고린도후서 8:1-8 형제들아 하나님께서 마게도냐 교회들에게 주신 은혜를 우리가 너희에게 알게 하노니 환난의 많은 시련 가운데서 저희 넘치는 기쁨과 극한 가난이 저희로 풍성한 연보를 넘치도록 하게 하였느니라 내가 증거하노니 저희가 힘대로 할 뿐아니라 힘에 지나도록 자원하여 이 은혜와 성도 섬기는 일에 참여함에 대하여 우리에게 간절히 구하니 우리의 바라던 것뿐 아니라 저희가 먼저 자신을 주께 드리고 또 하나님 뜻을 좇아 우리에게 주었도다

마게도냐 교인들은 극심한 환난과 생계를 유지하기 어려운 극한 가난 속에 있었습니다. 세상의 논리로 본다면 도움을 받아야 마땅하지만, 그들은 깊은 궁핍 속에서도 오히려 ‘넘치는 기쁨’으로 ‘풍성한 연보’를 드리는 역설을 보여주었습니다. 이는 헌금의 크기가 통장 잔액이 아니라, 하나님께 받은 은혜를 체감하는 깊이에 비례한다는 사실을 증명합니다.

그들이 드린 헌금은 단순한 동정이 아니라, 영혼을 살리는 복음 전파와 바울의 선교 사역을 돕기 위한 필사적인 헌신이었습니다. 그들은 자신들의 한계를 완전히 넘어설 정도로, 힘에 지나도록 물질을 내어놓았습니다. 이는 하나님 나라의 확장이 자신들의 안위보다 훨씬 더 가치 있음을 고백한 사건이었습니다.

마게도냐 교인들이 이처럼 파격적인 헌신을 할 수 있었던 이유는 바울의 체면을 세우기 위해서도 아니었고, 바울의 강요 때문도 아니었습니다. 그들은 오직 영혼 구원을 향한 하나님의 선하신 뜻을 바라보았습니다. 인간적인 손익을 따지지 않고 하나님의 뜻을 최우선으로 두었기에, 기쁨이 가득한 순종을 드릴 수 있었습니다.

그리스도인의 모든 헌신은 억지나 의무감이 아니라, 은혜에 대한 감사와 자원하는 마음에서 나와야 합니다. 주님께서 우리를 구원하시기 위해 생명을 희생하신 것이 바로 그 사랑입니다. 주님은 이와 같이 우리도 구원의 감격에 겨워 자원하여 서로를 위해 희생하고 사랑하기를 원하십니다.

십자가의 은혜로 구원받은 성도들은 그 은혜를 자신에게만 가두어 두어서는 안 됩니다. 주님의 은혜에 보답하는 길은 어둠 속에 있는 영혼들을 위해 우리도 힘을 다해 헌신하는 것입니다. 마게도냐 교인들처럼 우리도 영혼들의 구원과 회복을 위해 사랑과 물질을 아낌없이 쏟아부어야 합니다.

2 Corinthians 8:1-8

We want to make known to you, brothers, the grace that God gave to the churches of Macedonia, how their overflowing joy and extreme poverty in the midst of the many trials of their tribulation caused them to overflow with abundant donations. For I testify that they did not only according to their ability, but also volunteered beyond their means, earnestly asking us for this grace and participation in the ministry of the saints. I gave it to you

The Macedonian believers were in extreme tribulation and extreme poverty, making it difficult to make a living. According to the logic of the world, they deserve help, but they showed the paradox of giving ‘abundant donations’ with ‘overflowing joy’ even in deep poverty. This proves that the size of the offering is not proportional to the balance in the bank account, but to the depth of experiencing the grace received from God.

The offering they gave was not simply sympathy, but a desperate dedication to spread the soul-saving gospel and help Paul's missionary work. They gave away material beyond their power, to the point where they completely exceeded their limits. This was an incident where they confessed that the expansion of God's kingdom was much more valuable than their own comfort.

The reason the Macedonian believers were able to make such an unconventional dedication was not to save Paul's face, nor because he forced them to do so. They only looked to God's good will for the salvation of souls. Because I put God's will first without considering human profit or loss, I was able to give obedience filled with joy.

All Christian devotion should not come from force or a sense of obligation, but from gratitude for grace and a willing heart. It is that love that caused the Lord to sacrifice his life to save us. In the same way, the Lord wants us to be filled with the thrill of salvation and volunteer to sacrifice and love one another.

Saints who have been saved by the grace of the cross should not confine that grace to themselves. The way to repay the Lord's grace is to devote ourselves with all our might to the souls in darkness. Like the Macedonian believers, we must also pour out love and material generously for the salvation and recovery of souls.
