6. 마지막 문장인 “There is a land of the living and a land of dead, and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.”
For #4, Sylvi said if she would save Jaime, Camila’s son, since he’s lived such a short live and Marquesa the least since she is rich life and the eldest. For #5, the symbolic meaning of the bridge which falls apart early in the story, all agreed that its principal meaning includes the precariousness of life (Livi), fragileness of life (Sylvi), and life’s unpredictability (Kate).
Once we stumbled into a short discussion on religion and Livi’s religious practice. We could say that if you have God in your heart, it makes you a Catholic.
We discussed also about the ending (#6). Both Sylvi and Livi don’t like it since it was like all-you-need-is-love type of a banal ending if I may put it. I like it though; it nicely summarizes the main theme of the story: love has a spectrum of many forms, yet the bondage even with the dead makes us human.
We didn't have a chance to talk about Wilder’s writing style. I think it's in sync with the overall tone of the story, which bears satirical and near-fable traits. The choice of words, interwoven with sudden twists or exaggerated descriptions, brings unexpected impressions—ludicrous under serious events and vice versa. He won his first Pulitzer with this novel and the second with a play. He wrote many plays later, and some dialogues in this novel (his second novel in his early career) certainly foretells his master craftmanship/success in the future plays.
