1. Unlike other Sherlock Holmes stories, why does the client die in The Adventure of the Dancing Men?
2. Is Elsie a victim or a perpetrator? Elsie concealed her past and put her husband in danger, yet she was also someone trying to escape that very past. Do you think her silence was an act of self-protection, irresponsibility, or a choice made to protect the person she loved?
3. Was Slaney's love genuine? Slaney followed Elsie all the way to England to win her back. Was this true love taken to the point of obsession, or was it nothing more than possessiveness and a desire for control?
4. What is the true cause of the tragedy in this story? Cubitt's death was the result of multiple forces converging — Slaney's obsession, Elsie's silence, Holmes's delayed response, and the time it took to crack the cipher. If you had to name a single cause, what would it be, and where do you think the tragedy could have been prevented?
5. What letter does the following symbol represent?
As Jodi mentioned at the end, we read this as a kind of a love triangle not a detective story. But this seemed to only encourage all participants to express their ideas more openly and aggressively. :) For #3, most think Slaney's love is not genuine but an obsession even close to a stalking. For #4, Aoi thinks Elsie's silence (not sharing her past) is the main cause. More dominant opinion is Mr. Slaney's quest for Elsie. Minority opinions includes Mr. Cubitt's incompetency in handling a firearm (and his failure to maintain the gun properly). Thanks Sylvi for siding with me in a few points!
