Common Panel Prompts and Operational Guidance for Refrigerators
Portable Refrigerators come equipped with user-friendly panels that display error codes to indicate specific problems or malfunctions.
Understanding these error codes and following proper troubleshooting steps can help you resolve issues without unnecessary panic or confusion.
Understanding Error Codes
Refrigerator error codes are alphanumeric indicators designed to assist users in identifying specific problems.
Let's explore some common error codes and their corresponding solutions.
Displaying "F1"
If your 12v refrigerator's panel displays "F1," it typically indicates insufficient or unstable voltage/current. Here are the possible scenarios where "F1" may appear and the appropriate actions to take:
Q1: In the following four situations, "F1" is displayed:
Fluctuating battery level indicator: Rapid fluctuations in the battery level indicator suggest unstable voltage. To address this, try replacing the power cord.
Household power supply: If "F1" appears when using a household power supply, it may indicate a faulty power supply. Switch to a car power supply for testing purposes.
If the refrigerator operates normally, consider replacing the household power supply.
Car startup: When "F1" appears after turning off the car, it is a normal phenomenon. The "F1" code is displayed to protect the car battery. If the refrigerator continues operating normally after the car is turned off, it may affect the car battery. Ensure to monitor the battery's condition.
Low voltage protection during car startup: If "F1" appears when the car is started, it indicates low voltage protection. To protect the battery, adjust the gear. Press and hold the settings button for 3 seconds until the panel gear flashes. Then, use the settings button to switch from "H" (high gear) to "M" (medium) or "L" (low).
Portable fridge: Only works when van is turned on. How to fix 'F1' error?
Question
Our van has a second battery. So as long as the fridge is plugged into our van then it remains cold regardless if our van is turned on or not.
Recently, the fridge only works when the van is turned on. Otherwise if the van is turned off there is this error msg 'F1'.
What's the matter and how to fix?
UPDATE:
Now, my fridge is working even when the van is turned off - after I played with the 'Gear' and arrow buttons.
Now it's set to 'ECO' and 'L'. I set the 'L' temperature at 3.
I don't know what the 'L' 'M" and 'H' (1 in the photo) refer to and what it does. I assume 'ECO' uses less voltage which is perhaps good if my van's house battery is low. As there is a 'MAX" option (2 in the photo)
In summary, I don't know exactly what I did to make the fridge work again.
this gives a bit of info on that error.
Sounds like when the engine is running the alternator is providing power (likely charging the second battery via a VSR or DC-DC charger) and the electrical system is running at a healthy 13+ volts.
However when the engine/alternator turn off the fridge is running on just the second battery alone. The error message suggests that the fridge is not gettiing enough power.
Is the pic on the left with the engine off? Does it say 11.0v on the fridge display? This means that the fridge is not getting enough power from the second battery.
Here are the troubleshooting steps to go further:
Measure the voltage on the terminals of the second battery.
Measure the voltage on the end of the cable that goes to the fridge.
Maybe try replacing the fuse (if there is one) on the wire between the second battery and the fridge.
Check the cable between the fridge and second battery for any damage.
Likely there may be an issue with the second battery or you could be experiencing "voltage drop". If you measure the voltage on the terminals of the second battery and it shows something like 12.4+ volts then you can try replace the wiring between the fridge and second battery.
good luck. At least a voltage issue is cheaper than a new fridge or compressor problem.
