10. Tian Ze Lu (Heaven over Lake / Hexagram 10 :Treading). Lu......3.
▣ Initial Nine(First Line) : Plain/ Simple Treading. Going forward brings no blame/fault.
[Explanation]
[Initial Nine] indicates that if one acts plainly and sincerely with a simple,
unpertentious mind as always, there will be no fault or blame.
[Commentary]
As a beginner taking their very first steps into the world,
if one proceeds by ppracticing with a pure and simple mind [素履,소리 - So-ri]
as one goes forward [往,왕 - Wang], one will encounter no fault or blame [无咎,무구 - Mu-gu].
One must move forward solely with the pure intention of practicing the Way[道,도 - Dao].
If one maintains a mind as pure and unblemished as a bride and groom on their wedding night,
no regardless of the world one faces.
However, if one takes a wrong first step, one enters a world where a tiger waits with open jaws,
raising concern that one's sole life may be endangered.
When the Initial Nine[初九,초구] line moves, the Lu Hexagram[履卦,이괘] transforms into the
Tian Shui Song Hexagram(天水訟卦,천수송괘 - Hexagram 6 : Conflict).
Looking at Confucius's commentary, "Proceeding with plain treading means moving forward
alone to fulfill one's own will
it reveals that the initial beginner's mind is itself true enlightenment (正覺,정각 - Jeong-gak).
This emphasizes that a beginner should not mingle with sestablished figures
and unconsciously become tainted by corruption and wrongdoing,
but rather firmly practice according to their own convictions.
Line 4, which could guidee me, does not respond,
and even the sole Yin line at line 3 is not a connection destined to be mine,
so simply needs to forge ahead steadfastly like a rhinoceros horn,
with a firm attitude of taking full responsibility for all of one's own problems.
Cheng Yi's commentary was as follows :
"The initial position(初位,초위 -Cho-wi) is an extremely low rank.
If a person cannot be at peace with their humble and poor standing,
they will covet the world and act with impatience.
Such actions merely attempt to escape poverty and low status,
and even if they happen to attain it by chance, they will undoubtedly overflow with arrogance."
So (素,소) represents simplicity, a white and calm ordinary mind,
the unpolluted innate heavenly nature
and the very position of resting in supreme goodness
As for examples of So-ri (素履,소리 - Plain Treading), the funeral oration by Baeksa Yi Hang-bok,
the Ridgepole Ceremony text of Hoeheon Seowon, and beautiful words and conduct
of scholars who maintained their proper duties are cited.
Historical examples also include Admiral Yi Sun-sin's serving in war as commoner
(Baegui Jonggun) and the principled conduct of Boyi and Shuqi.
