 요크셔의 황량한 벌판에서 보내면서 작가로서의 상상력을 길렀으며, 어른이 된 후 요크셔 벌판의 폐가(TopWithens)에서 영감을 얻어 《폭풍의 언덕》을 썼다. 캐서린(Catherine Earnshaw)과 히스클리프(Heathcliff)와의 불멸의 사랑을 우울하면서도 아름답게 묘사한 작품으로 등장인물들의 심리묘사가 뛰어난 게 장점이다. 출간당시에는 비윤리적이라는 비난을 받았지만, 20세기에 토머스 몸 등에 의해 재평가되었다. 한국어판은 범우사 등의 문학전문출판사들에 의해서 역간되었다.

(2) 폭풍의 언덕 Wuthering Heights 줄거리

1801년 황량한 벌판에 위치한 폭풍의 언덕에 세입자인 락우드씨가 찾아온다. 자신이 세든 집인 드러시크로스 저택의 주인인 히드클리프를 만나기 위해서였다. 하지만 사람들이 모두 거칠었고 잘 곳도 변변하지 못하여 감기에 걸려서 돌아온다. 집에 돌아온 락우드는 폭풍의 언덕과 드러시크로스 저택의 역사를 잘 알고 있는 가정부 넬리 딘에게 그동안 있었던 두 집안의 역사에 대해서 듣는다.

이야기 1

폭풍의 언덕의 주인이었던 언쇼는 리버풀에 갔다가 거지꼴을 한 소년을 데려온다. 가족들은 출신을 알 수 없는 소년에게 경계심을 갖고있었는데, 특히 아들 힌들리는 히스클리프를 미워한다. 죽은 아들의 이름까지 지어줄 정도로 히스클리프를 편애하는 아버지에 대한 불만때문이었다. 아버지가 죽은 후, 아내 프랜시스를 데리고 집에 돌아온 힌들리는 결국 히드클리프를 머슴처럼 가혹하게 학대한다. 게다가 어린시절부터 같이 자랐던 친구이자 애인인 캐서린까지 드러시크로스 저택의 아들인 에드거에게 사랑을 품자, 이에 상심한 히드클리프는 가출한다.

이야기 2

몇 년후 부자가 되어서 돌아온 히드클리프는 몸이 약했던 아내 프랜시스의 죽음이후 폐인이 된 힌들리를 도박으로 빈털털이로 만들어버린다. 알코올 중독으로 힌들리가 죽자, 그는 힌들리의 아들인 헤어턴에게 자신이 당한대로 앙갚음을 하여, 무식한 머슴으로 키운다. 새끼 뻐꾸기가 다른 새의 알들을 내치는 것처럼, 폭풍의 언덕의 주인이 머슴이 된 것이다. 그리고 자신의 애인을 뺏어간 에드거의 여동생 이사벨라를 유혹해서 결혼한 뒤, 인권을 짓밟는다. 히드클리프와의 만남이후 결혼전부터 갖고 있던 정신착란이 심해져서 죽은 캐서린만 찾는 무관심과 학대를 견디지 못한 이사벨라는 런던으로 달아나서 아들을 낳는다. 한편 에드거는 죽은 아내가 남긴 외동딸 캐시를 곱게 키운다.

이야기 3

여동생이 병으로 죽자 에드거는 런던에 가서 조카를 몰래 데려오지만 12살의 철없는 꼬마 캐시의 말실수로 발각된다. 히드클리프가 아들을 데려갈 것이 분명하자, 에드거는 마지못해서 조카를 폭풍의 언덕에 데려다 준다. 까다롭고 버릇없는데다가 허약하기까지 한 아들이 마음에 들리 없었지만, 히드클리프는 아들을 캐서린과 결혼시켜서 드러시크로스를 먹어치울 생각을 한다. 결국 히드클리프는 아들을 캐시와 강제로 결혼시켜, 탐욕을 채운다. 딘은 셋방을 구해서 어릴적부터 모셔온 캐시 아가씨를 다시 모시고 싶어하지만 그건 부질없는 생각이었다.

이야기 4

1802년 친구의 초대를 받아서 가던 락우드는 폭풍의 언덕에 다시 온다. 전세 문제를 이야기하기 위해서였는데, 딘 아주머니는 히드클리프가 죽었다고 했다. 비가 몰아치는 날, 눈도 못 감고 죽었다는 것이다. 하지만, 헤어턴과 캐시 사이에서 사랑의 감정이 싹트고 결혼을 앞두면서, 폭풍의 집과 드러시크로스저택의 불행한 역사는 끝나고 새로운 역사가 시작된다.
