49)4/6 Itinerary: Carcassonne - A city with an impregnable fortress -

     After experiencing the Canal du Midi, we arrived in Carcassonne, a quintessential medieval fortress city, around noon. The new town on the outskirts of Carcassonne is home to factories, large supermarkets, and large restaurant chains like McDonald's and KFC, creating a city where modernity and medievalism coexist.

I decided to have lunch at McDonald's today. During my long trips, I've tried to eat local food whenever possible, and sometimes, when my appetite was lacking, I'd eat Chinese food, but I've never really been craving burgers or chicken. But today, seeing a McDonald's, everyone's craving burgers and chicken is on the rise. For the first time in a while, I enjoyed a burger, fries, and a Coke.

   The city of Carcassonne is comprised of two villages: Ville Basse, the lower town, and La Cite, surrounded by the citadel, along the Aude River. It's said that when the clock strikes 10 p.m., the walls of Carcassonne are illuminated, revealing their beauty. In reality, I should have spent a night in Carcassonne to admire the beautifully illuminated walls at night, but my itinerary limited me to a brief daytime visit. 

The fortified double walls are said to be the largest of their kind in Europe and were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Carcassonne originally bordered Spain, which is why it was built with such fortifications. With the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, the border with Spain was moved westward, ending its role as a fortress and leading to its gradual decline.

In the 19th century, the castle fell into ruin, but the writer Mérimée discovered it and restored it by Vioré Le Dique, transforming it into a magnificent castle. Today, it is one of France's most popular tourist destinations. It stretches approximately 3 kilometers and boasts 52 towers

49)4월6일(금) 여정: 까르까송(Carcassonne)-유럽 최대 난공불락의 성채를 지닌 도시-




Midi운하 체험을 하고 중세 요세 도시의 전형인 Carcassonne에는 12시 경 도착했다.
까를까송 외곽 신도시는 공장은 물론 대형 마트와 멕도날도, KFC등 대형 외식 Chain정들이 있어 현대와 중세가 어울린 도시같다.
오늘 점심은 멕도날도에서 하기로 했다. 오랜 여행 중 가급적이면 그 지방의 전통 음식을 먹기로 하고 때로는 입맛이 떨어 지면 중국 음식을 들었으나 햄버거나 치킨은 별로 먹고 싶지는 아니했었다. 그런데 오늘은 McDonald점을 보니 모두가 햄버거와 치킨이 먹고 싶어진다. 오랜만에 햄버거와 프라이 그리고 Coke를 맛있게 먹었다.
까르까손 시는 시내를 흐르는 오드(Aude)강을 끼고 아랫 마을 빌 바스(Ville Basse)와 성채에 둘러 쌓인 '라 시태(La Cite)' 두 마을이다.
시곗바늘이 밤 10시를 가리키면 까르까송의 성벽은 조명을 받으며 환하게 드러난다고 한다.
사실 까르까송은 하룻 밤 자면서 조명을 받는 아름다운 밤의 성벽을 봐야 할터인데 일정상 낮에 잠시 들려 보는 것이 유감스러웠다.
이중으로 된 견고한 성벽은 유럽에사 현존하는 것 중 가장 큰 것이라 하며, 1997년에 유네스코 세계 유산에도 등록되었다.
원래 까르까송은 스페인 접경 지역에 있었다. 그래서 견고하고 성을 쌓았다고 한다. 1659년 피레네 조약에 의해 스페인 과의 국경이 서쪽으로 멀어짐에 따라 요세로서의 역할이 끝나 점점 쇠퇴하였다.
19세기는 이 성이 폐허가 되었으나 작가 메리메가 이 성을 발견하여 비오레 르디크가 복원하여 훌륭한 성의 모습으로 다시 태어 났다. 현재는 프랑스에서 손꼽히는 관광지가 되었다. 전체 길이가 약 3Km, 52개의 탑이 있다.

Because he didn't speak English well, Jeonggong spoke in Korean using gestures, and the young Frenchman responded with tact. Jeonggong said, "Gestures are universal."
영어가 잘 통하지 않아 정공은 몸짓하며 우리 말로 말하고 젊은 프랑스 청년은 눈치껏 응대하다.
